duke football news

Just reflecting again on the season, I must say Deon Jackson definitely had a "sophomore slump." I would trace some of his mostly forgettable year (under 4 yds per carry) to the OL,but he simply wasnt as elusive in '18. I would also trace his regression to Zac Roper's reliance on rather vanilla run plays, mostly runs up the middle that went for very little, or even losses.

OFC
i agree in full with the problem being our vanilla play calling being a huge issue with the running game. if 90% of the time you just hand the ball off between the two guards it makes it really easy to defend. plus it gets your rbs dinged up which has been a big problem for us.

AMEN Surf!!!! I thought Durant showed promise, and hopefully Brown can have a year he plays a full schedule w/o injury. A healthy Hubbard would likewise be beneficial! OFC

so its a nasty day down here in wilmington so i am sitting inside with too much time on my hands.
NEXT YEARS SENIORS 18 total
brittain brown rb
deon jackson rb
robert kraeling ol
jalen miller ol
mark birmingham te
noah gray te
jack wohlabaugh c
rak chambers ol
myles hudzick s
marquis waters s
michael carter 11 s
mark gilbert cb
branden hill lb
xander gagnon lb
derrick tangelo dt
victor dimukeje de
drew jordan de
ben wyatt ls
so thats 4 OL, 2 RB, 3 S, 2 LB, 3 DL, 1 CB, 2 TE and 1 LS
with 18 known openings and surely some injury and portal guys i bet next years class has to end up between 22 to 24

so there seems to be some thought that a couple of guys are still looking at the portal. might be a busier second signing day than we thought

Duke will have to clear some space. Right now there's only one available scholarship.

sorry thats what i meant. there are some players still looking at the portal to leave Duke
PS penn decomitted from bc today
Any word lately on any coaching changes?? Would really like to see at least one..

Looks like Penn committed to Duke. 3 star center with some high DI offers.

Penn is a great pick up for duke. we get our center of the future and he gets to learn for a year behind to good upperclassmen. per 247 this now puts duke at 10th in ACC and 53rd nationally. this puts us at 85 so we are full right now but if any more players hit the portal then who knows

Cant blame him in the least surf, under the circumstances you mentioned. Why not go somewhere a program has an established qb, and is known for a DOWNFIELD passing attack. 2nd wide lost this route counting Bracey.

WELL CRAP. isaiah kemp frosh db to portal.

Surf first off happy new year buddy to you and your family. 2nd, I saw the Kemp move and its certainly disconcerting. I wish I knew whether these transfers as a whole, are generated more by our mediocrity at present and dissatisfaction with the scenario in Durham, OR simply more PLAYING TIME elsewhere.

It would be good to know its not the general state of the program, but instead solid players in front of these guys departing. Cutcliffe keeps a pretty tight lid on inner workings of Duke Football, but I am concerned much of these defections are spawned by coaching deficiencies and team morale.

If you have any thoughts please pass them along. Personally it was just like a TKO punch to the gut loss at UNC thats still hard to fathom. A play call like that can sometimes have a "hangover effect" on a team, (per Miami, '15). OFC

Wow, Brown has never stayed healthy and I believe was the starter before he got hurt. Does he know he is behind 2 or 3 others on the depth chart, or is he disillusioned with the program? I frankly don't think it's fair to blame this one on the coaches without more information.

no i dont think this is on the coaches. Jackson and Durant had passed him DUE to the fact he couldnt stay healthy. Coleman, Waters and Hubbard are right there. his brother who played at Troy is now in the cfl. duke runs a ''stable'' backfield where no one gets a lot of carries. if he has any professional hopes i think he needed to look elsewhere. just a really good kid who i wish things had turned out better for at duke.
the only knock on the coaches is that i think they misread the locker room a little. seem to have been caught by surprise by how many kids left early. they bounced back well in the first wave. lets see how they do with the new openings.

Surf my knee-jerk reaction tells me some disenchantment exists in the program, and is prompting these transfers. On 2nd thought, you make a very valid point about the depth factor, figuring in Brown's decision.

Nonetheless given the choice, I would rather go to war next year with BRACEY, YOUNG, and BROWN on the squad. They have all helped us in varying degrees, AND PROVIDE the intangible of UPPER- CLASSMEN LEADERSHIP.

I do think theres more than meets the eye here, and its not good. There has to at least bit of dissension in the ranks. Its for good reason. Its got a lot to do with our Offensive play calling which is quite inefficient, and I still think the play call at UNC caused the players to lose some respect for the coaching staff. Also for two consecutive years we've lost games at home by margins of 40+ points to Wake and Syracuse. That suggests apathy. Unfortunately I suspect Cut to keep his staff pretty much intact, and thats contributing to low morale.

I am with you all the way, Hart. Besides, who can blame the transferring kids for wanting better direction and preparation for the future. Duke football is stagnating, and Cutt is going to have to make some really significant changes to restore the players' faith in the program.

