duke football news

The Vikings decision not to kick the field goal was pretty bad. That put their defense in a bad spot
i will go the other way on this. if you cant stop them going 96 yards then why would the defense be able to stop them with 6 seconds less from 75 yds after a kick off? the defense gagged like dogs and gave up two fourth down plays, thats what killed them.

That's true but they would have to score and make the two point conversion just to send it to overtime. Russel Wilson is a magician in a tough situation

Well @surfdevil will probably have more on this later, but '21 prospect and 6'3" Cole Bishop (db) has de-committed from his Duke pledge. It sucks, as he appeared locked in for us.

yeah cole is saying it is because he wants to play safety and duke has him at lb but thats a crock. there have been signs ever since he committed. his twitter page has him adding and following a lot of other programs and coaches since committing so this really caught no one by surprise. the way our season started did not help either. wish him well

surf I just dont like the decomittment part. I am to the point these kids should sign a TRULY BINDING agreement. Its not fair to coaching staffs who would otherwise offer other kids schollys for the same position. OFC

I think it's been like this for years. Guys "commit" to Duke and then wait for more attractive offers. Again, it's the exact opposite of basketball, where Coach K swoops in and gets guys who have verbally committed to a lower program. We get to see both sides of the equation.

In order for a school to require kids to sign some kind of "binding contract" prior to signing day, every other school would have to do it too. That's because schools who don't require binding contracts would have a big competitive advantage in recruiting. A kid is more likely to commit to a school if he knows that he can "de-commit" if necessary before actually signing his scholarship papers. Oral "commitments" before actual signing day, are understood to be non-binding and merely expressions of present intention. The actual signing is a binding commitment which carries with it penalties if broken.

I see your point, I just feel it shows a lack of maturity on the youngster's part, and tells you a lot about the kid's character. Its like I can verbal and if I get something better, the heck with it. Sets a bad precedent and shows how spoiled he is.... OFC

Same thing happened to Duke with UNC LB Chazz Surratt. He de-commiited from Duke and opted for UNC. Cut was FURIOUS! OFC

look, decommits are just a part of the game. most teams have 2 or 3 a year. its okay. as was pointed out earlier, duke basketball goes after committed kids and steals them frequently. these are 17-18 year old kids who are dealing with new things. they are just learning to be men.
as to the binding contract thing, MEH. since the schollies are only valid for a year and schools boot underperformers all the time (see tenn) by not letting kids re-up, i am okay with the kids having some time to look around.

Look it doesnt mean I have to like it!
Plus I blame the coaches for a lot of this.....Doeren at State has poached several of our recruits in the past, the most recent being Zonovan "Bam" Knight, Wolfpack rb who we play tomorrow. Kid's having a heckuva year, and Doeren admitted "we never stopped recruiting him," even after he COMMITTED to Duke. Knight also made a comment this week, "I can't wait to play in front of the Duke coaches." Cut even told Knight, "make 100% sure you're coming before you commit." Duke got the raw end of the deal, and I hope Rumph and Dimukajae (sp?) grind his butt tomorrow. I want this game BAD!!!! OFC

GAMEDAY!

This is a game I want Duke to win as bad as any in my 55 years of following Blue Devil Football, and in some respects its a MUST WIN contest! Duke needs to re-establish itself in the state to appeal to more elite prospects. No we will never compromise ourselves to admit the athletes they do in Raleigh. However a win at State today is an attention getter!

State is on the rise again after a one point win at Pitt, and a throttling at home of Virginia last weekend. They can't be as up for Duke as their last two games. Huge game for Duke defense, DC Ben Albert and Coach Cut in many respects. Zonovan "Bam" Knight out of Southern Nash HS is a high quality RB for the Wolfies. As you know by now, he de- commited from Duke to go to Moo U. Although he said he "loves Cut to death" this week, he also said he wants to "show Duke what they could have had." Hmmm. Albert, be prepared, Cut you have no balls at all if you don't want to kick State's can. Your so called buddy, Dave Doeren OPENLY ADMITTED this week "we never stopped recruiting Knight, even after he commited to Duke."

Move those chains offense, keep State's offense off field. Turnovers must be at minimum because State says they're going after ball considering Duke's high probabliity of giving ball up. I look for Duke coaches to have the Devils SKY HIGH and bring back a W and respect. Duke 34-30, and Cut will be a hero in my book. Sorry for the rant, but maybe at least it got you fired up for the game!

