Almost official game day thread- Arizona state

I suspect that Harris and Evans will only get in for blowouts and perhaps when we are struggling on offense and need to give someone else a chance to get us going. I don't see them getting more than 5 min. a game or so on the average.

I agree unless something changes during the season

I was impressed when Gillis drove and knocked the ASU player down. He is a grown man. Cooper may not be the best freshman on his own team. He probably is, but Kon has been better so far.

I can’t say I agree with this . Teams will now focus on Kon . And we’re looking at one exhibition and one charity game . The ArIzona St game when Kon came on in the second half , I really believe they were gassed to the point trying to cover every scorer Duke had on the court was just getting more exhausting. Cooper is the best in terms of all around game . As we get into the Kentucky and Arizona games like them they have better talent and we will get a better gauge on Kon .

It’s only one game, and Arizona St doesn’t appear to be that good, but they aren’t The Little Sisters of the Poor either. And as Hurley said in the postgame, Oh Shit!

I think last season left a bitter taste in Jon’s mouth. So he built a team of men, that aren’t chumps, around a freshmen class that we think is loaded.

This could be a really special team.

At first glance I’m a bit worried about how to play everyone. Give the freshman enough burn to come back for next year. Only 3 recruits so far. At least 3 players will be gone off current roster. Maybe return about 7 guys, add the freshman and no need for too many transfers.
Play the 5 th year guys enough to see what they can do but since they will be leaving anyway don’t waste okaying time on them until the ACCT.

What seven guys return is my question?
Mal, Flagg, Kon, one of Proctor or Foster to the draft and maybe Evans depending on how he plays on a limited role .
Sion and Gillis are out of eligibility.
Returning might be Foster, Big Pat, Brown and Harris . Maybe Evan’s and the kid from rice .

This can’t work. There are no guarantees anymore. A kid could play 15-18 minutes a game and still leave. It’s all about winning now.

We are living in the era of college basketball where we just need to expect that top programs will lose their top 5-7 players to the draft or transfer and reload the following year. We are going to see some players leave and shake our heads. It happens. The anomalies are few and far between....see Proctor. I agree with Mac, it's about winning THIS year, and figure next year out after this year. Kids have lots of influencers guiding them, for better or worse.

Will we see a deep bench this year? It seems we ask that most years. Under K I would be very skeptical. I will admit that this particular year sure does seem like a year where we could go 10 deep. But the reality is that it goes against the grain of every Duke season in the past 25+ years.

With that said, I do think this team is special and is oozing potential perhaps more than any in recent history. Barring injury or serious dissent in the locker room, I really think this is a very strong national championship contender. Won't be easy, nothing is certain, but the parts are all there. We have top recruits, a couple veterans, and some beast transfers. Dang it's good to be a Duke fan.

How many deep we go is dependent upon the score.

We might play 10 in the first half but if the game is only say an 8 point spread with 10 minutes to go, we’re playing no more than 8.

We all have to remember Jon did give everyone who left a chance to stay but was up front with them about what he expected going forward . They all chose to leave

I really liked Mark Mitchell, but I have to admit, I'll take Cooper and Malik over him and that leaves him with maybe 15 minutes a game.

Kon does everything Power did and better.

Stewart would have been nice for about 15-18 minutes a game but I don't think he was going to stay for that much PT and no way he gets more with Cooper, Malik and Khaman on the roster.

And Schutt? Again, I had high hopes for him but what does he do that Sion or even Evans and Harris don't do?

So there you have it.