I think we all know that it is highly unlikely that Cut will make any staff changes. There is no way of our knowing if there is a major internal problem, or just guys looking for new pastures. Those who know what's going on aren't going to share with us in this forum.

okay we all need to calm down a little bit. i am as frustrated with Cutt as anybody BUT the portal transfers and decommits are everywhere and not a duke alone issue. duke has 8 in the portal with 7 being grads. #8 (kemp) was dismissed/told to leave for issues. only bracey, brown and reed would have played meaningful minutes. we have younger and hungrier WRS now and reeds replacement was already on campus last year as a grey shirt because until last year reed was a bench warmer who had NEVER produced. brown has never stayed healthy which sux for us.
FYI

just an example that this is happening to everyone. now that you can leave for ''greener pastures'' i think this will be the norm. hell, when you think about it, get your degree from duke then go finish at a school that can put more than 15,000 in the stands and actually has a game day atmosphere. makes sense to me

i truly think THIS is the make or break year for Cutt and the staff. one of the frosh qbs will have to show a lot of promise this year kinda like the uncheat kid did.
ALSO
spring enrollies arrived yesterday
WR malik bowan
QB luca diamont
LB christian hood
DL michael reese
DL aeneas peebles
S j'marick woods the transfer from michigan

Thanks, Surf. Great analysis. Eases my paranoia somewhat.

We are all Duke football fans in the end, and I hope the new guys will make us forget the guys leaving. Maybe Roper will learn a thing or two...a guy can dream can't he?

Surf I appreciate what you put into this thread. We need a football board but of course it was hacked probably by a heel geek. No of their boards were hacked. Hmmm. Anyway I spend a lot of time with basketball but just want all you football guys to know I read the football post everytime one pops up. GO DUKE ATHLETICS. OFC

Sky knows I am fully invested into Duke football as well, and really like to keep up with the program year round (followed since 60s). That said, I also want to thank Surf for all his consistent and detailed input. Like Sky said also, its great we can keep this thread going!

Surf I guess in light of the disappointing season, some of the transfers have SEEMED like a backlash by a few of the upperclassmen toward staff. Whether they are or not, we must MOVE ON. Speaking of moving on, glad to see Jim Bridge resign as our OL coach. He had no biz coaching OL, and was promoted off of a win over a very mediocre bowl opponent in '17. I wish him and his family well, but this gives hope we will bring in a capable OL coach!!! I am sure Bridge was offered another positon OR told a firing was imminent. Regardless its the first positive move per coaching changes since offseason for DUKE FOOTBALL!! Now, heres to hoping Coach Cut will bring in a qualified OL coach rather than simply promote from within the program. Still keeping eye on Roper's status....

Guess I am in the minority , but, I reallly liked RR as head coach of the Panthers. Going forward, I hope all the changes down there are positive as I am big Panther fan. You already know where this is going by now, so, after next season I would be happy with seeing wholesale changes made to the Duke staff if they have another disastrous season. Hope the ship gets righted , but , it don't look all that promising right now. Like some others, I am old enough to remember when Duke had good football. I know they will never be a national CS contender. However, they could be good enough to contend for the divisional leader year after year. jmtsw

the article on 247 that referenced steve wiseman reporting about bridge resigning said CHANGES are coming. this means (to me) that there is more than one coach being replaced. next week is that coaches conference (12-14) where Cutt seems to make his moves. lets hope for some similar moves like trooper and albert type impact coaches.

I LOVE Trooper and Albert! Judging by posts to Cut's twitter acct, I think he's well-aware DUKE FANS want Roper out! OFC

so just an interesting tidbit/maybe something
Jaylen Kelley-Powell has entered the portal after graduating at Michigan
6' 4 star safety that duke recruited out of high school
only played in 3 games this year to take a redshirt year so 2 years left.
he and J'marick i think are friends and are tweeting.
we have 2 schollies that opened up so a 4 star safety would be a really nice fill. he and woods would definitely make our defensive backfield better
FYI this is now the 17th transfer out of UM 2017 recruiting class. thats how it is at the factories.

I dont know if Cut reached out to ex Duke OL coach Marques Johnson or not, but its a moot point now. Johnson took the same post at Missouri yesterday. Bottom line we have a vacancy at OL coach, and continue the "Roper Watch" at OC.

Everything is pointing toward more changes on the staff. I didn't think it would happen but now I'm thinking it's 50-50 or better that there will be more changes on the offensive side of the coaching staff (and I use the word "offensive" in both ways). We'll know a lot more in 10 days.

I don't Steve Spurrier is gonna walk down to the sidelines but surely there's got to be some young bright up and coming offensively minded coaches out there that will be capable of taking over for Cut someday. I'm old school to the point that I need to be a little more open minded. Dabo was a young and up and coming one time. So was Nick Saban . If fact all the top notch coaches were once young and up and coming. I know when Cut leaves it's going to be hard to find an established successful coach. We may have to find that young and up and coming coach. If we get a coach who can make Duke a strong program it's gonna be hard to keep him but it can happen. I would love Duke to be as succesful as say Stanford. The stadium still needs more up grades. I believe it can happen. I love Cut. He did make us better . His character stands with the best. OFC
