Who here is going to the Military Bowl? I haven't bought my tickets yet but if the weather is not terrible I'm making the trip. It's the least I can do for this team.

I'll be there -- I visit my family in Maryland around Christmastime every year so it winds up being less than an hour to drive and cover the game (did so when WF played in it in 2016; ironically the first time ever talking to Elko).

Obviously there are a large number of great seats still available. Looks like the teams have whole sections of the stadium and the rest are not selling much. I suspect you can check the weather the day before and still get great seats.

okay a nice get by the staff
Ben Hoitink a PWO from penn
6'4'' 312lbs IOL
started 20 games for penn
turned down a full scholly by cincy and was also offered pwo by ucla and wisconson
to get this sized and experienced a kid and not have to give him a scholly is just crazy good

So he has to pay his own way as a PWO, or is that just waiting until a scholarship opens up? It seems that he will play considering his size and experience.

FYI we also got another PWO today from Cooper Cookson, a 2023 lb from oklahoma.
as a pwo they are technically on the roster but not on scholly. they play, practice and eat with the team plus they can dress for home games (i think). a school can have up to 120 players on the roster but only 85 can be on scholly. think Rudy. remember we had 32 kids walk this year but only 23 of those were scholly kids. the other 9 were pwo kids.

coach Elko had a discussion about the bowl prep and mentioned how good this has been for the players
wesley williams de said he has really added mass and will be a factor next year.
jeremiah hasley lb has really been good
henry belin qb is getting more and more reps
brian parker and brian maycraft ol are also getting better
this is why making a bowl game is so huge. the 15 extra practices are just big for the young kids development.

Picked up a class of '23 verbal wideout speedster yesterday from Texas I am told?? Hes grandson I understand of Dallas all time great DL Bob Lilly!!! MORE DETAILS GREATLY APPRECIATED- also hear we scooped up another OL!!!

Conor, I get the feeling that most big name schools do run players off the team. Clearly Clawson and Elko won't do that.

I mean ... as it stands, Duke is going to be in the situation where they're greyshirting or running guys off to make room. That's the harsh reality of having so many of the upperclassmen say essentially what DeWayne Carter did yesterday (stories coming later), that this season was so much fun that he didn't want to leave yet.

I don't think it comes to that, with the exception of a couple of guys, because I think you'll see more than 3 just the players who've already entered the portal leave by the end of the portal windows.

I probably should've taken more time with this story but wanted to get it out there before signing day. Another part of the equation both schools share is that their degrees are immensely valuable. So some players who aren't contributors wind up sticking around for a season or two longer to finish degrees. I hate using that as an excuse because each coach will also sing praises of how strong their schools' academic reputations are, and how that benefits them in recruiting -- but it is, in some ways, a handicap.

I attended Duke with a guy who had a basketball scholarship but just wasn't good enough to play (in those days there was a freshman team and he played on that team but clearly wasn't good enough for the varsity). He became a student assistant or something and I bet he was given a different kind of scholarship to preserve the number available for players who could play. I wonder if that is what Duke and Wake will do now with the FB players who have little or no chance of getting on the field.

By 8:10 a.m., 25 of Duke's 26 expected signees are in. Just waiting on Moussa Kane.

I'll be in Durham later today for an Elko presser and will have at least one story up later on the full scope of Duke's class.

So Conor try to find out why Mandela Tobin is no longer on the team. Really disappointed with this turn of events. I thought he was going to be good.

I'll see what I can find out.

Moussa Kane was in at 8:32 a.m., so Duke goes 26-for-26 in expected signs today. Don't think they're getting any surprise flips or announcements for the rest of the day ... but I also thought last night's basketball game was a good matchup for them, so I'm clearly an idiot (haha).

Don't forget they were missing two starters last night. Still a good win for wake
I don't think we win with Lively and Whitehead anyway. There was far too much indifference from our team last nite. Very disappointed with the lack of effort. (Except Blakes). No excuses. So glad today was Signing Day to take some of the stink off last nite.
Looking forward to Bowl Game!!

One more to add:

DE Desmond Aladuge will be here in the spring.

Also: Elko said in the presser just now that he thinks you'll see more entries to the portal in January, and you'll see more in the spring after players go through spring ball and graduate.

That's a nice group of youngsters to have available for spring ball!!! Thanks Conor!

Hart going out on a limb!

Have there been any injury updates on Plumlee? Should we assume that he is fully healthy?

Looks like the weather will be reasonably mild, 40-45 degrees, nothing like Pitt. I doubt it will be a factor.

I do hope the defensive linemen have been doing their running. They will be chasing Plumlee the whole afternoon. I bet Shaka Heyward will be shadowing him also.

Can't wait!

Preview for tomorrow's game.

Programming note: Just a reminder that I'll be there tomorrow with full coverage.

Apologies on the tardiness of the preview; meant to have that done this morning. Been a wild day on the Wake Forest side of things -- as some shameless bragging, I had on the WF board on the morning of their bowl game four days ago that Hartman would be transferring and ND as the destination.

A nugget to pass along that I'll try to get locked down in pre-game tomorrow: Shaka Heyward had a surgery after the regular-season finale and has been day-to-day.

Excellent post Conor- I look forward to the preview. Congrats on the Hartman scoop- heck I would brag too, I mean that's a helluva story to break!!!!

Shaka's absence would be sorely felt today, but Elko NEVER offers excuses, and is huge on "Next man up." We have to at least SLOW DOWN their powerful running game, and play the same smart football we have all season: hopefully NO TURNOVERS!!!
Let's go Duke!!

Conor, here's couple for you:

Has any Duke first year football coach EVER:

A/Won a Bowl game?
(First year HC Fred Goldsmith went to now defunct Hall of Fame Bowl in '94, but lost to Wisconsin).

B/Won NINE games?
(Goldsmith Won EIGHT in '94).

Maybe some history on line today???

Thanks, OFC
