duke football news

I do not know of a QB in the NFL right now who doesn't have some mobility. Even the older guys like Aaron Rodgers can move around in the pocket when necessary. I don't know what Maalik gains by being openly opposed to running. As has been said before, there's a reason he's at Duke and Riley is starting at Notre Dame.
I don't think you will see either one in the NFL.

Duke has to figure out something during the bye. The oc is awful
Time to move on from Murphy. He cannot run and avoid the rush. He throws the ball too hard. He does not, or cannot, read the defenses he faces. Throws to closely covered receivers. And he makes Duke way too easy to defend against. I have to admit that Hart was absolutely correct months ago when he stated that we whould be relying upon Loftis and/or Belin.

I think there really trying to redshirt loftis so I don’t think he’ll be an option but belin ABSOLUTELY deserves a shot. As for brewer his offense has no flow or tempo. Its like watching an 6 year old play madden

I have always liked Belin over Loftis but I have been disappointed we have not let one play. I am really struggling with 2 of the coaches. The OC is very meh so far and the special teams coach has shown he had no experience. We need a spark on the offense. Murphy is just to rigid in the pocket but on another board one of the regular commentators was saying that he sat next to Belins parents at a recent game and they said he is still recovering from his injury from last year. I don't know for sure but man a QB with mobility would be a nice change right now.

I really like Diaz and he's a smart guy whereas we are only fans, even Surf who clearly knows more than I do. But I have trouble figuring out why Manny won't give Belin or if he is hurt, Loftis more of a chance. Do they see a lot in Murphy in practice than we see in games? Do they feel he has such arm talent that it will eventually pay dividends? I can't believe they "promised" him that he would start and they are stuck with that promise, that makes no sense and will tear the team apart. They must see something we have only seen in glimpses so far.

I agree that I can't think of one successful college QB in the past 10 years who couldn't run a little. The guy Beck on Ga. is not fast but he'll move around a little and he of course has a much better offensive line in front of him.

DI I appreciate the mention my friend. Actually I hate to be correct, but last nite was a definitive statement we need a dual threat qb.

I included surf's comments as well per Belin's injury status. I thought Henry was healed. That's a bummer when added to fact Loftis is being redshirted. How about at least giving Jordan Moore some Wildcat reps!!!??

Nonetheless if you'd told me we would be 5-1 (with the Bell back where it belongs), I would have signed off on it immediately!! Get back in the lab Manny. Tinker with this offense.14 points isn't going to cut it in ACC play!!

Lift this is what scares me. In the age of NIL, coaches become like contract negotiators too. All I know is Maalik commented after signing with Duke "I wanted to go somewhere I would play," and that's certainly been the case. Was the Murphy-Loftis preseason qb duel merely a charade? Did staff know all along Maalik would be the starter?

Whatever, we are 5-1 and I am thrilled with the record. Manny and Co need to get to work, as offense needs serious tinkering.

So how do we all feel now that the NLI (national letter of intent) has been stopped by the NCAA. Seems like they are really trying to pare down competitive schools in football. 20 extra schollies last month and now no NIL? I think the power schools are going to destroy the mid-level universities

I'm not sure what the NLI concept achieved, with football recruits routinely breaking verbal commitments.

The NCAA is running scared. It has lost every legal battle and is just knuckling under to any challenge. The only thing keeping the wealthiest schools (i.e., those that have alums who would rather give to football programs than academic programs) from collecting every highly ranked athlete is that some athletes would rather actually play rather than sit on the bench and collect their paychecks. Those are the athletes that Duke will need to focus on.

That’s a good article, and the grades seem to stand up to the visual test. That said, it is not particularly encouraging regarding our skill positions, starting with QB. IMO, this is the weakest we’ve been at that position in a while. Murphy has a strong arm, but no touch, poor accuracy and can’t/won’t run. Not to mention he throws into coverage and has a slow release. I’m really not sure why we went after him. I keep waiting for Manny to go to Henry or Grayson.

The grades didn’t include our kickers. They’re the best we’ve had in some time.

To be clear: This is the article referenced, mid-term PFF grades and explainers for Duke's offense.

I wish PFF did special teams grades but alas ... Duke's kicking game has been great and there have been some awful gaffes on the other special teams units.

Thanks Conor, nice read. I think Friday nite's game is a pretty significant, for several reasons:

A win means:

1/Bowl Eligibility
2/Gets the we've never beaten FSU (as conference member), off our back.
3/Re-establishes some momentum before a huge contest (also @ home) vs SMU the following week.

Questions: Obviously ACC coaches play it cool on injury updates at weekly pressers(last several years rule change)as player availability isn't required until what, day of game? However you have any feelings on availability of Jac.Moore, Morris, Bergeron for Friday nite?

Conor, always appreciate all you do....

There has been no rule change about injury updates; in the ACC, it's just up to the coach's discretion on how much or little he wants to share. Manny simply said they're working through who's going to be back and available and that's pretty much all we've got until Friday night, unless/until things leak from within the program.

In bigger picture, I've been counting down the days until the ACC makes injury reports mandatory -- at least for league games, which is (I think) what the B1G and SEC do. Clemson provides an availability report something like 2 hours before every game but to my knowledge, they're the only ACC team that does.

Scuttlebut: Anybody hearing what's making the rounds on some other Duke message boards: a majority of Ex-Duke players feel Grayson Loftis is THE BEST qb on Duke's roster??

Also for @ConorONeill. Conor I know this applies to True Freshman.but since LOFTIS IS REDSHIRTED, Can he play in up to four games, and still not burn his redshirt?? Thanks in advance.

There is no rule that says a player has to be a freshman to get the 4-game maximum redshirt rule. That's why N.C. State's QB last year, MJ Morris, bailed after playing in his 4 games. It's how Wake Forest bought Sam Hartman an extra season (that wound up using at ND), by only playing him in 4 games in 2019 after he started 9 games in 2018.

So, yes, IF the plan is to redshirt Grayson Loftis, he can play in 4 regular-season games plus any postseason game(s) -- that is actually a rule change this year -- and not lose a season of eligibility.

Hart, I'm afraid former players don't have a vote on who plays QB for Duke.

I don't understand if Belin is #2 on the depth chart, why he isn't getting some reps. I assume Manny and his staff are seeing great things in practice that we haven't seen yet, which merits having a stationary QB playing in a sport that almost requires a mobile QB.

FYI Bradley Gompers has taken a huge jump in the 247 ratings to a 94 mid-level 4 star which explains the fact that in recent weeks he has received offers from Penn state and Michigan and other schools like UVA. kid is flat out balling
right now he has 16P5 offers. WOW

Wow, thanks for the scoop Lift!!
🙄

I don't think staff is necessarily seeing "great things" from Belin. He's simply thought of as a "packages"qb at this point in special situations.

Well done Conor as always.

I really don't know what to expect tonight. It sounds like from Manny's press conference that we shouldn't expect much different as far as our QB's running abilities. Therefore we have to hope that the running game is as good as every other opponent has been against FSU. And the defense has to avoid big plays. I am encouraged that some injured players should be back on both sides of the ball and that has to help. I hope the students come out and really support its team tonight!
