What really infuriated me was Tech's 77 yard TD. This is the third game in which a back coming out of the backfield is left uncovered. Why do our players not seem to know who has coverage responsibility in that situation? OFC
Trooper Taylor- FIRST YEAR EVER DB COACH. Cut merely shuffled him from wideouts coach. DI its just a simple wheel route, and we have no one spying him on D. OFC

In all fairness, Taylor's resume shows that he coached cornerbacks at Arkansas State with some success, and was a highly regarded recruiter. However the results on the field for Duke do not reflect great coaching I must admit.

Agreed. I have not seen any of the teams we have played make such bonehead mistakes. OFC
Amen, we tend to leave receivers out on an island to themselves. Sick of this finding creative ways to lose Duke football games. The great coaching guru walks around on sideline, hands behind his back as if he is the unquestioned authority on football. OFC

Arkansas State huh? Lol, well still, no Power Five schools and it shows. OFC

Well, Duke had a horrible season last year and the consequence to the coaching staff was...switch them around. No accountability.

I bet there is not another program at Duke that is ranked lower than, or less nationally regarded than, the football program. And it's one of the most visible programs on the national level. Does the administration care about this embarrassment? I guess we'll find out.

Preparation. Which is the coach’s job. Which isn’t being done.

Duke didn't look poorly coached. Most importantly, the effort was excellent. Holmberg and Durant were sensational. Duke was up three very late in Georgia Tech territory. You have to put the game away in that situation . I would have said that Duke looked well coached, but you have to close the deal in that situation

They can look well-coached, but even DL DeWayne Carter made a startling yet OH SO TRUE admission after yesterday's game: "Sometimes we look like The Bad News Bears." They do indeed, and "The Chronicle" made a solid reference point to poor coaching: Why did Duke take a timeout yesterday w/1:09 remaining? Georgia Tech was OUT OF TIMEOUTS.

OFC

Wallace Wade Stadium was empty yesterday. I know it was a rainy day, but there was no one there! So much for millions of dollars in renovations. For nothing.
Liftee I think about this often. "Build it (or refurbish it) and they will come." NOT!!! At least not until we begin to put the program back together....Folks will continue to stay away.... OFC

The few times that Duke had a meaningful home game, they had a good crowd. Unfortunately, each time Duke laid an egg in the game. Duke football does not have a lot of good will built up that it can afford to mess up when it has a big game, let alone have a series of losses to mediocre teams. The students and local residents don't care enough to come out to see a bad product.

I am not a football expert but over my lifetime I have seen enough college football to know when I am seeing 2 bad teams. That is what I saw last Saturday;.

so i guess to me the question becomes how bad do we want to win. jamey chadwell of coastal was found guilty of multiple violations while head coach at charleston southern and they had to vacate 18 wins plus a big south championship. good coach but do we want a win at all cost guy. maybe we do but i am just putting the facts out there. should duke drop our standards some more for football so we can get in on more kids? there is a good player right now that tried to commit to us and the academic people said no. looks like he will be going to va tech unless.... i think it is DEGREES harder to find 25 players that will be here for 4-5 years to meet our standards for football than the rent a guys we now are getting for our one year basketball roster. kyrie irving could not have met the standards in my mind. flat earth my ass.
this being said i think we should be 5-1 right now and i think we could have been a lot better in the UNC game with better play calling, coaching and if we stop the self inflicted wounds. we were better than ga tech and charlotte but we keep hurting ourselves.

Gotta take a swing at a coach like Chadwell. Read some things about the violations at Charleston Southern. Sounds like it was an athletic department deal so lots of blame to go around. I get that it may cause a bit of hesitation but this is the type of coach you try and get. Afraid it may be getting closer to him ending up at South Carolina.

