I don't know the rules about college players leaving early, but what makes us sure Riley will stay 2 more years? Depends on what scouts tell him next year about his draft status I would think.
Sorry to see this board sink into the same sickness as the basketball board, unnecessarily speculating and guessing about the possibility of a player leaving. Adds absolutely nothing to the discussion other than infusing some negativity. OFC

I understand, and your scenario could happen. I don't think so, but it could. OFC

Just as I told Lift, I understand his scenario. It COULD occur, but I don't foresee it. I think Lift was just thinking out loud.

DI, given the speculation rampant on the basketball board I understand your reaction as well. I look forward to both of you posting here!! Go Duke!

DI, sorry if my comments came across as negative, that wasn’t my intent. But we know that there will likely be some transfers, as we’re oversubscribed scholarship-wise for next year, and i was just speculating on a couple of guys who seemed like they could be among the transfers. As I said, i hope they’re not! Certainly no insider info that i was basing that upon.

No problem. I just do not like to see such speculation on this board. It casts the players in a negative light without a shred of evidence. Posters, of course, have an absolute right to do that. I just want this board to stay squeaky positive, unless there is an unquestionable reason not to.

A case in point of valid criticism was our coach in his ladder years when he became "SENILE," and refused to change his ways. Sure am glad Coach Elko is here with freshness, new ideas and such passion for winning! Glad the talk for a Cutcliffe statue has been silenced.... OFC

Technically yes, because they had eligibility left and it's not going to be spent at Duke.

I don't think I counted Stevens when I counted scholarships a few weeks ago, think I *did* count Smith.

Just so I understand, when these young men enter the portal, does it open up 2 scholarships?
yes and no. these kids are among the 22 who walked so their schollys were already figured to be going to one of the 26 new signees. we are still 4-5 schollys over the limit so we are going to have to have some kids who didnt walk leave or get their schollys yanked

I feel like we'll have the 4-5 leave voluntarily surf for various reasons. What's the window for when the portal closes?? OFC

So things will remain fluid for a while.

The pickups at linebacker, defensive backfield and offensive line last year were critical. I'd love to see some similar experienced talent come in this year. I'm sure Duke will be even a bigger draw this year!

Happy New Year everyone.

There are two windows in which players can enter: The current one lasts until Jan. 18, and then the spring one is from May 1-15.

Looking ahead to the spring, that's going to be hectic; since there's not a universal time for teams to conduct spring practices, you'll have some teams start spring ball in late February and they'll have some departures after the first week or two, but those kids will have to wait until May 1 to enter. And then you'll have other situations where a team's spring game is late April, and they'll lose players within a couple of days of their spring game. It's going to be a wide scope of when players announce they're transferring compacted into a short window of actually entering.

Wow that portal will jam up like rush hour traffic in NYC....

Kind of small note to pass along, but a note regardless:

Eric Weatherly has been moved to receiver; was a RB this past season (change occurred sometime late in the season).

He's 5-7, 171, so I'm interested to see how he fits at receiver if he moves up the depth chart. Obviously Duke's backfield was (still is) pretty crowded, so his avenue to playing time looks clearer at a position that plays 3-4 at a time, and rotates anywhere from 5-7 into each game.

Remember him from the spring game I think. Great speed. OFC

Not to go off topic, but Duke football got a BIG shot in the arm yesterday from Duke alum Daniel Jones, who seems to be the talk of the NFL right now. Considering that high school BBall players love to look at the success of Duke players in the NBA, seeing Daniel stand out has to help football recruiting. We're proud of you Daniel!

It's nice to have a shiny record against bad competition, like we did some years with Coach Cut, but if we want to be taken seriously across the country, we have to compete with the Big Boys.

If those teams that SWe and Devilinside just mentioned are mostly ranked 20-35 in the country, why shouldn't we compete with them?

4 or 5 of them will be ranked higher than 20 - 35, a lot higher. Like ND, FSU, UNCheat, Pitt, Clempsum (could not help myself on that one). Should not be ranked higher until we prove ourselves against them. OFC

addison penn ol to the portal. this is the first one who didnt walk. He was a good prospect who never was able to break into the upper line up. Also was unfortunately one of the people who got COVID and had real issues. Took a while to recover. Wish him well.

Trey Brown III into the portal. DE who spent two years at Duke; played in one game (UVA) this season, according to PFF.

so far 2 guys who did not walk have entered the portal so we are closer to getting to the 85 scholly number. still need 3-4 to declare for the portal. there is supposedly a big fish transfer coming in but still no idea who it is on my end.

I want to wish John a complete recovery. I am sure he has endured significant mental and physical trauma with such an injury.

Yeah she was responding to several posters comments on her son being a disappointment and that he never developed. Well as she pointed out we just don't know what kind of things are going on behind the scenes. John was in the two deep for 2 years and then disappeared. Well some comments were made on the other board that were strong enough to make her come out and tell us about his spinal injury. Duke does not and should not release injury info so we are in the dark on these kids. I have been guilty of this before myself. Now after learning of Carrs, Wrotens and Gelottes injuries I think I will now keep all development comments to myself. These kids picked Duke and gave us their all so thank you to the kids.
