duke football news

Hart, are you so Angry (as I am) that you can't find the right words to describe the utter and total destruction of the Duke football program?

Among the things that make me sad about the game last evening are:

1. If Miami had wanted, they could have scored 60 point easily, probably more.
2. I was not surprised to look on my phone and see the score progressing as it did. It's exactly what we all expected.

At one point for some reason I turned on the game. I saw a very half-a**ed effort at a goal line stand where not one lineman made any effort to penetrate. They just all stood there like a walk through practice play. It told me all I needed to know.

Please, Coach Cut, do the right thing, only because I admire and respect you so much it's painful to see you fail so badly.

Cut needs to retire while he can with dignity, before he's fired. We are thankful he made Duke football relevant again, and won a Coastal title in '13. He is a good man I truly believe. However its time to man up like Barry Wilson in '93 and retire coach. Its best for you, your legacy and the Duke fanbase. OFC

Stop worrying about Cut. The entire focus should be on what is happening to our football team. This is not about him, but about what is happening to us with nothing but a depressing future for the team if Duke lets him hang around.

OFC

I have reluctantly come to the same conclusion about Cut. He brought us back to relevancy, but that appears to have been our ceiling, at which we peaked several years ago. The effort on the field has drastically dropped, and I’m not basing that on the scores. Stupid penalties stand out, but more glaring is seeing guys make half-hearted efforts to tackle or block. And technical skills are poor - when’s the last time one of our CB’s turned around to see where the ball was?
Not to make excuses, but when Cut came, he got the school to pay his assistants at a rate competitive with the other ACC powers. Now, they’re not even close. If that remains our commitment, it may be very hard to get a full staff of decent coaches to replace what we have now.

I’m very concerned there will be more unless the ship gets righted quickly. But I won’t be surprised if Cut announces his retirement after Saturday’s game. Or even before.

Obviously the way we're playing is a major factor driving verbal commits away. However I cant help but think the staff is in disarray, not following up enough on commits. Its like theres a sense Cut is about to leave, and staff is thinking more about jobs elsewhere next season. OFC

so a nice article on 247 about mandela tobin, our 6'3.5'' 270 lb verbal dt
he was at the team makasi 1st round exposure camp in san diego this weekend
per report he was dominant. it had been a year since they (247) had seen him and they remarked he had reworked his body and lost the baby fat and was now muscle. said he was one of the best dt/de end kids on the west coast. they said since he only started playing football in high school that he had barely scratched his potential. also said to expect his rating to rise significantly.

we also got a pwo kicker (who might get a scholly, to be determined)
conner wood rated #50 kicker in nation
kick offs over 70+ yds
also is a punter.
played soccer and just started football kicking in high school.
dont know if diggars our kick off specialist is coming back (sr) so a kid who can handle 2 of the 3 duties makes sense to me.

we have two OT commits (pickett and jones). no OG commits after crim backed out. one of the two (jones who at 6'4'' 250 lbs is small) could also be a TE. might actually be the spot for him
feel like we should look for one more OT and 2 OG in portal depending on who the staff knows are leaving. need a 3 deep on OL

okay now for our DL recruiting vs wants/needs for next year
dont forget this is pre-portal. better off than i thought.

DE
ahmad craig 6'5'' 250 lbs good player. if he adds 15 to 20 he would be a monster
r j oben 6'4'' 255 lbs like his potential
caleb oppan 6'4'' 235 lbs. add another 20 lbs and he will be a baller
michael reese 6'4'' 250 lbs. another good looking freshman
DT
gary smith 6'2'' 320 lbs solid kid
dewayne carter 6'3'' 300 lbs good looking kid
aeneas peebles 6'2'' 280 lbs. when he adds 20 lbs he will be a force
christian rorie 6'6'' 305 lbs. needs to get stronger but huge kid

we have two DE verbals from hall and tobin (who could also be a DT)
add transfer ja'mion franklin, a DT transfer in from ND with 3 years left of eligibility.
also when he signed, brown said the staff wanted him as a chris rumph type de/olb hybrid

wouldnt mind one DE and one more DT from the portal
my other curve ball is i still say drew jordan (sr DT) should stay and add 20-25 lbs. think he could get nfl look if he did. he is to small at 270 lbs for nfl DT and to short at 6'2'' for nfl DE

Surf, appreciate the info, but who the heck is going to coach them up? Lombardi?

