duke football news

You're a good man ged, and very kind- thanks for the kind words! Yeah I have had a passion for Duke football since the 60s(hence the nickname, obviously). I remember that embarrassing loss to ECU from the Franks era _(ugh!). Anyway you're right new AD Nina King and the BOT are going to have to make some decisions!

I too have an idea somewhat that Cutcliffe will hang 'em up at the end of the year. A tipping point might be his stunningly bizarre move to shuffle the cards with his staff and reassign them as position coaches. It was bizarre because most have no expertise or specialty in their particular new position on staff. Some insiders tell me thats because Cut knows he will be gone at season's end. Thus he wanted to pad staff resumes in hopes they can find other jobs.Good luck on that!!! Lol...

OFC
or maybe he had no choice but to shuffle the cards because outside candidates don't want to join a sinking ship. OFC

nice article out there by steve wiseman interviewing ben albert
the 2 dline players were our first ones drafted since 2000 (1) and before that 1978 (1)
in alberts 5 seasons we have gotten 29 or more sacks 4 times. in the previous 7 seasons we did that one time
albert really likes our potential but says we must show it on the field
says carter 6'3'' 300lbs is a really good dt who played in all games last year and just got better as the season went on
called smith 6'2'' 320 lbs a ''special'' player at dt
said r j oben 6'4'' 255 is our best edge rusher
said michael reese 6'4'' 250 lb de has been really impressive in practice
ben frye 6'3'' 255lb de has been the leader and is in the best shape since here. ben has an interview on 247 where he said this is the first off season he has not been dinged up so he feels great.

Surf, it appears to me that of the players you listed, only two have DT size. Is Frye going to play inside again?

Everyone who follows Duke football is concerned about the defensive line, especially since they are likely to be on the field a good portion of the game.

Great summary @surfdevil ! Also good follow up by @Liftee . Keep fingers crossed on avoiding injuries!!!! OFC

That is a good article as are almost all of JS's work. I am concerned that Faris will come out blazing, then after a few turnovers will revert to a safer game plan. I have always felt (with my limited knowledge of football) that any system will work with superior personnel, and if you don't have the personnel, taking chances is likely to backfire.

However, Cut managed to do it for at least a while, so if he can coach up the players he's got, and coach them to execute well, they should be smart enough to handle a little more variety of play calling.

so ben frye is now a defensive end as i said in previous post. i didnt mention everyone talked about but also mentioned were DT's aeneas peebles 6'2'' 285lb and christian rorie 6'6'' 305 lb. another DE mentioned was caleb oppan 6'4'' 240 lbs. i think we will be okay on the dline this year. if you go to 247 and read all the player interviews this year one thing that seems to be a theme that keeps getting mentioned by all the players is what a better and fresher attitude everyone has this year. i know people have been upset by a few of the transfers but i think that they were burnouts who affected the other kids. drew, derrick and marquis were ready for a change and it seems like we got addition thru subtraction. i appreciate all the time and effort they put into our program and wish them a really good year at their new schools.

Liftee, that assumes, of course, that there will be variety in play-calling. There has not been any for years. We are the most predictable offense in the ACC, if not everywhere. Agreed, Hart?

Look at Surf, being all upbeat and everything! I hope you are right about the DL. Nothing would make me happier. Well, maybe a strong OL too. Am I asking for too much?

Totally agree DI. Opposing defenses seem to totally have us figured out: pretty much stack the line for the run, and be prepared to fan out to either boundary for a dink-doink passing attack. Don't worry about Duke trying any Vertical down the middle of the field pass routes.

Obviously over the past two years the few vertical pass routes we've tried have had little success. If there's an improvement in that area, who knows? Perhaps, and thats a hesitant perhaps if downfield passing improves,we could win 6 game? Praying!!! OFC

so on goduke.com we have an injury update. 3 players had surgery and the one that stings is gary smith DT had his knee scoped. hopefully not a season ender but probably out 6 to 12 weeks. that hurts to lose a starter for a good amount of time. they are looking at ron carr OT on the dline. interesting and not a bad move i think. i still think wrotten C/OG should move to DT.
the other big news which i love is that monk is back inside at OG per his interview on 247. evidently john gelotte has taken an OT spot which is what i was hoping for.

Bad news indeed @surfdevil!! Losing a player w/Gary Smith's SIZE at DT is a bummer-

Next man up, lets go Duke!

I don't think we'll learn much from an intrasquad scrimmage. Does it mean the OL is ahead of the DL, without Gary Smith? Maybe, but how does that compare to the outside world?

Still hoping for the best.

plus Moore was going against the 2nd and 3rd string d. per a ben albert tweet after practice #7 he said that Franklin the ND transfer DT was the defensive stud of the day. boy if he can get fully recovered and in game shape from last years covid bout that will really help up front.

