Liftee, sad to say but your words RING SO TRUE!!!! I see us becoming a VILLANOVA type school competing at a high level in hoops, but a MARKED LOWER LEVEL on the gridiron. I have considered your same analysis in recent years, and Friday nite obviously brought it closer to fruition. You know, Hart, the more I think about it, the more I think that the good Cut years (El Paso, the PInstripe bowl which I attended and was terrifically excited about Duke winning a Bowl) could be the last years we see Duke Football on the (sort of) national stage. I think the student body is apathetic and the alums and fans who care (like you, me and Sky) are not getting any younger. I just don't know what the alternative is. Without a high level football team I don't think Duke is going to be very attractive in the inevitable conference realignment. I see us going the way of the Big East. A sad state of affairs but unless Nina King and the trustees shows some real interest in an upgrade (by making a change by the end of this season and being willing to spend the necessary money to attract a good coach), Duke football will become the laughing stock of college athletics.
