duke football news

I'd like to think that Elko will have lots of good candidates to choose from, and it sounds like he's got his man already.

So just a little info.
We had 5 s&c coaches last year and are down 2 right now so look for some hires.
Also for Cut bashers Matt Guerrieri has been named DC at Tulsa and Greg Frye as tight ends coach. Cut missed on a lot of his grad assistant hires but not on all of them.

conor i dont know how to do it but maybe you can get one of the guys tweets who were here this weekend on this thread. the picture where they are sitting in a duke blue throne with the devils pitchfork. these are fantastic. man they have upgraded every aspect of the program.
so lets use 3.5 as the number and ask more or less 4 star kids commit in 2024? i go more

so Landan Callahan is the commit
from pfafftown nc
6' 165lb athlete
coaches saw him when they were recruiting semaj turner at same school last year and got on him early
offers from P5 schools duke, louisville, nc state, unc, wake and wva
offers from top level G5 schools like app, coastal, marshall ecu, jmu and charlotte
basically every team in the area so i expect rivals to do their normal 5.4 2 star when they rate him because he chose duke

Well good for those guys but I will ALWAYS be a "Cut basher." I commend the man for ressurecting the program in his fifth year, and giving us 3-4 good years.

However, Cut became stubborn, refused to change his out of date offense, recruiting suffered, player development lagged, and his good hires were few and far between. The man became enamored with his own pedigree of coaching the Mannings and Daniel Jones.

Next to the hiring of Mike Elko the best day for Duke football was the hiring of AD Nina King, and the resignation of her predecessor, Kevin White.

OFC

did recruiting really suffer? despite the sometimes ridiculous rankings on this site (sorry conor) Elko came in and went 9-4 with basically cut's kids. now i completely agree that the coaching level went way down the last 5 years or so. dont think that can really be debated. i also agree that cut had a hubris issue.

I know we are going over the same issue we have many times before, but my concern the past 4 years (before this wonderful season) was that we continued to recruit about as well as BC, Virginia, Wake and Pitt, but were getting blown out by them, indicating very poor preparation and player development.

I will give you that one surf, recruiting was decent. However w/o some of the folks Elko garnered thru the portal (Darius Joiner comes to mind), 9-4 doesn't happen IMO. OFC

so it seems word has leaked that it is Hauss Hejny, QB from texas.
6' 187lbs at duke camp last week. earned an offer after blowing away the staff
look at his vids and his athletic ability jumps off the page
led aledo to state championship. he was named texas distric 3-5a-1 overall mvp
THE SHOCKING THING IS THIS WAS HIS FIRST YEAR PLAYING QB

well the comp most people are using is drew brees but more athletic so....
i hope it really is him. have not seen an ''official'' confirmation yet.
guess his dad played qb at washington st 25 years ago
he was supposed to be at baylor this weekend but cancelled that trip so that helps in thinking it is him.
fyi 247 is the only rating so far but they gave him an 87 so upper 3 star. they said the only thing keeping him that low was his height. 3'' taller and he is a 4 star.
evidently his high shool had another qb who went D1 last year so he was at wr till that kid graduated.
okay now official.

Joiner was clearly critical. Other key transfers were Cam Dillon, Datrone young, Ja’Mion Franklin, Andre Harris and Chance Lytle (our O-line particularly needed help). If the incoming transfers are as helpful as this group, we’ll be pretty darned happy.

No argument here although Franklin was a cut transfer and here earlier. But you are still talking 17 or 18 of the starters being cut guys and almost all of the 2 deep. It took Elko to redesign the offense and defense to be as good as it was along with GOOD coaching.

Holy Mackerel!!!!! OFC

just a little more on Hauss
his high school plays big time football in texas. have won 9 out of last 10 state titles in their class.
he also runs a 10.68 in the 100 meter on track team.
watch his huddle tape. wow he pops. quick release, strong arm, good placement and runs really really fast.
in his interview on 247 he said that Johns really wanted him and that made Duke the place he wanted
also is already recruiting a couple of other targets in texas for us.

Coach Elko is on a serious roll. What wide reciever would not want to play with this kid? Add this to the news about our new DC and new transfers. And it is only going to get better. OFC

You’re right, Surf, I stand corrected about Franklin!

Jaylen Coleman won the NCHSAA 4-A state championship with a 10.83 100-meters. So, 10.68 is pretty darn impressive.

i like this pick up. good size for DE and another kid who was at Duke last weekend and impressed the coaches. had an offer from ole miss and tulane plus was going to camp at stanford next week but has now cancelled that trip.
another kid with an 87 high 3 star from 247 and 85.5 so solid 3 star from on3
has Duke ever had this many commits in january?

We succeeded against a mediocre schedule, just like Cut did a couple times.

I think Coach Elko is going to have us ready to compete with the big boys next year and beyond, which will make us even more attractive to higher ranked recruits. Maybe even put more bodies in seats in Wallace Wade.

Duke FB and Coach Elko have a tough schedule next year, agreed! What gives me hope is the success from this year obviously. Majority of the core players stayed. There's a year of Elko's coaching them and laying the foundation. Everything is seemingly lined up for them to be successful. They just have to work hard in the offseason and go execute during the season. I'm excited to see how they match up. I trust they will be fully prepared!

I think we all sense that Coach Elko is a very special guy and coach. The players love him to death. And the fact that the DC at Texas A & M wanted to, and did, join him here speaks volumes about how much Elko is respected and Liked. One week to find an absolutely top-notch DC is amazing to me. Duke football is in good hands. Drink up, Hombres! OFC

Cheers to yourself DI, and all Duke FB fanatics here!!! Yes, Elko always has a plan!!! OFC

Well this should be fun to watch. The dogs are coming after Hunter Hejny. Both Cal and TCU offered him this week. I am worried about TCU because it is 20 minutes from home and both parents spent time there. He is headed there this weekend on a recruiting trip so ugh

Surf, we understand that you cannot always give us good news. We can take a little bad news every now and then. I think we will Survive Hejny visit to TCU.
