duke football news

Scotty may do well. He coached receivers with the Pittsburgh Steelers(his natural position of course) before coming to Duke. I think he's probably much better suited to being a position coach than a HC based on his disaster at ECU. The tenure as our OC was a failure, but Scotty was a good recruiter for us. We do miss his energy in that area. Recruiting has really bottomed out like rest of program....OFC

Here is another omission by Cut which I do not understand. Thad Lewis was hired by the Tampa Bay Bucks as an offensive assistant coach. In 2018 he was an offensive assistant at UCLA. Why does his name never come up with Duke?

I only can come up with thought Cut is somewhat of a control freak about strictly employing HIS SYSTEM! Outside ideas or philosophies are STRICTLY TABOO. Perhaps he is afraid someone like Thad (bright young man who has played at pro level, been an assistant coach as you noted), would inject change. As an Duke player for Cut once told me: "Its Cut's way or the highway!"

We've talked about Duke assistants not getting hired away much these days. It reflects the state of the school's football program. No less than 7 Clemson staff members hired away this off-season! OFC

Good point, Hart. Why would another school want to hire assistants away from a program with no strengths on offense or on defense. So, what does Cut do? Plays musical chairs, re-arranging his assistants to wholly new positions, rather than trying to find competent replacements. Heck, one of the very few, if not the only, new hires left Duke to return to Tulane, of all places.

So spot-on DI!!!

so to me the most interesting thing so far is that TE zamari ellis has been moves to DE. he was getting bypassed on the depth chart by younger talent so i like this move. 6'5'' and 240 lbs last year. he has the frame and size.

Sounds like a good move. Heard Gunnar may have the early edge at starting qb..

yeah Cut held a presser today and gave some bullet points
said transfer kade parnelly is giving a lot of spirit and bringing good depth to inside ol
TE is looking good with marwede and smith back and with nicky dalmolin also there full time now this year
dewayne carter and ben frye are showing great leadership on the d side
wohlabough looks great in rehabbing. ''has reshaped his body''. the others hurt last year seem to be on a good recovery pace.
likes the athleticism that the qb's are bringing. gunnar has far and away the most experience so he will be #1 to start. luca (to me) will be our ''connette'' package guy. very athletic with not the strongest arm. he said jordan is doing well learning the playbook and of course riley wont be here till summer.

Sounds good surf. However I have been fooled before by Cut's preseason optimism:"we're faster than we've ever been," "we have more talent than any Duke team since I've been here," etc, etc. I am going to try and temper my excitement, and if Cut wins 4 be shocked, wins 6 and become bowl eligible, well keel over probably. We lost a lot of talented defensive players, the O line was a disaster (as was our qb), and I will approach year with VERY GUARDED OPTIMISM for any real change.

I still cant understand some of the coaching moves: Requann Boyette (former Duke rb and rbs coach) working with the wideouts???Trooper Taylor came here praised for his work with receivers, and he's coaching DBs now??? I have to believe what I've read: This could be Cut's last rodeo, hes trying to enhance the resumes of his staff.

Hoping for a football SERIOUS AD to succeed Kevin White in fall, who fires Cut after the '21 season, with year left on contract.I DO like the idea of Diamont getting snaps as the ''Connette package guy." OFC

I don’t think Cut will ever be fired, but an “encouraged” retirement is probably likely, unless we really turn things around.
H2C, I share your skepticism about optimistic comments in the Spring (or preseason, for that matter). I don’t remember a coach or player ever predicting doom and gloom before the season started....

Don't get your hopes up for a football serious AD. I was shocked at the makeup of the committee which will choose the AD. Mostly academicians, business people, administrators, etc. Virtually no members with any kind of serious background in college football (except for Ross Cockrell) or basketball. No football or basketball coaches.

Rich Wagoner cares about sports. They wouldn't put Cockrell on the committee for no reason. I would have been concerned if they were all Penn or Yale people but they aren't.

I'm more concerned about whether they are looking to save $$$ in which case they go cheap. That never works out.

How did we get off topic?

I suspect that we aren't going to discuss Duke football any time in the near future without discussing the future of the program. I'm not seeing starting next season with a 5 game win streak.

When I was in college, most of the lacrosse players were from Baltimore or Long Island. My nephews and their friends in North Carolina now play the game. Is North Carolina producing many college lacrosse players?

I looked up the UNC roster at goheels.com. 58 players..only four are from north Carolina. Lots from new York, Maryland and Connecticut. But lots of other states, and several from Canada. Jack Nicklaus' grandson is on the team. The Duke roster at goduke.com is almost identical with lots of prep schools. Duke also only has four players from north Carolina

INTERESTING STAT!! OFC

i grew up in the nova area just outside of dc. when my parents retired to the pinehurst area in 78 i remember the looks i got from the kids when they saw my lacrosse stick. what the hell is that? became a wall hanging thru high school and college. now my high school pinecrest has a team. times have changed but still well behind the curve.

