duke football news

I might get booted from the board for the following: I would like to see Duke join Appalachian State, Wake, ECU, Vanderbilt, James Madison, Old Dominion, and Navy in a football conference. Travel costs would plummet. And winning the conference would be realistic. I think that it would be more fun. It makes more sense than going to Syracuse. I don't mean to offend. Duke is elite in basketball, lacrosse, tennis, etc.

GED, your thought has been discussed since I was at Duke 45 years ago. The problems are (1) in order to stay in the ACC I think we need to field a high D I team; and (2) there are still supporters (like Hart, Sky and me) who will support a big time football program and others who will give a lot of financial support as well.

Cut showed it can be done. It's possible that Duke needs to find the next guy who will maintain what Cut started with the excellent facilities and reinject some energy.

It can be done. But it's also a long, hard slog. It's much easier to find three great basketball players than twenty great football players. Particularly when you are already on top.

My high school coaches and teammates groaned when I voted for our Catholic High School basketball team to leave the public school league to join the private school league. I thought that I was pragmatic. But I was probably lazy. Best of luck getting to the top

Sky you were asking about a coach to hire like there's not one out there. Not many folks knew about a guy named Krzyzewski when he was hired, remember? Its about networking. It all started with a call from our late AD Tom Butters to IU Coach Bobby Knight. I want a guy like the young whippersnapper at BC who kicked our rear ends a few weeks ago. Sky you just have to knock on doors so to speak. WE NEED NEW BLOOD. OFC

By the way I don't recall any groundswell of support to fire Latina. It was just a bad move by Cut, and for the record it was not a resignation- that was window dressing. Had we retained Latina, I suspect we would have not missed bowls in '16 and '19. OFC

ged I have had similar thoughts, although not to that detail! Its well thought out and much more realistic. You're not offending me at all, and I have followed the program 50+ years.

I doubt it would ever happen. Conference members rake in so much revenue from tv contracts for instance, I just dont see Duke walking away from it for football. It is a good grouping of schools for football. Duke has a long history against the service academies, has had series w/Vandy in the past (some real thrillers), AND I like the idea of incorporating a couple in-state schools outside the ACC as well.

It makes for a good talking point, and I am sure I will come back to it. In fact, I may come back to it more and more if we continue to tank on the gridiron. I think today will be one of the bigger games of the year for Duke and possibly the future of Coach Cut at Duke.

I am STUNNED Duke is favorite today! After last year's 49-6 whipping administered by the Orange in Durham I would be insulted if I was a Syracuse player, coach or staff member. Not much else to say, except its a huge game for the program and Cut's future in Durham considering we're favored. I think Cuse qb Tommy DeVito does just enough on offense to eke it out for the Orange. Hope I am wrong. Currently Duke is a 1 pt favorite to win. The game is set for 12:30 kickoff on Fox Sports Carolinas on Spectrum cable.

Hart my friend and I do consider you my friend it's not that I think a change is in order it's the way Cut has been bad mouthed on this thread. He brought Duke back into respectability and deserves a lot better respect himself. He is aging and some of his sharpness is dulling but we are better fans than this. I don't know all the answers. I hope there is a young up and coming coach out there willing to take a chance at Duke. If so and he is succesful I hope he stays with us when offers start coming in the Cut was loyal to us when offers started coming in. I won't forget that. OFC

Sky NO DOUBT we're friends buddy, and will go along being friends. We just disagree on this topic. However 2 factors here:

1/ This is G-rated armchair quarterbacking compared to other threads critiquing Cutcliffe. Sky you need to check the other forums before claiming we're "bad mouthing" the coach. Believe me...

2/How long must we go on honoring the man? I am forever grateful to Cut for not only breathing oxygen into the program, but leading us to 10 wins and an ACC COASTAL title in 2013. He followed that up with 9 wins in '14, and 8 in '15. In fact the '15 team WON A BOWL GAME!!! The first bowl victory for the boys from Durham since '61!

However Sky, times change. Duke has fallen into mediocrity, In fact some Duke fans and Duke fb website editors are decidedly in agreement time has come for a CHANGE. Other ACC programs have figured out how to beat Duke. Embarrassments at home like 58-7 vs Wake in '18, 49-6 to Cuse last year and 27-6 to BC this year are no longer acceptable. Cut is 0-5 vs Pitt, 0-6 vs Virginia, 1-4 vs Va Tech last several years. We've had losing ACC records the last 4 years, and it was COACHING not the guys on the field who lost at UNC last year. This year, obviously we have found out. WHERE WE REALLY ARE, because the Elons and NC Centrals are not on the schedule.

Very respectfully meant Sky and faithful to my Devils no matter who the coach is!! Hopefully we get the Orange today, and start a turn around. However it is time to "Cut" ties.

You guys are making a putrid Syracuse team look like NCAA champions. Yikes.
Hope the 2nd string QB does better.

Up 30-24 with 10 minutes to go!! Got to keep scoring and hold on to the ball. All these turnovers are killers!!!

I guess the bookies knew what they were doing in favoring Duke in this game. Far fewer things to correct now. Preventing long TD's, which should improve with return of CB's. Brice still focuses on primary target too long at times, and tried to force the ball into coverage several times. Still suffer penalties on key downs. Lax ball security. On the other hand, OL and DL playing great. Creating confusion by moving LB's around. Receivers not dropping catches. Running backs absurdly good. Brice improving consistency. Kicking game actually pretty good now. I think we are going to give the Wolfies a hell of a game.

It's all about the offensive line. Hope they have turned the corner and this wasn't a reflection of a really bad Cuse Defensive line. I LOVE seeing Durant and Deon getting into the secondary! Love it!

Daniel Jones just fumbled against the cowboys. Returned for a TD. He knew the tackle was imminent. Interceptions are part of playing QB, but repeated fumbling is unacceptable

Daniel not only continues to fail at ball security but he also just doesn't seem to make the right decisions with the ball. Last week when they were driving at the end he tried to squeeze the ball into a crowd instead of running. This week he continued to throw into double and triple teams. The Giants have no choice but to be patient but I'd like to see some improvement from Daniel. I've never rooted so hard for a guy.

Well said. Liftee. Regarding the fumble, the ball was tucked. He knew that he was going down. I'm a coward. I would like him to drop to the ground, and not even take the hit

Meanwhile, Crowder continues to be our one shining light in the NFL. He should have a statue at Duke for that catch he made at the end of the Carolina game.

Keep Saturday in proper perspective. After all it was only Syracuse. Carlos Wray played DL at Duke several years ago in Cut's better days.
