***DUKE VS NORTH CAROLINA OFFICIAL GAMEDAY THREAD***

The start of each half really hurt us as always....down double digits both halves. When we get back level or ahead we are plagued by turnovers and poor choices on the offensive end. I havent seen a stretch this year, outside of Clemson, where we put up a 8-10 pt run when we have come back from a deficit. This one hurt - we didnt get to the line, we had crucial TO's and somehow we let Love score 25 on us. Seems at least one guard every game gets 20+ on us. We competed but the flaws in the team are there to see and cant be fixed this year I dont think. A true PG is needed - its a huge hole this year

calm down, man. I said our lack of height on the perimeter (Goldwire, Steward and Roach).
I’m calm but they aren’t on the perimeter they are on the pg and Sg. Duke has height on the perimeter but went with Roach (pg), Steward ( combo guard ) and Goldwire ( pg) . Roy knew this duke didn’t adjust outside of Moore. Duke had Johnson who imo is a 3-d player, Baker and Moore. Roy out coached K . Plain and simple.

Our effort was certainly better tonight. But our execution? It just leaves a lot to be desired. We’re talented, IMO....but the collective bball IQ for this team is low.

Carolina isn’t very good either....just made a few more shots tonight. They take care of the ball similar to us.

Will Duke even get an invite to the NIT? I mean they are what 7-7 and looking like atleast two more losses this season .

Recap and observations from a highly disappointing performance.

At least there was Henry Coleman.

As predicted, K's presser was insufferable. They played hard enough to win...blah blah blah.

He did say they may not reach others expectations this season so there is that.

K seemed as clueless as us as to why Wendell never shot. He seems to think Wendell never intended to shoot assuming he'd get fouled on the way.

Sharpe and Platek didn't play a lot in the last 14 minutes, but they should have been fouled on every possession. UNC was scoring about 1.2 points per possession. Sharpe is only making about 30% of his FTs, and Platek is scared to shoot in a tight game

Smh. What more can be said? Looking forward to next year. Paolo and Griffin will give us Zion and RJ type vibes. It'll be fun to watch. It's hard to watch this year. Bad coaching and bad player performances.

Did Duke play any zone? Not that I recall. I always like to play a little zone to see how the opponent reacts. And no teams seem to use a box and one any more, but Love was UNC's only effective ball handler. I think that alternating Goldwire and Roach on Love, and letting the other four play zone would have worked

Hurt should play more inside on offense, and float to the 3 point line. He posted up Brooks once on the left block very nicely. Hurt had one nice drive down the left baseline. But mostly he stood in the corner with Brooks guarding him too closely to get off a shot

Both teams played well. For UNC, Sharpe, Walton and Black were all perfect from the floor. A combined 13 out of 13 including 5 three pointers. Caleb Love scored 25 including 4 of 5 from three. There were some defensive lapses, but UNC shot the ball as well as they possibly can. And Duke has to get to the free throw line more. Only 4 out of 7 tonight

Yeah it’s kinda hard to beat teams when our best player fouls out with only seven points.

I will say this: with that above statement, WE STILL HAD A CHANCE TO WIN! How rare is that? The effort and fight is there. Cutting down on the turnovers would also help. UNC could’ve blown our doors off, but the guys fought all night.

Our lack of height and length on the perimeter will allow bad shooting teams a career night against us. And despite all of that, we still almost won a game we had no business being in at the end.
Every loss except Illinois, we basically had a shot...#tough

Williams, Coleman and Brakefield all contributed. I thought that Duke would go small, but the freshmen bigs were up to the task. A strong finish is certainly possible. Only the Virginia game looks like a long shot. A 7-2 or 8-3 finish before Selection Sunday is realistic

Think you mean 8-2 or 7-3. Which would be realistic but this team, just doesn't understand winning. We can get close and keep it close with most teams but finishing the job is a skill no one here has. I'll be super optimistic and say we finish 6-4 at 13-11.

I meant 7-2 or 8-3. Those are the records that I think would be needed to have a reasonable tournament resume. I know that it adds up to nine and eleven games. I was guessing for ACC tournament games played, if there is a tournament and a possible covid cancellation

ged you're a really good guy and friend. I meant to congratulate you last nite on how well UNC played. I thought both teams left it all on the court, and its the way a rivalry game should be played. It was a physical, yet VERY CLEAN game too. If UNC gets those kinds of contributions on a CONSISTENT BASIS from their guards, they are going to be a tough out for anyone!!

Thank you for your very optimistic viewpoint on our ability to end the season strong. Unfortunately I just do not think it is in the cards. Even when we play well enough to win the game late (like last nite), we just don't seem to have the one CLOSER on our team who wants the ball and REFUSES to let the team lose.

Its kind of a parallel with the UNC of LAST SEASON. Duke can play so competitively and closely, but just can't grab the brass ring at the end. I think a 6-4 is possible, but obviously that leaves us woefully short of the dance. Good luck rest of way! OFC

They'd get one on name alone if they qualify. No sense in talking about it since we
know we'd decline.

I suspect we would decline due to Covid. If its offered I do think it should at least be considered. Extra games in a tournament situation would seemingly benefit our returnees for next year. JMO

First game I’ve watched from tip to buzzer this year. It’s just hard to get into watching games (even Duke/UNC) during COVID times with no fans. You can say what you want to, but it’s like watching scrimmage games. I’m out until this political bs is through. Take care everyone.

Duke has got to learn to feed off one another . When Hurt and Johnson are in the game they have no chemistry and when Roach and Steward play together it seems their confidence drops.
Need to play Coleman and Williams at the five from here on out that’s a good rotation and go to a two guard line up with Johnson at the wf spot as a third ball handler and Hurt at the four . This will allow for more movement with in the offense and spread the court . And can we please attack the basket more.

wish we opted out

Never seen K play a box and one. Jimmy V would do that in a heartbeat and then switch to triangle and 2. Was it McCollum w VCU that destroyed Duke in NCAAs about 10-12 years ago? Box and 1 would have won that game.

What do you expect him to do?
Be honest that they didn't play well. Turnovers were bad. Basketball IQ was bad. Only got to the FT line a few times and still didn't shoot them well. Didn't guard perimiter well. They won't get better being coddled that they were deserving to win. They weren't.

He held the team accountable after the loss against Miami. Called them, "soft". They definitely competed last night, (something they did not do on Monday night), just came up short.

Really interesting article with Coach K on 247.....not sure if it sheds any light on the exact date of end of his career but he open talks about it being relatively soon. What say you guys?

Saw that. I think he coaches until his grandson graduates and I could see him bowing out around then. Of course, I would love to have him around for longer than that, but I think he is eyeing it whether he's admitting that publicly or not. Human nature is a hell of a thing.
