duke football news

just to bring this thread back towards the top
duke finished 11th in the acc with 154 missed tackles.
that is 12.83 per game.
only worse than us were bc, nc state and fsu
my only defense of this is that i think our tackling got much worse late in games due to our offensive offense (lol)
as was pointed out on another board, we had 10 D players that had more snaps than the most played clemson D player
lack of depth? lack of development? to me this is an issue that the D coaches must answer next year.
these are college kids. they cant be great if they are playing way way to many snaps
Ironic. I recall that at the beginning of the season, Cutt bragged that this was his deepest team ever.

Deepest maybe but we lost way too much experienced talent on both sides of the ball. A QB with really no starting experience until this year. Our recruiting is still not up to par. Who will be QB next season? I really didn't have much expectations for this squad. Nor do I next season unless we grab a decent QB in the transfer portal.

Plus, we are losing 5 starters.
we are actually okay on this.
tre hornbuckle was the starting LDE but drew jordan is a good good replacement
eric cerenord was the starting LDT but tahj rice is fine
trevon mcswain was already splitting starts with derrick tangelo at RDT
dylan singleton was the starting rover safety but lummie young is a ''ready to start'' backup
koby quansah at MLB is my worry. is shaka heywood or rocky shelton ready to step in?

LB depth includes xander gagnon, rocky shelton and sayyid stevens. xander to me should always have beefed up to DE. rocky looked good in limited action this year. sayyid will have a redshirt year under his belt so we shall see. chris rumph might get a little more LB snaps this year. hmmmm

DT depth includes elijah brown, dewayne carter and christian rorie. this is really big size we are developing

DE depth includes ahmad craig, ben frye, r j oben and caleb oppan. ben looked good as a backup this year. r j oben was the best of the frosh until he was lost for the season to a knee injury. caleb and ahmad now have a year under the belt. we also have chris rumph here also.

to me this is the defensive fronts next year 2 deep as of now
LDE drew jordan ben frye
RDE victor dimukeje r j oben
LDT tahj rice elijah brown
RDT derrick tangelo dewayne carter
SLB shaka heyward rocky shelton
WLB brandon hill xander gagnon

this leaves two wild cards. chris rumph needs to be on the field a lot but i think they hide him at either DE spot and rover safety which is our safety/lb hybrid spot up by the line. this way the opposing o cant get a steady bead on him. the second question is whether axel nyembwe DT is coming back to the program. keep hearing he is supposedly still enrolled so hopefully grades are up. that would give us a good shot in the arm at DT with a rotational kid. rorie has great size but coming off a knee injury i would like him to develop back in slowly.

So, the question becomes: "Is Cutt the only coach who is capable of getting Duke 4 or 5 wins a year?"

DI good question. The answer is NO. I give Cut credit for showing Duke is capable of winning. Duke won 33 games over 4 years ('12-'15). Cut's a good coach who' s own stubbornness has gotten the best of him and the program over last several years. (thats a whole other story).

The facilities have been significantly upgraded for the football program considerably since the Barry Wilson/Goldsmith/ Franks/Roof era. The stadium upgrades, plus weight rooms, locker rooms, indoor practice availability, etc are all significant improvements.

There are good young coaches or established older coaches who could have exceeded Cut's win total this year. We gave away at least 2 games if not more. Duke is BEYOND the notion of "Oh my word, we better hold on to Cut forever, remember the seasons of zero to two wins!!!" Sometimes the answer is as simple as staff changes under the head coach.

Spot on, Hart. Cutt needs to adjust his priorities. His gratitude and allegiance to Duke should outweigh his allegiance to his coordinators. He needs to do what is best for the program and not just for his psyche. I do not think his coordinators would have any problem understanding Cutt's prioritizing the program over their personal interests.

I quickly watched the Miami game last night again. There were a lot of the same issues with poor running game (amazing how many runs were for losses) but the emphasis on down the field passes (even in the face of a strong pass rush due to our overmatched offensive line) was quite different from other games. Several times receivers were wide open.

My conclusion? If our line can pass block even a little better, the offense can and should be opened up next year. Let's hope that whomever is in charge of the offensive line next year can get the line to do a little bit better, and whomever is the OC recognizes the need to throw the ball down field.

Did you mean to have Ben Frye on here twice? Shouldn't one of him be Brandon Hill?

DI thanks buddy, and you really explained my point. Thanks for expanding on it so well! As you say TEAM's interests must come first! If he doesnt change OC's now, I doubt he ever will. OL coach needs to go as well, and/or be reassigned. OFC

lets hope its just a rumor but seeing questions as to whether trooper will go join lane kiffins new staff. evidently they have good history.

Well, looks like no changes coming. Could be another tough season. No bowl this season to get extra practices and probably start a young qb with no game experience.

But, Cut did say on one of his last coaches shows that we could be Really Good next season. We will see.

You know, when you make a prediction knowing full well that there is zero chance that it will happen, it is still a prevarication. Just sayin'. OFC

matt luke to georgia as OL coach. would have been a home run hire for us as OC.

