One thing sure, we won't be believing anything optimistic coming from the coaches until we see improvement on the field. That's what happens when you win so few games. I am ready and willing to become a believer when Duke wins an ACC game or two.

DI this is true. Hes definitely a milder, gentler Cut this year.I think maybe hes finally learned to curb the sunshine pumping! OFC
I read elsewhere that one of our OC's, Faris, said that Cut will be calling most of the plays. If that was an accurate quote, here we go again. OFC
in cuts press conference today he pointed out that of gunnars 8 passes in the scrimmage that the receivers dropped 3 so that he was really 6 for 8. better for gunnar but once again wr problems. also said gelotte is really playing well at the ot spot. he also likes what ron carr is doing on the dline. said he is rotating between de and dt. looks like the move is permanent.
Promising news about the trenches, but too bad about those dang drops. Although understandably less highlighted than our miserable turnover rate, dropped passes by Duke is a problem that dates back to Daniel Jones era. OFC
Again I hate to sound like a broken record, but apparently we're lacking staff development(veteran receivers coach Trooper Taylor was hired, and supposed to light a fire under our wides). Now hes been moved to db's coach, where he has no experience, and Cut shuffled someone else to coach receivers w/no experience(oh yeah, Boyette, our ex RB's coach).SMH.
Its really a simple formula: you either coach the 3 stars up (like at Wake for instance) or you're in for long seasons at the P5 level. @surfdevil thanks for the info, and lets hope we get this straightened out.
I will close w/this: if you're a school like Duke, where recruiting has obviously fallen off in recent years,you better have smart, motivated position coaches to get the most out of mediocre talent. It was Cut's demise at Ole Miss, because he refused to sweep out his staff.Admin told him "there's the door." The SAME PROBLEM may send him packing this year if we post another sorry record. I hope all serious Duke football fans (like us diehards here) will flood social media, and write new AD Nina King if we lose to Charlotte in hopes WE DO NOT bring Cut back for his final year on contract, in '22. Liftee I think you're at least partially right. There's no doubt about tremendous Duke football apathy. As the late and great Atlanta Braves broadcaster Ernie Johnson Sr said: "You can have all the promotions in the world, but the BEST PROMOTION is WINNING.!!"
Lift, if we were a consistent top tier Coastal team playing a more attractive non conference home schedule, interest would pick up. It certainly peaked in '13! If that were case, I DO NOT think the realignment discussion would be an issue. OFC
We're certainly still putting $$ into football this year. After last year's disaster, I just read Duke decided to purchase Cut his requested tower this season to watch practice. So the little child has a new toy. We'll wait and see if it helps. Spurrier shined here without any of that crap....OFC

Well its funny Lift, when my late father took me to games in the McGee era (which was just fair to mediocre football) we drew decent crowds. We brought in good teams to play like Pitt w/Tony Dorsett, and regional foes that had good fanbases like South Carolina and ECU. Cut made sure Kevin White scheduled "down" considerably, and fans just don't care as much.
Yes coaching up these kids, bringing in a new staff and ACTUALLY winning and making trips BEYOND MOTOR CITY, INDEPENDENCE BOWLS, ETC could work wonders! OFC
I was at Duke during the McGee era. I think you're right, in those days most students (not all) went to games. I attended the Dorsett game and remember that it was more Pitt fans than Duke fans (of course they were 1st in the nation).
I would actually settle for trips to minor bowls on a continuing basis as long as we are competitive in the ACC. Being noncompetitive in the ACC and giving up 50+ points routinely to me is embarrassing and intolerable.

BINGO on most everything you said. On the bowls I think we need to maybe make at least mid-tier bowls to sustain interest. Certainly the Belk Bowl was a springboard for us in 2012, even though we lost the game. OFC

Good news! I don't want a short leash on our qbs, but I feel theres more depth at the position this year. Hope Cut won't wait TOO LONG to make a change if Gunnar doesn't produce.

Surf you've even got me, Mr. Pessimist excited! Faris has said hes opening up the playbook as OC- sure hope so. Would love to get Jordan Moore some game reps in Connette role! OFC
If the OL can allow the offense to move the ball on the ground, the DL will get rest and look a lot better as a result. We may not know until 9/18 though.

our latest TE commit was in the nc game of the week friday night. 2 time state champion chambers (formally vance) and ranked in the top 30 in the nation came to cardinal gibbons (#5 in state) and won a thriller. cardinal gibbons actually recovered a late on-side kick and was driving to win until a late interception ended the game. a friend of mine was at the game and said jake taylor had several receptions plus threw several pancake blocks. we might have a winner here guys.

Been saying for a long time that you could build a decent team out of Charlotte metro kids and Raleigh kids that fly under the radar. James Pearce is another one from Chambers. He's steadily climbed the rankings. Not a 4-star, but someone's going to get a good one there.

I'm glad the Surratt's didn't come to Duke. The one that bothered me was Donavon Green who changed his mind and is at Wake. Good news today I heard WSJS 101.5 in the triad will cover Duke football and basketball games.
I agree and these players that play at schools like cardinal gibbons will be disciplined on and off the field.
Saw Sonny play for my beloved Redskins in person at DC Stadium on several occasions. His training habits (or lack thereof) did not impede his unrivaled skill at QB. He brought excitement to every game he played in. He needs to be cloned. OFC
