duke football news

I just got an email from Devil's Den (I'm not a member but this one came for free) that had some quotes from Elko. He said everyone is healthy, no mention of Shaka at all. Perhaps whatever the surgery was, it was minor. It seems strange to me that if he played the last game of the season, and I don't remember him being hurt, that he'd have elective surgery that would keep him out of a bowl game. At least that's what I'm hoping.

Also, strange that there's no mention at all in Conor's report as to what part of the body it was. Hopefully Conor will get more information but one way or another, we'll know in a few hours.

Go Duke! Hart, Surf, Devilinside and Jeffrey, you guys got your game faces on yet?

Lift I am ready to suit up and cheer from the sidelines!!!!! Given the opportunity this old fart would do it! Go Duke!!! OFC

Shaka had his tonsils removed since the end of the season. Wasn't going to roll with that until given official word.

He's not injured; just unavailable to play in the game.

I always feel like Elko and staff are well prepared. If some plays don't work it's because of lack of execution not because they don't know what they're doing.

UCF did that trick play with Plumlee and came back with something similar but Duke was ready. Well coached, smart players.

That kid from Columbia who took Shaka's place played great. I like this Ivy to Duke pipeline. Kids that either matured into good FB players and want to play at a higher level, or kids that went for education first and now want a grad year of playing high level FB. It's working well for us.

Hart will hate me for saying this, but Cut recruited some good players, he just stopped coaching them up. There was a lot of real talent and athleticism on the Duke side today.

I am very proud to be a Duke fan.

No Lift I agree about Cut, he did bring in some definite talent. He simply didn't have the staff to properly develop them, and his playbook was stale as week old bread.

I am so happy for the guys who stayed with the program and got to taste success, the freshmen who honored their commitment to Duke even when a new coach was hired, the transfers who could have gone to a lot of other schools that had programs that were already successful and not only were on the team, but played big roles this year, and of course Coach Elko and his staff who bravely predicted we were going to be successful right out of the box. I feel confident that sustained success is ahead for us - hopefully the Board of Trustees feels the same way and shows their support for Coach Elko and his staff.

I AM A DUKE FAN. Whatever the sport and of course I'm more familiar with football, basketball and baseball for the simple reason I am an old fart and those sports are what I grew up with. I cannot tell you every sport that Duke participates in. I know we have a pretty good women's basketball team which we don't recognize and give enough credit too. I know we have an outstanding Lacrosse program but just because I can't name our athletes from other sports doesn't mean I don't pull for them. If Duke ever had a women's wrestling team I would
be a fan. That is about as stupid when certain fans of other schools tell me that how could I be a Duke fan and refer to them as we when I never attended Duke. Most cheater u fans never went there either. I must add however that because of the success of Coach K we gained a lot of basketball fans that may pull for other programs in other sports. That's ok with me. Just happy they are Duke basketball fans but I have a special place in my heart for the pure Duke all sports fans who have always pulled for Duke through thick and thin. You are special. Sorry for the deepsouther post. Sometimes it takes a few lines for me to get my point across. OFC

This. I remember sitting in Wallace Wade as a little kid and being inconsolable because of how bad we were (90s and 2000s). When I read about the Iron Dukes and Coach Wade and Murray I thought why did it have to go away? Administrators in the late 60s and 70s is the obvious answer but it was so gratifying when Coach Cut brought back a sense of pride to the program and we had respectability again. I will always be grateful to him for that and I hated how the last few years went but it happened to Bobby Bowden and others too. Not everyone can be Tom Osborne and step away at precisely the perfect time...

Coach Elko has not only provided respectability again but expectations for the program I could only dream of as a kid suffering in the stands as we got destroyed yet again...

It's a good time to be a Duke fan. In many sports.

I enjoyed watching this team more than any I can remember. The kicker coming through before halftime and all of teammates around him says it all. They were a team put together and coached by a good staff.
Yes, that kick epitomized the game and, indeed, the season, reaching heights most of them never thought they’d achieve.

