Do not pass gold, Do not collect $200.....Yesterday's ugly win over a very weak Northwestern team does nothing to elevate this fb program in long-term. The sunshine poopers can pump their chests, but to have to go to the wire to hold on after a 30-7 lead??? Inexplicable.

Now, I was thrilled by the 1st half, and happy for our entire team!!!!That actually had the LOOK of a Cut coached team in his brief glory years. Wasnt it great to SEE US PASS LONG DOWNFIELD FIRST PLAY FROM SCRIMMAGE!!!!??Offense hummed, defense was stout(we actually forced TO's) nice kicking game, etc. I WAS JACKED!!! (Never mind this is A WEAK NW TEAM).

Then the Cut coached program we all know and don't believe in emerged for the second half. After 30 first half points in first half, we didnt pee a drop 2nd stanza. Mateo lost a fumble for 2nd time in game, Gunnar tossed an Int,and a 2nd string qb (Marti- more on him later) brought the 'Cats back.

As I said, more on Marti: if Dewayne Carter(great game yesterday) doesnt strip him
of the ball and force a fumble deep in Duke territory, I am convinced we lose. That was the DEFINING MOMENT OF THE OUTCOME, because Marti was hurt on that play and out rest of game. Even with his fumble, if he doesnt get hurt- I am still convinced NW at least forces overtime.

I am SO GLAD FOR THE DUKE KIDS WE WON THE GAME, but this team could be SO MUCH MORE CONSISTENT AND SHARPER IF THEY WERE BETTER COACHED. Forget about Kansas, Cut can't even screw that up. Who knows, we may get lucky and win a conference game. However if things go like I think and we win two more at most and the Northwestern win is pivotal in keeping Cut another year? Yesterday's WIN will be one of the MOST COSTLY in Duke football history. OFC

Signs of poor Duke coaching were plenty. Most obvious was when time was running out in the first half, Duke with the ball sent in an unnecessary substitute. That allowed NW's coach to slowly send in substitutes of his own, running 15-20 important seconds off of the clock and outsmarting the Duke coaching staff. Cut's resulting expression of anger was hilarious. The receiver on NW's TD pass was completely wide open because BOTH safeties covered another receiver. indicating that at least one of them did not know what to do in that situation. Two unsportsman-like conduct penalties against offensive linemen. Offensive linemen lining up off the line of scrimmage. Allowing an NW touchdown drive with only a minute left in the half. Not adjusting our offensive scheme in response to NW's halftime adjustments on defense. Inability to convert 2 short redzone opportunities into TD's. I am not sure Duke was the better team and am thankful the game did not last 5 minutes longer. But it is still a win, I'll take it. OFC

FUTURE SCHEDULING:

Much has been written (including here) about our NON-CONFERENCE cupcake scheduling (I call it "Cut"cake scheduling) because our current coach demands it for most part. It doesn't prepare us for CONFERENCE games later, and neither propels our sorry home ATTENDANCE. This is a hypothetical, thoughts????

ECU
Northwestern
Appalachian
NC State(you can use one crossover opponent a year as a non-conference game)

Leave NW, and toss Charlotte (yeah I know a game we had no biz losing), A&T and Kansas. Play at least 2-3 of the 4 AT HOME listed earlier, and you have a more attractive, competitive schedule bound to put more folks in WW. Who cares if the other schools bring thousands?????

More INTEREST would be generated in Duke Football! Our admin would be VIRTUALLY FORCED to enhance parking and tailgating experiences and its a better Gameday all way around!

Agree 100%. We need games that will put butts in seats. Even the biggies schedule patsies , Oklahomas schedule is a joke for a "power" school. They just do it for a different reason. But , the schools you named, except for NW would bring lots of fans. Basketball should not be the only big bread winner, it brings in a lot, but not what good well attended football games would. I really dont know how Duke can afford to fund all the other minor sports with just BB income.

Preach NOLE!!!! OFC

I think that you could convince ecu and app st to play two games in Durham in exchange for one away. I like the UNC vs Wake model of playing each other in games that count as non-conference

It was fun listening to sports personality, Mike Wilbon, complain about Northwestern's QB who transferred from Clemson. He could not understand how a Clemson QB could play so poorly. It was reminiscent of this board last year

GAMEDAY! Its another 4:00 home start, as Duke plays its 3rd straight home game vs Kansas. On paper, Duke makes Kansas look awful. Hard to believe we're a double digit favorite vs a P5 school isnt it???!!! Looking thru some comparison stats yesterday the contrasts were striking, and you wouldn't think Duke actually loss to Charlotte.

Make no mistake Kansas is "TURRIBLE" in Charles Barkley terms. Theres probability for MUCH MORE "FOOL'S GOLD" in this one. Duke could look great, but it won't tell us what type team we really have if we blow the Jayhawks out of Wallace Wade. Lose today, Cut should get the resignation speech ready. Kansas offense has shown VERY LITTLE, with minimal yardage running and passing. The Kansas D has been shredded by Baylor and Coastal Carolina (two teams better than any we've played). Their only win was over FCS South Dakota St.

The only way I see Duke losing is if Kansas is really up for a game they view as possibly their BEST CHANCE FOR A WIN THE REMAINDER OF THE SEASON. Duke would also have to perform like the Duke of the 2nd half did vs Northwestern. Thus, a loss is possible but fortunately not probable. I like Duke 38-24, not quite covering the 16 point spread. 4pm kick, ACC Network. Next week, the fun begins with conference play, TRUE REALITY CHECK, @ UNC...smh.....

That was fun to watch. So was State beating Clemson and Carolina losing. Wake looking real good so far. We could potentially ruin UNCs season early this year with a win next week. As has been said, our offense must play keep ahead to make that happen...