Well, you know what? We lost out entire starting defensive line, and they were porous to say the least. These FACTS together with the intra-squad scrimmage suggest to me that we may have big problems this year. I was hoping that the scrimmage would provide some little glimmer of hope things were going to get better. You are right, the scrimmage by itself does not PROVE anything; but when considered along with the other FACTS, it surely is not a good sign. What I am looking for is FACTS suggesting that our young defensive line will be able to stop somebody. The only facts that we have so far are the scrimmage. I hope the kids we have now turn out to be better than the ones they are replacing...a lot better. HOPE SPRINGS ETERNAL.

Still I do not think you should throw cold water on Moore's performance. Naturally he wasnt going against our 1st string d. I dont care what you say, that kid reeks potential and a huge upside. Wisconsin recruited Jordan, as did Wake- and Wake has handled us pretty well lately. Also an EXTREMELY BRIGHT youngster. I can see some Mike Dunn in this kid. OFC

Additional info on Jordan Moore who dazzled at qb in Saturday nite's scrimmage. Kid has an excellent upside:

Only question Moore faces with his obvious potential is, Can this CURRENT STAFF develop him further??? OFC

so when did i say moore stunk? jesus people have become touchy here. i simply pointed out that he wasnt going against first stringers. riley leonard our other true frosh qb (who did not have the benefit of early enrollment) also had a very good scrimmage and showed a bigger arm and ''plus'' mobility. i think our qb situation of the future is just fine.
other notes from the scrimmage
durant, coleman and true frosh trent davis all looked good running the ball
zamari ellis and michael reese both had sacks
our starting oline was barton lt, mcintyre rg, wohlabaugh c, monk lg, gelotte rt. holman was first in at lg, kade parmelly at rg and carson van lynn is really pushing for the rt job.
sayyid stevens also impressed at lb

also just to answer a question from above, normally the defense is way ahead of the offense early in practice. we have a different situation than most because we lost our top 5 dline guys and our oline guys have many years together.

surf you didnt say Jordan Moore "stunk." I acknowledged yesterday I knew he wasnt going against our first string D. However I think you're WAY TOO SMART not to acknowledge Moore's potential. He certainly received notable mention in the post scrimmage presser. I am "touchy." We've "stunk" the last two years.

as i keep saying i think both moore and leonard have high potential. riley is a strong armed ''traditional'' qb with good athletism. i would like to see moore as our ''connette'' package guy now because once he gets past the line of scrimmage he is hard to lay a hand on. burn his red shirt and do it this year. the odds of both he and leonard staying together for four years are slim. one will transfer out.

FYI crystal balls are flowing in to us for nathan vail a 6'2'' db with 9 P5 offers. would be a great get this weekend

I will be shocked but THRILLED OBVIOUSLY if we not only get Vail, but manage to KEEP HIM! As for Moore and Leonard both staying 4 years- no way- agree both are TOO TALENTED to co-exist for their entire tenure. I think Moore has a chance to at least move to the back-up role this year. Diamont better come to play! OFC

bang bang
jake taylor a 6'5'' 220 lb te from cardinal gibbons commits
i know nothing about him and am just talking out of the side of my mouth here.
really good size and from a good school.
he made the ncpreps.com preseason all state team for te
per his twitter account
4.56 40
4.25 shuttle
10'1'' broad jump
34'' vertical
played football, basketball and lacross
we were his only P5 offer. is he another noah grey?

So per his highlight film this kid is very athletic and loves to block. I think a good find and another in-state recruit.

I hope we get lucky on this one because no one but smaller schools had offered him. Just hoping we are not giving away a scholarship again. OFC
Exactly. You can either look at bright side of Cut's recruiting (diamonds in rough) or more reality of late (the other P5's showed no interest, and Duke gets leftovers).I also look at player development from our staff, which I think is sorely lacking.Again sorry to be so brutally honest. OFC

Also NO EXCUSES this year for Duke from Covid standpoint. It was same for all last year, yet Cut even has his players brainwashed enough in interviews to BLAME COVID for lack of preparation. OFC

Aren't Taylor's numbers decent? 4.56 40? Not NFL or five star quality but not terrible.

In years past, Cut and staff would "coach up" a guy like this. Let's see if they still have it in them.

Or, he starts getting high DI offers and decommits.

Not too worried yet about him getting high D1 offers. Duke's is his only one so far. Can't remember Cut "coaching up" an unrated no star player, who became a starter. Does not mean he has not done it, just that nobody sticks out to me as being in that category. OFC

Hart, unfortunately, Facts are facts. Cannot really sugar-coat it. Derrick Tangelo proves your point. Penn State had to get him into shape after he arrived there. OFC
DI exactly.....I remember reading about it. Embarrassing for our program. OFC.

Line vs Charlotte has dropped another half point, to 6.5 Duke fave. Charlotte building 'mo for 1ST ACC HOME GAME....You can get tix at Duke for $9 a game this year. $54 each for Duke vs Niners in Charlotte and I am sure they will likely sell out! OFC

Anything less than a 3 TD win will not portend well for the rest of the season. The fact that Cut's boasting has decreased from previous years is not a good sign. OFC