Kickoff is set for 3:30 on Fox Sports Carolinas. The bad guys are listed as 4.5 point favorites.

OFC

Boys and girls Coach Cut must GO! Any competent Duke coach would have won this game! Duke should have easily scored 35-40 points with better playcalling. 27 runs by Jackson and Durant for 43 yds??? Coach we werent playing Syracuse today!!! 1st down up the middle, time and time again.

And how about the God awful redzone offense. 3 redzone penetrations 1st half + a 1st and goal at 4 in 2nd half led to two Charlie Ham fg's.Horrible playcalling and its shameful Coach you have made Chase Brice your qb by default!

Kevin White I know you read these boards. You are totally blowing up Duke football! OFC

It's just another case where we keep on shooting ourselves in the foot. Game wasn't on for me to watch either, but I see Chase had 3 more interceptions. The only thing I see today good is the Cheats are getting their asses handed to them. So much for a top five team!!!

JC thank goodness the 'Noles held on at end for the exciting win. UNC stormed back, but the FSU lead was just enough! The game truly saved the day after yet ANOTHER Duke flop. We won't turn things around in football again until we have better coaching leadership, and develop our players. Also the Brice era should be over....Encourage him to transfer elsewhere if he wants to play his final year. OFC

State came out much more motivated in the second half. If they hadn't made so many stupid penalties in the first half, we wouldn't have been up at half. Second half, the Duke offense barely showed up and the offensive line not at all.

2 series changed the game. Brice's two terrible throws, one too high from Noah when he was WIDE open and then throwing into triple coverage. Second, not being able to get 5 yards on 4 plays, one yard on 3 plays inside the 5. No forward push at all from the O line.

Sad. State wanted to give the game away in the first half and when they realized Duke didn't want it, they took it in the second half.

I am with you , Hart. As an example of how meaningless the Syracuse game was, Syracuse was crushed by Liberty (that's right , Liberty). Turns out that Dino may be an even worse coach than Cut. But back to the State game. Worst play-calling inside the red zone I have ever seen. Not kicking a field goal late was just plain stupid. How many times do you have to run plays inside the tackles in order to figure out that State's front three are just too good and that 2 yards a carry just won't get it? The fact that we were up 20-7 really meant nothing, given that for the entire game our offense produced only one TD. According to Cut, this was Bryce's best game. Really? After 3 more costly int's? If we do not get better quarterbacking than that, we will not win another game, except maybe against Charlotte. Wake beat UVA. Why are the teams with new coaches already playing and recruiting better than Duke? The game has passed Cut by.

i look at the game as a 60/40 split. 60 percent of the screw ups go on cut. the time clock management at the end of the first half was brutal. cut screws that up all the time. dont throw the ball twice and stop the clock for the other team and give them the ball back with time. just stupid. the play calling in the red zone sucks. thats cut. why constantly run the ball to the left side? we got nothing all game yet thats where almost every run went. 40 percent belongs to the players. tangelo knows you cant take your helmet off on the field. STUPID penalty. interception in your hands you catch it or at least knock it down. bad td. why do the receivers constantly run a yard short of the marker on 3rd down?
we are now 1-5 and are looking at the same issues for how many years in a row? we are sad

Chase Brice tries hard but isn't a strong runner. Do we not have a quarterback that can do a Connette package? We don't have any bruiser runners and with a mediocre O line it would be nice to give a different look inside the 10.

TOTALLY w/you guys on all points. The game was literally there for us to grab by the neck 1st half, and even 3rd quarter. For Cut to praise Brice after the game, SMH.....Cut's game plan was a duplicate of Syracuse per ALL THE RUNS and he prepared no back-up plan. Bobo was about only bright spot on offense, and any decent hs quarterback hits Gray on the wide open short WHAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN automatic TD pass..... OFC

Brutal, but the truth:

OFC
“This team is ugly. And it’s ugly because of two people – David Cutcliffe and Chase Brice. Cutcliffe is sticking with a quarterback whose best skill is giving the ball to the other team”

sums it up nicely. It’s quentin harris all over again. He refuses to try anything else.

Is it possible that the other quarterbacks show even less in practice? And you can't play a guy who shows nothing in practice? That scares me even more.

Even if they are showing less, it's fun giving a player who works hard a chance in the game. I coached a few players who were good in games, yet looked like duds in practice

BUT...Cut said Bryce had his best game against NC State with 3 interceptions. Boggles my mind. We ain't got anyone who can do any better? Let's go back to the single wing.