I wonder if Cut even reached out to him??? He probably called Luke and consoled him over the firing, but Stubborn Cut I doubt mentioned a job at Duke..

Sorry for my venting..

10 ACC teams made bowl games this season and we are not one of them still stings. I was at the game in Blacksburg when Duke gave VT one of its worse home losses at home in quite some time. Then at that time, I thought wow we have a shot at winning the coastal or at worse going to a bowl game.

Since then VT has went the opposite direction and the wheels came falling off the bus for Duke football. The loss against Unc and Syracuse just blew my mind.

I would have hoped for Cutcliffe to have made some kind of changes( cough cough OC) this offseason.

I still want to continue being a season ticket holder (even though I usually only make 2-3 games with owning a seasonal outdoor business that takes up some weekends)... I just am still in shell shock with how this season went.

Thanks for letting me vent here and Go Duke!

Yes the record doesn't really tell the story. The story is:

--losing the UNC game (could stop right there) on an unnecessarily high risk play

--getting absolutely blown out by mediocre or worse teams.

--2 of our 4 wins were against lower level teams so we only really had 2 bona fide wins.

Certainly in view of such a season, some internal changes would be in order.

two more items of note
liam smith to transfer portal. never used third string center so no great loss

Noah Gray is named 2nd team all-american by the Walter Camp Foundation as a junior
just a reminder since i have beaten this to death BUT rivals rated this kid a 5.3 2 star
not even a 5.4 2 star but even lower. just shows you that sometimes you just cant tell
about a kid. we were his only P5 offer. sometimes coaches see something scouts dont.

okay lets talk recruiting since early signing day is NEXT week. this is a big weekend for duke. all the commits coming to town (minus gary smith who already took official) plus a couple of prospects.

jontavis johnson 6' 180lb wr from ga. would be this years calhoon type player and steal. would be a huge get for us.
ryan smith 6'2'' 210lb lb from alabama. not a camp kid so only rated on 247 but watch his huddle tapes. nasty tackler. i like this kid a lot

we have also offered a couple of committed kids
addison penn 6'4'' 280lb center. committed to BC but.... makes a lot of sense because our current centers are jack wohlabaugh who will be a senior and will taylor a junior next year. solid 3 star on all boards.
da'quan johnson 6' 190lb S committed to Troy. two sport kid who is also a basketball player. fills a need because we had 2 S graduate plus 2 enter the portal.

great article in the atlanta journal interviewing the head coach of north forsyth high school. they were down 34-9 at half and came back to win 44-41.
the reason this was great for us is that Nicky Dalmolin is the captain and 4 year starter on this team. he had 13 rec for 237 yds and 4 tds. read that again.
the coach says Nicky is the most underrated kid in georgia because in most games he is doubled if not tripled teamed. also said Nicky will go down as the greatest receiver in school history. he stated that the reason Nicky is so under the radar is that after committing to duke as a SOPHMORE that he never went to another camp or took another visit. his coach said every school in the country has called but Nicky has stayed true with duke. WOW. dont forget when he committed he was an ESPN top 300 kid. espn, 247 and rivals have all devalued this kid because he did not camp as a junior or senior by his own choice. in an interview i read he was saying that duke is going to use him all over as a hybrid TE/H back/wr type. at 6'4'' he has the height to be anywhere.

Sitting here watching the 1AA State Championship game. Three UNC recruits are torching a team that hasn't been beaten in 3 years and only given up 36 points the entire year. 56 points so far with 7 minutes left. The QB is 6'8" and his top two receivers look to be studs as well. Cut should have promised that guy the moon. He could have started from day 1 at Duke but he'd rather sit behind Howell for three years. UNC has him as a TE on the depth chart...

He lives fifteen minutes from me. He would not go to Duke because his dad played for Mack Brown as a punter. This is the schools first state championship.Cutt would have developed him into a Peyton Manning.

That's crazy. I can't fathom waisting his talents making him a TE. This guy is the prototypical pro style QB any school would love to have behind center. Had no clue his dad played for Mack Brown.

front page of 247 has duke working on a flip from purdue
jatlen stinson a 5'10'' cb from bama
very fast but short which has limited his offers
louisvillen, purdue, duke and nebraska offers along with a bunch of good non P5

Not sure if posted but AK Reed and Bracey entered the transfer portal

I can’t believe what never happened with Scott bracey. Dude was a top 25 kid as a junior and was an amazing qb in high school although he was projected as a WR. Wish the staff would’ve given him a chance at qb, think he could’ve been great

ryan smith the lb from bama just committed. this kid is a baller.
was named the bama 6-AAAAAA defensive payer of the year. team went 15-0
yet rivals hasnt rated yet so expect their normal 5.4 we are to busy grade cop out soon.

Linebackers have been a Duke strength in recent memory, and its nice the trend is continuing! Louisville was considered the leader, but we somehow pulled it off! OFC
