It is ... absolutely going to take more than a year to fix. Hopefully my story didn't give you the impression this team is going to be among the top teams in the ACC next season.

I like the enthusiasm but I still feel like this fix is going to take more than one year.
The way I look at it, the important thing is that we will not have a repeat of last year which would have occurred if Cut had been allowed to stay The current staff, apart from building a team, has the added burden of fixing the damage which Cut inflicted on the program. So, winning a few games and not giving up 40 a game would satisfy me. Anything beyond that would be icing. OFC

I think that Duke can get some elite players in the transfer portal every year. You need to employ a Moneyball philosophy.

Give up on recruiting players who will take three years to develop. Let them get bigger and faster at South Florida or Iowa State , and then transfer to Duke.

Michigan State had a great year because they loaded up on transfers

It's good we're getting some bodies thru the transfer portal. I think three star Evan Deckers will make a contribution as long snapper.

I am however, a little more concerned about the two interior guys we're bringing in on the O-Line. Looks like Andre Harris rates only a two star, and no info per rating I can locate on Jack Burns. I am truly relying on our NEW and ENERGETIC staff per DEVELOPMENT!!!

another transfer in
chance lytle a 6'7'' 300lb OT from the colorado buffaloes commits.
think he is a solid depth piece behind barton and gelotte (who i hope are READY)
thats 3 ol guys. now lets see some dline guys coming in
Lytle is IMO, our best OL of the three to transfer in thus far!

Also this kid is apparently tearing it up in spring ball, Eric J Weatherly- just a freshman.54th rated RB in country:

the two names that seem to keep popping up in interviews are eric weatherly and sahmir hagans. great to see young players bringing pop.

hart, not trying to get anything started but just curious as to why you are thinking that a career back up from colorado is a better player than two multi-year starters at smaller schools? i know that lytle was higher rated out of high school, but due to injuries never became a starter. (lets hope he is healthy at last)
fyi per lytles interview on 247 he is coming in to be a guard and harris is to be an ot.

No offense taken surf!! My feelings are simply a hypothesis I guess for reasons you mentioned. Lytle was higher rated, (has been injured,) but IS from a bigger program. Sure he's had less PT, but he's been exposed to tougher competition.

Hey, I could be COMPLETELY WRONG. It doesn't matter if I am, as long as we get contributions from the guys. I just want us to win, and know Coach Elko and staff will make the right moves. Cheers Surf!!!

Duke picked up a commit from class of '23:

Jack Yates is versatile, playing LB, TE and even doing some long snapping. Honestly cannot glean if he's a diamond in the rough or not: he had offers from Cornell,Yale and UMass, among other non-P5s from what I can tell. 6'1 , 215pds.

Thank you Conor! Great report!

2 scholarship QBs, isn't that risky?

For now, not really. Even with the emphasis on physicality, the QBs are still in green jerseys and don't get taken to the ground. The glass-half-full outlook here is that the staff gets an extended look at both Moore and Leonard without having to also look at a third or fourth option.

Henry Belin IV comes in the summer but I wouldn't expect him to be in the mix. If you're a QB coming in the summer, you've either got to have massive injuries or be a phenomenally quick learner to play as a freshman.

I'd expect them to add a QB through the portal in late spring or summer, though. Two scholarship QBs is fine for now, but you can't enter the season with three scholarship QBs, one being a freshman.

The portal! Forgot about that. No disrespect to whom we have coming back but wouldn't mind getting someone who is stuck behind a big name QB and wants to start, so long as his name isn't Chase.

Conor I thoroughly enjoyed the report!! Thank you for making it available to us!!! Also I wanted to mention how pleased I am with the discipline of the new staff. We can't have goal line fumbles, and pleased to hear about Coleman having to do the extended "down-ups" as punishment! OFC

@Liftee Yeah, I think that's a safe bet -- though I don't know if this new staff would be turned away from somebody named Chase, hahaha. But the portal comes in two waves: After the season, and after spring ball. There's bound to be an influx in the next month or two of guys who don't see a path forward based on spring ball and need changes of scenery.

@hart2chesson My pleasure! I can't make all of them public because I've got to try to sell subs, but I'm happy to make some of them accessible. I'll add: The down-ups aren't just for fumblers. At the first practice I went to, the whole defense had to do them at the end because of missed assignments. I've got nothing to base it on, but it seems like the new staff is more hard-nosed, disciplinarian than Cut's.

This is kind of wishful thinking, But why not hire James Skalski as a graduate assistant. He was in the Clemson program for 6 years One of the toughest LB's I have seen. OFC

Wow. When you hear "we aren't nearly where we need to be", it tells you that Coach Smith can't believe how bad they are. Much like when Cut arrived and found a fat, out of shape team. Back to square one.

True Lift. Cut had let it really fall off the rails.

It was interesting to hear Smith be that forthcoming about how far behind they are defensively for all of the reasons yall have pointed out.

Elko has said a time or two in the past month that the defense isn't up to the level he wants them to be, but that's always sounded more like "it's going to take time to install this system and I'm not going to know what we have until we get into a game and the bullets are flying," at least to me.