surf great report! OL play must improve. Wohlabaugh's injury hurt us at C right out of the gate, then losing Taylor to injury was decisive blow. When you have a really slow qb like Brice it only exposes weak line further....Monk definite disappointment this season. OFC

FYI STUFF
so per 247 they have confirmed 15 out of our 18 verbals will be signing wednesday
OL andrew jones is uncomfirmed but is a duke legacy kid so not much worry there
DB'S placide djungu-sungu and joshua pickett are the other two unconfirmed which means they have not talked to them yet so.......

our second portal transfer get was announced
kade parmelly OG 6'3'' 308 lbs
2 year starting senior from abilene christian university
will have one year of eligibility remaining. will enroll in january
had very good games against teams like uva and miss st

interesting to see the coaches this active in the portal this early. also i am a big fan of the fact that they seem to have identified the lines as a major need.

one of the biggest problems i think cut has had is the recognition that the portal has changed football. we are a ''developmental'' program he likes to say. the problem is that players now dont have to wait around and learn the game. they can and will transfer if the grass looks greener somewhere else. i think that maybe cut saw that this year when teams like uva and va tech started and played well with multiple portal kids.
look at our oline this year. we have starting right now holman (true soph) at left tackle. he is a guard. barton (true frosh) is starting at center. he is a tackle. jacob monk (true soph) is starting right guard. our two ''first in'' subs are mcintyre (rsoph) and gelotte (rfrosh). we are so so young. thats 5 of our top 7 OL kids who played as freshmen. a developmental program means you bring in kids and spend several years teaching them up before they start. i went back and looked at the 2013 OL which i think we can all agree was our peak.
tomlison (rjr) harding (rsr) skura (rsoph) patrick (rsoph) cofield (rjr)
notice a difference? all redshirts with at lest 3 years in the program. right now we have rak (true senior) and mcintyre with that kind of experience (only mcintyre with redshirt here). hamilton is a transfer so i dont count him. the years of kids sitting on the bench for 3 or 4 years is over unless you are one of the top tier programs and the kids realize this is their nfl audition. the problem is that schools like duke cant sell the ''doorway'' to the nfl line

I recall Cut saying he was going to redshirt all lineman, which the previous coaches didn't or couldn't do. I think we got thin in the ranks again so he had to play young guys. I think the portal is a great way to rebuild the lines. Not to be snarky, but a guy who's been coached by a Big Ten team might be ahead of a guy with similar or less time in the Duke program.

yep you are right but i dont think that devalues my thought. he is still for 2 years playing out of position by need, including his rfrosh season. i hope we get 1 if not 2 more portal kids for the OL just for depth and general competition.
jim always wondered where you went to college? figure you went to duke but i had a friend named jim sumner at another university in the early 80's.

GAMEDAY THREAD.....

Well its here our final game of a nightmarish 2020. Yes, Duke's season has really mirrored the type of year America has faced with the pandemic. Also, we learned just like Covid, the Blue Devils gridiron problems do not just "magically disappear."

Oh well lets get at it, our boys from Durham travel to FSU with a chance to break their 0-19 record against the Seminoles. On paper, it represents Duke's best chance perhaps of a 2nd ACC win this season. This is not your dad's Seminole team. Like Duke they have 2 wins (although one a HUGE upset over UNC), are not strong offensively, and give up plenty of points on defense.

Duke needs to focus much of its defense on FSU qb Jordan Travis, a dynamic runner. Dimukeje and Rumph need to get in the backfield and contain the elusive Travis or it could be a long day. Travis has some decent weapons at RB, but is not a real threat throwing this year, so if Duke can cover him, we should be able to perhaps control possession time.

As mentioned Duke SHOULD be able to put up enough points to win this game. FSU does not have a defense of the type DC Mickey Andrews put on the field. Jackson and Durant have chances to run wild like they did at Syracuse. Will they??? Then theres our celebrated transfer qb from Clemson. Can Chase Brice put together a decent game, move the team and limit turnovers??? Odds say he should be able to do so. I think if Brice doesnt turn the ball over, completes enough passes to open up things for Jackson and Durant on the ground, Duke wins a tight one.

However I cant help but be pessimistic. I'll take FSU 34-24, and hope I am wrong. Its worth mentioning the game could possibly be Cut's last as Duke HC. I dont think Kevin White fires him, but could he retire? Doubtful, but one can hope. The game kicks off at 4pm on the ACC NETWORK, and the 'Noles are currently a 4pt favorite.
