Candid assessments are refreshing as opposed to Cut's bragging about how fast the team was and about how much improvement the team was allegedly making. OFC
In the same vein, each week after we got pasted, Cut would talk about how just a few things needed correcting and were within our control, how the next week we’d be focusing on them and how proud he was of their willingness to fight. It was almost as if he hadn’t even been at the game, much less looked at the tape.

Spot on, Jeff. Reminds me of how angry that made me.

Few notes about the spring game tomorrow nite. I think it will be more conventional and true football than what we've seen in the past. I am grateful for this.

Also, looks like Moore and Leonard (qbs in competition for top spot)will be only guys switching and playing for both Blue and White squads. However it's refreshing the only other qb listed is Gavin Spurrier. Hope the grandson of the ol'ball coach gets some reps!

If you can't make it out (and a decent crowd would be nice to welcome Mike Elko!), espn.com is listing the game to be presented live on ACC NETWORK and ESPN APP. Let's hope this is TRUE!!! OFC

Can confirm this part -- ACC's commitment to football means every school's spring game has been/will be televised. I'll have a primer up this afternoon with some details.

Fwiw, I've heard some of the broadcasts have been ... rough. Not to douse excitement, just sharing what I've heard from people who watched other schools' spring games last weekend.

Conor as always appreciate the info. Quite frankly I am not a huge fan of most ACC NETWORK broadcasts. Just glad we're getting the coverage on tv. Your print media coverage on the Blue Devils is STELLAR!! OFC

Quick first impressions on the spring game guys???? Obviously a lot to work on for Coach Elko and his staff: TOO MANY TURNOVERS, AND TOO MANY DROPPED PASSES.

I thought both Riley Leonard and Jordan Moore both did some good things at qb. Riley may have the stronger arm and made some nice throws! However I think we may have a budding star in Jordan Moore at qb!! #8 made some dazzling runs, shows a solid grasp of the RPO, and proved he can throw the ball as well. It's a close race, but right now, Moore is my man.

Running backs- we have some potential, particularly Jaquez Moore and Terry Moore. Both ran well, but Jacquez looks like he could play often!

Receivers- we have plenty and Harding made multiple catches, Pancol and Calhoun also pulled in some catches. Also, Dalmolin and Finney at TE showed me we may be more solid at TE than I thought!

Defense was very active, creating turnovers, and overall coverage in the secondary was pretty good. We're still a step slow however, and Jordan Moore's runs gave 'em fits.

I will be pleased with 4-5 wins and a competitive, exciting team in Elko's 1st year. Be interesting to see what we bring in from the transfer portal now!

so it is still early but the one breakout i am enjoying reading about is sahmir hagans at slot. he was one of those recruits that the rating services were all over on. espn rated him a 77 upper three star. 247 had him at 85 mid three and then rivals at 5.4 two star. seems espn might have been right which is great for us. i watched the scrimmage on the acc network and he is quick and solidly built. IF the goduke weight of 190 is true then that is a body that will be able to take hits over the course of a season.

Going to need some help on the D-line, I'd say. This isn't revelatory but you *have* to get pressure in order to have a good defense in the ACC, especially with the level of QB in the conference this season.

I like their young DBs. They should have at least a few solid ACC players (maybe not right away, but down the road) in Trent Broadnax, Cameron Bergeron, Chandler Rivers, Nathan Vail, Joshua Pickett.

There was ... chatter ... at the spring game that the starting QB next season is not on the roster, i.e. they'd add a transfer. I'm keeping an eye on that.

Wow! Interesting, but I shouldn't be too surprised I suppose. I just hope we're not playing with fire: a new qb comes in, and Jordan and Riley could both bail in the portal?? OFC

I am thrilled with the Datrone Young pick-up in the secondary. We need some leadership back there, and an accomplished grad transfer fits the bill!! OFC

Seth Davis, the running back commit from Texas, decommitted today.

Not exactly unexpected: He visited a few other schools recently (Ole Miss was one of them).

Agree Conor, can't say I was too surprised. Its a shame the value of verbal commits grows less and less. Coach Elko, welcome to the cold, cruel, harsh realities of Duke football.

soph rb trent davis to portal. kinda think it is good for both sides. think the freshman rb's really shined in spring practice and he started counting play opportunities in his head and said hmmm. wish him well

per his twitter he says he will do better academically.

Really doesn't concern me. I think our running game is in good hands. OFC

Running back is one of the positions that they can afford a little attrition.

Also of note:

Would love to have Byrd. Thanks for the update Conor! Byrd had 87 tackles, 10 sacks in three years at Wyoming. Interestingly the Cowboys coach is Craig Bohl the DC whiz at Duke in Fred Goldsmith's 8 win first season in '94. Devils lost to Wisconsin in Hall of Fame Bowl, but Bohl turned around the defense. He was off to greener pastures after one year at Duke.

Duke DB enters portal, Kendrick Torain who enrolled in '18 announced he's transferring yesterday. Frankly I have very little recollection of Torain. A 3 star out of hs, he did have significant interest from other P5 schools, even decommiting from UCLA. However he only appeared in only 2 games over 4 years at Duke. This is courtesy of Duke Rivals, so our buddy @ConorONeill apparently broke story. OFC

GoDuke.com reports Mateo Durant signed with the Steelers as an UFA. He could have a decent shot at making the team, or at least the practice squad. To my knowledge, he’s the only player from last year’s team to be signed so far (having none drafted, which is pretty bad). Good luck Mateo!

Pretty sure DB Josh Blackwell got picked up as a UDFA as well jeffrey. Also you're 100% spot on: no one drafted from last year's squad is "pretty bad."

It's especially poor for a P5 program, which underscores the poor job of player development by Cutcliffe & Co.If Elko can pull off 4-5 wins next year, I would be VERY HAPPY considering the Cutcliffe aftermath... OFC

ken torain cb to the portal. never played so a good move for him. 2 years of eligibility left so go some where you can see the field.
Wonder why he never played much surf? High 3-star, had decommited from UCLA. Interest from NCSU, UVA, NEBRASKA others prior to enrolling in '18...Wish him well...

Conor AS ALWAYS, MUCH APPRECIATED!! Wow, good thing we nabbed Jordan!!! I knew we lost multiple DB's, but didn't realize we were that thin in the secondary. Stinson does seem really quick (our KO return specialist too). I think he will do well. Any info on a kid I think returning, by the last name of Fisher-Smith?? Could he play DB?? He's been good on special teams. Conor thx again!