All of you, are to be commended for your heartfelt and emotional posts. Yesterday was special: Duke won and The Cheaters LOST.

Sure they beat us (refs stole it), and they won the COASTAL. However, karma struck in an unusual way: Duke won its bowl game, UNC lost its bowl game AND Duke finished with the better overall record: 9-4 to 9-5. Chew on it Mack!!! OFC

Unlike Cut's teams, this team is versatile. Does not run the same predictable stuff over and over. This team always has a plan B. When something does not work, seems to have stuff that will.

I would not change a thing about this year. They didn't let adversity bother them and that is a great lesson to learn.

Two things. First, I saw that after Jordan Moore couldn't handle that end zone catch, Elko really went after him and Moore looked like he was trying to get away from him. Then, at the end of the game, Elko walked right by Moore and the two didn't exchange any words. I don't know Elko's style but I hope he sits Moore down and talks to him. Moore has a lot of potential and I'd hate to lose him.

Second, why wasn't that double hit on Riley when he slid in the 4th quarter called? What's the point of sliding if the defense can fall on you? I mean two guys did it. There were a few other times that UCF players hit late, or out of bounds. I guess they were frustrated.

Very valid points Lift.Quite honestly I thought Jordan held on long enough, and it was a Duke touchdown. I thought the ground caused the drop, and Jordan had made a "football move" after the catch. The commentator even stated when viewing the replay, "they need to take a look at that, that's a touchdown." Then when they came back from the break, he reversed his opinion.

Yes, you're correct. Elko was ripping Jordan a new one. Two things here:

1/I cherish Elko's mean streak as it's a big reason we won 9 games. Cut had lost that fire!!

2/ Did Coach possibly go overboard on Jordan? Honestly perhaps he was a little too tough on him. That was a slant route in a tight window at the back of the end zone near the goal post. Not an easy route/catch.

Anyway, kudos to both. We have a great coach, and a very versatile converted qb at wideout.Hope they have made amends, I love 'em both! OFC

I think Jordan Moore's transition was one of the many great stories of the year. Could be that the training he gets will get him into the NFL some day. Of course, I don't know what his measurables are but he did a great job this year.

Elko must be shaking his head at how fortunate he was to start with a QB competition and end with an elite QB and starting receiver.

I think Jordan Moore is a potential transfer candidate. He didn’t seem to be as large a part of the offense as I expected, and he’s going to be fighting for time next year against a very good group of returning receivers, plus some incoming freshmen. I hope I’m wrong, but that’s my gut. I also think Henry Belin is a potential transfer - barring injury to Riley, Henry is a backup for the next 2 years. BTW, I thought Jordan’s catch in the end zone was good as well.

I don't know the rules about college players leaving early, but what makes us sure Riley will stay 2 more years? Depends on what scouts tell him next year about his draft status I would think.

True, good point Liftee, there’s no guaranty he’d stay for the full 4 years, especially if he has the kind of year next year that he seems capable of. But would Henry Belin, sitting here today, want to count on Riley leaving after next year? And Grayson Loftis is pretty highly regarded and enrolling in January, which adds to the competitive mix. Perhaps Henry, like others, waits until Spring practice is over to make a decision.

andre harris declares for nfl draft. doesnt free up a scholly because he was one of the kids who walked but i wish him well. he transferred in and gave us a great year.
Surf, you touched upon something that hasn’t really gotten enough recognition. None of our transfers in were guys who would have caused a blip on the transfer watch for ESPN or any of the other major coverages. I mean, who gets excited if a kid from Cornell, Columbia, Harvard, Arkansas St, Western Illinois or UMass transfers? Except for Chance Lytle and Datrone Young, none of our transfers this year came from big time programs, and Chance had all of 4 career starts at Colorado while Datrone had 25 at Iowa state. Yet these guys were all key to our success this year. Hats off to Coach Elko and his staff for spotting big value talent - if his HS recruiting is as perceptive, our incoming HS class could be vastly underrated.