The sad thing is that there are no signs that the coaching will improve or that the reoccurring problems will cease. OFC

I once heard from a dean that football recruits who couldn't get into Duke were take at Wake. I don't think that's the case any more. I still feel the players we are getting are no longer being coached up to 4 star level like they were in Cut's best years. The quality is no worse than the A & M year but the quality of preparation is nowhere near the same.

Another GAMEDAY, as Duke (3-3,0-2) hits the road vs Virginia(4-2,2-2). Virginia is a 10.5 favorite for the early afternoon tilt, and expect lots of points.

Our Blue Devils let another slip away last week (ala Charlotte) giving up a length of field touchdown drive to blow it. Blame terrible defensive scheme by coaches once again. This is one of the more experienced and deepest secondaries we've had in recent years, and our coaching staff has had them out of position ALL YEAR.Thats unfortunately a HORRIBLE FORMULA FOR TODAY.

Duke will see the best qb they've seen this year in left-handed gunslinger Brennan Armstrong. Yes, BEST(he's putting up better numbers than UNC's Sam Howell so far). Armstrong is throwing for a RIDICULOUS AVERAGE OF OVER 400 yds a GAME. He has a stable of receivers he throws to and UVA can put up POINTS IN BUNCHES! They won at LOUISVILLE last week despite trailing by 17 in 4th qtr, and are coming in confident with consecutive road wins over Miami and the Cards.

Now, like Duke, Virginia's defense is awful and Duke can put up points. Will Cut try to keep Armstrong & co off the field with a conservative attack or actually let Gunnar throw downfield??(Holmberg's putting up some pretty decent numbers himself).

Regardless, UVA just has too many weapons and Cav coach Bronco Mendenhall owns Cut(5-0)and UVA has won the last 6 over our Devils. I think maybe we keep it interesting for a while however. Ultimately I have UVA winning 52-35, which would go over the projected 69.5 total. Wow, would a Duke win be sweet? Move to 4-3, headed into the BYE week. Not going to happen. 12:30 kick, Bally Sports Net. #GoDuke

i know we ALL want fresh coaching but the players are just snake bit. just in the first quarter Bobo drops a ball right in his hands in the red zone. we hit the posts on a fg try. db cuts in front of uva receiver for interception and pick six and ball bounces up and off his hands to the receiver behind him. the coaches job is to put the players in position to make plays and they are. our players just dont make the plays they need to

Alright Blue Devils. Wake Forest got a good look last night. Don't miss out on this young man.

Didnt see a SHUTOUT from the worse defense in the ACC coming. This loss was WAY BEYOND EMBARRASSING RIGHT from the clanked field goal off the upright early, to the fumble on goal line at end and all in-between.

David Cutcliffe owes Duke fans something hes never offered after a loss these last three years:AN APOLOGY. Today marked yet another annual edition of Duke not showing up to play.

Also what is it w/Holmberg's ineptitude to move the offense on the road in ACC GAMES? 7 points CONBINED vs 2 atrocious defenses, UNC and UVA. Holmberg has basically channelled an inner Chase Brice in the two contests. In all fairness, he did have some drops (Bobo early as @surfdevil noted). Also Holmberg was limited in downfield throws, as our staff saw fit to morph back into east-west passing.

Defensive secondary looked as bad as I speculated, and Armstrong shredded us.About the only bright spot today was a deep nail I think was hammered into Cutcliffe's job security. Cut absolutely, positively HAS TO GO!!!

When a team cannot even compete in the ACC COASTAL it must look inward and see whats wrong. Cut you resurrected us briefly and we appreciate it. However its time to stop legally stealing 2.7 annually from Duke. Please, I urge you- walk away.....OFC

Awful tackling, repeated untimely penalties, unimaginative play-calling which UVA had no problem predicting, porous pass defense, turnovers, etc., etc., etc. Indicative of the unproductive "situational" passing scheme is the fact that Gunnar's passes averaged only 3.9 yards. Instead of taking the blame himself, Cut says the entire team should "own" this game. He offers no explanation of why we are in the state we are in or, beyond some cheesy philosophy on being strong and moving on, of what changes we can make to correct the repetitive mistakes. He does not talk about what we could have done but did not do or what we did do but should not have done. I am sick of it. I've read my last Cut presser because they never change. OFC

This was about the 4th or 5th game in the last 3 years where the opponent took their foot off the petal in the 3rd quarter. Virginia could have laid 60 on us easily.