Jupiter would have to be perfectly aligned with Mars for Duke to beat the Cheats. Our defense has yet to stop anybody on a consistent basis. Our offense has yet to face a quality defense, not that the Cheats have one. We give up 33 points to Kansas.

DI I anticipate the Cheats throwing up a huge number of points on us, almost whatever they desire. Our defense is about as resilient as a penny rubber band. 22 points was the max for Kansas prior to yesterday's game. The Jayhawks scored 24 in THE FIRST HALF against Duke!!! Our offense is putting up big numbers, but we still dont know if its FOOLS GOLD, because of the weak schedule we're playing.

REAL FOOTBALL starts next week at the Cheats. They'll be mad. Remember the 66-31 loss over there in '15? Its way too early for predictions, but I expect an @$$ whipping of this sort right now.If the Solar System does line up just right and we come thru on the 1% chance of winning, I will dance along with Cut in a post game celebration of all time... True. I'm just hoping the cheats D continues to play like they're in AFAM class and give minimal effort 😛

Cut brilliantly explains that "we gave up too many explosive plays" to Kansas. Well, we have given up multiple explosive plays to every team on our schedule. Come to think of it, when in the last 5 years have we not given up explosive plays?

Preach DI.....Its why I am every bit as adamant he still be fired. If he was 3-1 vs a legit schedule I would be backing off, but its been cupcake city. Meanwhile hes dancing in the locker room like we just won the Coastal.... smh...OFC

Agreed, Hart. This is this team's first real test. We are playing the talented Cheats at their home. If Kansas had too many explosive plays, how can Cut keep the Cheats from doing the same thing? OFC
DI I can't see it either. Wish I could. OFC

OK, Hart, we beat Notre Dame at their place one time when we were not even remotely supposed to. Maybe lightning can strike in the same place more than once. Miracles can happen. Here's hoping. OFC. GTHC.
We can dream brother. Thing that scares me is Charlotte rung us up for 31 points. GEORGIA STATE, who The Cheats steamrolled, held Charlotte to 10 in a 21-10 win. Theres other analytics too, I will get into later. Still, NOTHING will stop me from pulling for a miracle win Saturday.Losing to the Cheats SUCKS, but its my general expectation Saturday. OFC

Get ready, GAMEDAY an EARLY KICK vs The Cheaters at UNC. The fact UNC is struggling this year despite annual visions of glory, really doesnt change my opinion of this game. The Tar Heels have played a harder schedule in their 2-2 start, and the Blue Devils are 3-1 vs creampuffs.UNC plays especially well at home, (avg. 59 pts a game),is MAD after a drubbing at Georgia Tech last week, and has more talent than us. Even though its a rivalry game, its hard to eliminate those factors. I wish I could.Like Liftee said this week, if we could win only one more this year, this would be the game.

As you've no doubt heard all week, Duke's only chance is to make life tough on outstanding UNC qb Sam Howell. Given time to throw, I havent seen anyone in the country who can drop dimes in bunches like Howell. Ga Tech and Va Tech defenders LIVED in UNC's backfield. They sacked Howell, forced him into turnovers and thus stymied UNC's explosive offense.Unfortunately Duke has not displayed such a pass rush. Combine it with Duke's very generous secondary (even Kansas passed for about 300 yds), and its not a pleasant thought.

Conversely can Duke score? Their worksheet vs inferior competition indicates YES. UNC does not possess a great defense by any means, but its better than any we've seen. Still Holmberg, Durant, Bobo and company SHOULD be able to put up some points.
Best case scenario is Duke keeps offense on field much of time, and Howell's reps are somewhat limited.

Don't count on it. UNC will be out for blood today, and we have to match their intensity and get pressure on Howell. I just can't see it because we don't have the personnel up front. UNC is a 20 point favorite, and the over/under is like 72. I am not a betting man, and would never bet on a UNC-DUKE game. UNC ran up 66 pts on us in Chapel Hill in '15, Howell and company ran up 56 in Durham last year. If they have a chance UNC will run up 70 today after falling out of The Top 25. I look for the Tar Heels to run up a big number today, and easily cover the 20 pt spread. 12 noon kick on ESPN2.
I can dare to dream!!! Win one for the Duke Football Diehards on this board fellas!!! #GoDuke

In the old days of high school football, coaches would come out with all their gimmicks on Thanksgiving, the last game of the season. I'd like to see Cut treat this as the last game of the season. Blitz from all angles. Show them looks we haven't shown before. Take chances on offense.

We're coming off a monumental drubbing last year when UNX could have scored 100 on us if it wanted to. What is there to lose? It really can't be any worse than last year. Give us a fighting (puncher's) chance.

Like I said last week after the Kansas game, I was concerned about "FOOLS GOLD" from a 3 game win streak vs cupcakes. Afraid thats true, and Cut may have won his last game in Durham. His play calling is abysmal, and really hurt us today on short yardage plays when we were still in the game. I am so sick of the short sideline passes, motion penalties, and we also found out today our O-Line isnt all that great either. Sad thing is, this UNC team is not the team they were last year. Didn't matter.

I waited several hours before posting. As a Tar Heel fan, I don't want to sound like a jerk after my team won by 31 points. The UNC offensive line appears to have never been coached. The UNC Center is awful, and the left guard is almost as bad. It was a huge break to get the scoop and score TD. The ball went forward ten yards. I think Holmgren's arm was going forward. Duke's front seven played hard. Sam Howell is strong, but eventually one of the hard hits will get him. Duke's 3rd down play calls were bad. If it's 3rd and five, run straight ahead and set up 4th and one. UNC's front is fast, but could not stop a quick dive play. Duke's talent is a little better than I expected. The running back is very good.
