duke football news

hey i just noticed that vincent anthony was moved up to a 4 star ranking. good news and i think this is the right call by the rivals gang
Great to see V. Anthony get some love. This is turning out to be a solid class. If we add Bates and a couple of others, may break into the top 45 or so. I get the feeling that the 2023 class will be a very strong one. Jobe

Too bad - I was hoping his delay was a sign that Coach Elko was making some progress in persuading him to stay.
Third transfer Duke has lost to Bruins in three years. Pretty good players too: Smith, Bobo and Brittain Brown.

I think Elko worked Smith pretty hard to stay, but he had enough of the the old regime last year. We've got at least 7 or 8 transferring out, one transfer in so far. I know Elko is recruiting HARD for the future, and I am excited. However I would like to see us more active in the portal for the coming year.

i think you will see them much more active in the portal after the spring practices. i would think they would like to see what we have already have here before they go fishing for short term answers. there will be a new wave of kids transferring in the spring. right now i think they are looking long term and getting their feet in the high school pool.

UCLA continues their Duke pipeline-

"Smith is the second Duke player to make the move to UCLA so far this offseason, joining receiver Jake Bobo, who committed on Dec. 14. Quarterbacks coach and co-offensive coordinator Jeff Faris has also joined the Bruins as their next tight ends coach, signing on Jan. 19. Running back Brittain Brown may be preparing for a possible shot at the NFL this offseason, unable to return to UCLA for another year, but he transferred in from Duke in 2020." OFC

Bobo and Smith will no doubt benefit from better coaching at UCLA, particularly since their not under Faris as TE coach. Faris may have been hired primarily to recruit the high upside Smith to the Bruins. That's the way the big boys operate.

This is NOT sour grapes. However I lost any and all respect for UCLA when they pulled out of their bowl game with State at the last minute. OFC

Surf, are you suggesting that Cut may have influenced Smith's decision? Considering that Duke let Cut stay 1-2 years longer than his results deserved, he should be very grateful of everything Duke did for him.

i dont think cut told smith to leave. gary entered the portal before cut was let go. i think gary wants brighter lights and fans in the stands, things he wont get at duke. i do think that kelly probably called cut and he gave these guys a big thumbs up. as for being grateful, meh, who is ever happy with getting canned. i have read some stuff on other sites where it was not pleasant but Nina stayed her course and we are now much better off. that being said, lets give cut credit for this last recruiting class. he got some studs

I wouldn't put anything past Cut. Heard from some Iron Duke friends he was very bitter over his ouster, and the outcome was not amicable.

Also heard from a Duke writer and very reliable source, Cut "undermined" Gunnar Holmberg during the season. He was overheard saying disparaging things about GH on the headsets during games this year.Sounds like he's become a bitter old man.

BOOM cade anders 6'4'' 240lb te from ga commits for 2022. this is kinda a strange one because he committed to army after the 2021 season but instead of college he went to prep school. all the reviews/rankings on him are a year out of date. i like his size and i trust this staff.
One position Duke historically speaking has always made good use of! Sounds good surf! OFC

so with cade committing today and bates tomorrow at 10 am that gives us 2 of our 10 open schollies for next year gone. i think that the 8 schollies left are used on the trenches and a few on te/wr spots. i would not be surprised after the spring practice that one or two more players transfer out.

Why is that, Surf? Because they don't cut it during spring practice? OFC

Not to answer for Surf, but that would be my impression. When you see you’re down in the depth chart at the end of spring practice, and know who’s coming in, you start looking at other greener pastures. The new transfer rules have made that rather easy.

ESPN has our recruiting class ranked 11th in the ACC. Even though it doesn’t take into account the recent commitment developments, that’s pretty discouraging. I’m not expecting instant success, but it clearly shows that Coach Elko has his work cut out for him, even 2 years down the road. Hopefully we can get some transfers in.

jeffrey is right on it. let me give an example THAT I DONT KNOW WILL HAPPEN. say a player like luca diamont who has been here and is the oldest qb in the room is officially bypassed by leonard, moore and the new freshman qb bellin. do you stay or do you transfer somewhere you can play? most of our kids are only going to be a college player so do you want to be on the field or on the bench? a new coaching staff might be looking to the youth of the team to coach up rather than the ''eldar'' players who are kinda set in their ways.

Early in Cut's regime, he would "coach up" 2 and 3 star kids. That stopped happening. I'm counting on Elko and his new staff to be able to do that. If so, that will make us competitive while we wait for more talented kids to commit.
Lift agreed! OFC

Damn. Mack got a big raise. How is Duke football ever going to compete with this coaching wizard? Congrats ged! Playoffs or bust!
It's not my money. Don't understand why he received a raise. I hope that he takes advantage of the training facilities at UNC. He's carrying too much weight. It's tough to sleep well for an older man if he's heavy. Congratulations on the QB commit from Gaffney QB. Our best salesman grew up there, and says that he's tremendous

This is very cool. Elko fought hard to hold the 2022 recruiting class together and even add some additional quality guys. Moving from the No. 12 ACC class for 2021 to No. 7 for 2022. Cut gets the initial credit for most of the class, but who knows how many would have stayed if Cut had hung on. The fact that this class remained together reflects Elko's hard work in trying circumstances. OFC

I agree DI. Coach Elko’s press conference the other day (linked here) is worth watching - he admitted they were really challenged to get up to speed, not just with new recruits, but just talking to the ones who had previously committed. He also said that this was largely why they couldn’t get into the transfer portal then, but expects they’ll be active this spring. https://goduke.com/