Devils getting back at it this week in spring practice. Should have full or close to full roster (except for incoming freshmen of course) after the "pause" for Covid. Per my understanding, we will be permitted by NCAA to get all our original scheduled practice time. Guys STAY HEALTHY!!!

no updates but a thread on the other boards that i havent seen here yet

derrick tangelo grad transferred to penn state
per penn state site
his weight is down to 305. he has added 65 lbs to his power clean lift in the short time he has been there.
'' it has been a really big transition for him in the weight room, but especially those 14 running workouts we talked about'' Galt said. (his title is assistant ad, performance enhancer) also ''derrick s almost there where he needs to be''

not a good look (to me) for our training and conditioning program that a kid with that many years on our team has to be reshaped at another program. i have stated many times that i dont get the lack of conditioning/weight gain or loss by our players. as a visiting ref who went to all ACC schools to call practice games last year said ''duke is by far the smallest team in the conference''
if you look at the roster on goduke.com our players weights are generally 20-25 lbs small (peace addo being 25-30lbs over the long running but inexcusable exception)
lummie young S 6'1'' 201 lbs. a fifth year senior 20-25 lbs to small
ron carr OT 6'5'' 275 lbs. 3rd year in program and is still to light having only added 20 lbs since high school
peace addo OT 6'6'' 345 lbs. has never gotten to a good playing weight in four years
nicky dalmolin TE 6'4'' 215 lbs. really worry for this kid. i know he played WR last year but needs 20-30 lbs to be a good TE with a shot at the pros (i think this kid is that good) but can he get the proper training/good weight at duke?

All wonderful points surf. Sad points for us, but very true. There's Tangelo for instance, a solid DL at Duke, who obviously didn't get near his full upside, all because of our real lack of development per his weight/conditioning. Obviously, you cited other good examples. Sometimes I think Cut has simply checked out in the ladder stages of his career, and wonder how much he cares anymore.

A coaching change cant come soon enough, because as long as Cut is at the helm: same stale offense, unqualified position coaches, lack of conditioning/training, etc will come back to bite us. Most important thing at Duke right now is the identity of our next AD. Cut has Kevin White in his hip pocket.

Two comments: When Cut got to Duke he said he had never seen a team in the SEC in worse condition and that would change. Somewhere along the line he forgot about that comment.

Second: I asked Surf what happened last year with Rak Chambers and you said he had a conditioning issue. Was it lack of motivation on his part or failure of the coaches to get him to put in the work?

In my mind, the lack of physical development of linemen, on both sides of the line, has been our downfall as players simply don't develop over the period of 4-5 years they are at Duke.

SPRING SHOWCASE/DUKE FOOTBALL

Who else watched yesterday on the ACC Network??? Face facts, we were awful last year, Cut's put back to back losing seasons together, and we're not feeling very hopeful about the fall of '21.All Cut has done in off-season is play musical chairs with his so-so staff.

Nonetheless, I WILL SAY I SAW A GLIMMER of hope yesterday. Gunnar Holmberg has established himself as our #1 quarterback. Yesterday I thought he looked the part. He threw the ball with authority, and accuracy.
Gunnar hit Jalon Calhoun on a quick-hiiter slant route that culminated in an 80 yard touchdown. This was in the actual scrimmage. In some special situation sets, Holmberg also hit Eli Pancol on a deep ball for a score.

Holmberg has a quick release in the pocket, and with a shaky O-Line, that only helps. On the downside, most of yesterday's plays looked right out of the Cut playbook. Even though he gave up his OC duties and we will have co OC's, Cut's footprint looks to still be all over our offense. Not good.

Running game certainly didnt seem to stand out yesterday, save a nifty 50 yard TD scamper by Jordan Waters. (Youngster does have good upside). I am just concerned about our O-LINE pass protection and run blocking. Fortunately Holmberg and backup Luca Diamont can run! (Diamont ran ball quite well yesterday).

Defensively, our line seems to be in pretty good shape. Yes we lost a lot, but DE Ben Frye seemed very optimistic about new faces in the trenches. He did a post game interview.(DL DeWayne Carter should make an impact).LB should be a strength, and we have some returnees in the defensive backfield. Its good to have veteran Josh Blackwell back, following a season ending injury last year.

This Duke team has 4 non-conference games to open the season, and should be able to win 3. I see us losing at home to Northwestern. Then its conference time. While I saw some improvement yesterday, I have to remember some sobering things: We still have the same over the hill coach, staff members that no one else wants, and a playbook and defensive schemes which need to be tossed overboard.

4-5 wins possible, because I think this is at least a happier locker room without an incapable castoff transfer taking over at qb. Cut's still the biggest sucker for committing to Chase Brice a year ago.

Thanks ged, if the stars are aligned just right, we might win a couple we're not expected to. OFC
You're welcome, hart2chesson. Times have changed . My high school teammate played defensive line for Duke after going to junior college. Several friends attended Duke as regular students. They would have no chance of being accepted today. I don't think that Duke has any juco players. All of them are quite successful. I think Spurrier was the offensive coordinator. He was definitely on the staff. My friend was a starter, but he swore that Spurrier didn't know his name. It's not that I want you to win the Coastal Division, but I don't wish the Carl Franks years upon anyone.