I am thankful for the excitement Cut brought to the team for a few years. But now he's ruining his legacy by hanging on. Do the right thing, retire now, saying he thinks it's time to move on, let an assistant run the team for the rest of the season and let the administration get a head start on picking a replacement.

I don't think this will happen and we may as well write the rest of the season off. Empty home stadium, games over by halftime, painful press conferences afterward.

Cut's act is way, way old, and guys I am sick of it too! Cut's stock line after a loss "We're going to run to it, not run from it." Yeah rite, another annual BOMBING where we completely do a NO-SHOW!!!

I do want to give a HUGE SHOUTOUT to the ANGRY Duke fans on social media this weekend, large numbers calling for Cut's dismissal! AD Nina King is getting hammered on twitter to take DEFINITIVE ACTION on getting Cut out of the picture. I don't mind letting him finish the season, as long as I know the "great qb whisperer" will not be returning in 2022.

Cut has lost the locker room, its obvious the team has no faith in him, and tallied a paltry 7 points COMBINED against 2 atrocious defenses in UNC and UVA. Duke is 0-3 on the road, 0-3 in conference, and now has lost 16 of its last 18 conference games, and 8 consecutive ACC games since last year.

Is there really more evidence needed to get rid of Cutcliffe?? No, get on the FIRE CUT TRAIN. Tweet Dr.King @ninaking22
and email is nina.king@duke.edu

Maybe I am an idealist guys, but I am hoping Dr.King has already met with Cutcliffe or it will come tomorrow. She can offer him the option of letting him finish the season, and step down after this nightmare year is over. In fact I cannot fathom ANY CIRCUMSTANCE in which Cut will be in Durham next season! OFC

If I were Cutcliffe, I just don't see any reason to continue the season as it is going. He must know that there is no turning it around now. The schedule only gets harder. Wake is going to be another disaster where they score on the first 6 possessions. Let an assistant coach the team. Can't get any worse.

I'm thinking that Cut is too damn stubborn to even consider voluntarily stepping down. Other than saying that he owns Duke's losses, I have yet to hear him state that he has done anything wrong. OFC

What happened? My guess is, first, his good assistants left and he replaced them with less qualified and inexperienced substitutes. When they failed, he reshuffled them but didn't bring in anyone better. He lost his willingness to take chances and be imaginative. And when it got worse, he dug in his heels and wouldn't change a thing. Only at Duke (or an Ivy League school) could Cut have survived last year. COVID didn't only affect Duke, it affected everyone, but Cut and Duke act as if they were the only ones affected.

So to my surprise we get another nice recruit tonight. The wr from Greensboro Mekhi Wall commits. Say what you want but they are getting good players this year. he has 13 power 5 offers. No great kids but lots of solid solid kids have committed to us despite our record

As bad as our football program is, the school still has plenty to offer with a Duke degree. Its encouraging to get a kid like Wall, and underscores the value of a Duke degree. Thats the biggest selling point. Otherwise why would a kid, especially an offensively explosive player like Wall, want to play in a offensive scheme of David Cutcliffe????

I saw some tape on Wall and he has Jameson Crowder like moves/speed.I hope we can hold on to him, but will be SHOCKED if we do.

We can hold onto guys like this if a new coach is named no later than December, who is energetic, has a good background, and promises a wide open and innovative offense and aggressive defense.

Clearly there isn't going to be an immediate change, or it would have happened yesterday.

Sadly you are right. We are going to have to suffer through this entire season. OFC
