duke football news

was in pinehurst this weekend for us amateur tourney but duke had their second scrimmage friday night. wasnt there but steve wiseman has a nice review of cuts after interview
the offense looked much better this night. cur way down on the penalties ans turnovers.
as of right now zach baker is starting in front of santos at lg
** also on a side note 247 sports has jacob monk on their preseason all american freshman team**
the defense looks very solid as we expected. lots of playing time last year seems to be paying off for this year
the dbs have been very good both against the pass and the run
first string o scored 24 vs 2nd team d
first team d shut dowm 2nd string o
all this being said i still think bama beats us pretty badly.

Surf, thanks- yes Wiseman did have a nice account.....Put you on spot here, because you do have keen insight on squad. Do you see Bama taking control EARLY and running away with it like they did in Durham years ago in Cut's early years? Or do you see us making it close at least for awhile early? OFC

All this gnashing of teeth about Alabama may be accurate, but remember, we stayed with Clemson for a half last year, at Clemson, and look what they did the rest of the season.

The problem may come when Duke inevitably takes out its starters and our second team has to play Alabama's five star bench.

What worries me is that Alabama was embarrassed and humiliated in their last game against Clemson. They have had entire off season to hear about.

Saban has not let the returning players forget it in their preparation for this season. They are still Alabama and Saban is still the coach.

Hate that we are the first team to face them since that debacle. Hope they don’t take out all those pent up frustration on us.

There is no mercy rule so I hope Saban will call off the dogs before to much damage is done.

I know it is a money game but there is no reason Duke should ever be playing Bama in football.

I am worried about coming out of that game with a rash of injuries.....OFC

the problem with playing a team like a clemson or a bama is they are so deep in every spot. you might play with them for a half BUT they just keep pounding your best kids with player after player who is as good. as liftee said, we played with clemson for a half. 35-6 was the final and the next game we were so beat up and tired we lost 59-7 against wake at HOME. that was a brutal game in which we got killed because everyone was so dinged and tired. neither line could generate any kind of push.

Surf that Wake game still really haunts me as a VERY AVID DUKE FOOTBALL FAN. You make A REALLY GOOD POINT about why the romp occurred.

However Wake is the KIND of game Duke MUST WIN this season to entertain any hopes of a bowl bid. I hope the loss is burned into our players and coaches memories, and we play with a REFUSE TO LOSE mentality. OFC

it's time like this that you hope Cut and White knew what they were doing in scheduling this game. I would hope they realized being the first game of the season that it could give the team confidence if they do well, but could crush them for weeks to come if we get dinged up too much. (Sigh) In Cut and White we trust.

Regardless, it is still better than opening with NCCU.

well people seem to think its shaka heyward (rfr) time. he will be the starter with brandon hill (rjr). the other name being talked about is rocky shelton (rfr). he will probably first off the bench. that leaves xander gagnon (rjr), jacob morgonstern (rjr) and sayyid stevens, a true frosh for depth. my thoughts are that xander has had chances and really never shown well. i have always thought he should have been a de kid. jacob is an interesting kid to me. he is 6'4'' but the staffs habit of pigeon holing a kid put him at safety his first 2 years. i remember an article about him his senior year in high school when he absolutely shut down a 4 star te going to penn state. of course he was playing up on the line in that game so i am hopefull that this might be a spark for him. sayyid will play in a few games but i think they will want to red shirt him.
when quansah comes back i do like the 2 deep with jacob thrown in as a deep rotation guy.

Thanks surf! Doesnt quite sound as bad depth wise as I thought at LB. Now, question becomes can we dodge ANY FURTHER SERIOUS INJURIES in practice between now and Game Day vs 'Bama????!! OFC

Surf wonder if Robert Nelson (walk on) is getting any reps at qb in practice? He would back up Katrenick as 3rd on depth chart for now I would think. Looked decent in scrimmage.... OFC

Well I guess the silver lining is people who need experience will get it against the best possible opponent. Please, no more injuries!

also per ncaa rules teams can have a limited number of recruits at a ''neutral'' field game. gary smith 6'2'' DT from tn is coming. maybe a couple more.
in case you are thinking why bring a recruit to a game like this where we will most likely lose it is because we want to show we are not afraid to play the big guys. Rak said one of the main reasons he choose Duke was because we had this game booked.

This is really going to be a problem, not playing with a right tackle. Just kidding, I think you missed someone. Santos?

I'm surprised Rumph isn't a starter. Shouldn't I be?

Bracey starting makes me happy, at least for him.

per Cuts interview the other day bracey has played his best since coming to duke and earned the starting spot.
fixed my screw up on the 2 deep. combined my rg and rt guys. sorry bout that.
big thing to me was how many freshman and red shirt freshman are on the 2 deep on O. we are young but really talented. look at the WRs. calhoun, pancol, harding are all true fr. smith a rfrosh and add bobo as a soph and wow we are young. add in the talent we have verbals for this year and man we are going to be strong in the future.

the reason rumph2 is back up at DE is a numbers crunch. we have lots of bodies at LB and S. i am hoping by mid year he gets moved to that hybrid safety/lb spot but right now we need him on the line. we missed on recruiting 2 years in a row or did not want a DE so.... 3 upperclassmen and 3 true frosh who can play this spot besides R2. we are playing bama and nd in our first 4 games so they are going with experience. i think craig and oben both develop and will be on the field in the second half of this season.
victor dimukeje jr
tre hornbuckle sr
drew jordan jr
ben frye rso blew his knee at end of last year and not expected to play this year
r j oben fr
caleb oppan fr
ahmed craig fr
christian rorie fr acl injury last year in high school so we wont see him this year.

we might have a good showing fan wise. per the duke sports dept we sold 3 times our allotted tickets. all duke fans? i dont know. remember the year duke hosted bama a number of years ago that we (duke) would not sell single game tickets so bama fans bought all of our season tickets to get in. duke ended up having to buy back tickets from bama fans they could sell so there would be people at the games.

Just said on ESPN that the last 6 years of opening day a team that was more than a 7 point dog has pulled the outright upset. LET'S GO DUKE!

Well we may as well start predictions....The official Vegas line has Bama moving up half a point in last 24 hours so now they sit as a fat 35 point favorite. I think we come out fired up and it carries a half as Cut manages a CONSERVATIVE BALL CONTROL GAME with off tackle runs, Quinten keepers and quick screens at the line of scrimmage.

2nd half Bama will wear us down considerably as they adjust to our strategy. Bama 49, Duke 14.....The game is scheduled to kick off at 3:30 on ABC TV HD.

OFC

okay thought i would restart this thread.
so thru 3 games we have had 23 true frosh or red shirt frosh have played in a game. that says TO ME our recruiting is hitting right now.
Santos, Garner and Frye all got their first action in the MTSU game. with Bobo back this week it looks like we are getting healthier
Calhoun, Monk, Pancol, Alexander and Gelotte all have played in 3 games already so i think we can say goodbye redshirts.
Harding, D Carter, Coleman, Oben, Waters have 2 games each. Kemp has 1 game. thats 11 true frosh in 3 games. OUT OF 17 TOTAL.
so far 12 players have taken snaps on our dline. hopefully this keeps us fresher in the trenches than last year.
