mark gilbert put out a tweet today saying it was just a clean up procedure. lets hope so. great kid who we need and wants back on the field. said he will be back at 150%.
these are the kids left on our list
stan ellis 6' 175lb wr
jontavis robertson 6' 180lb wr
surprises me that they still want a wr but an offer just went out so......
dorian mausi 6'2'' 215lb olb
jared ivey 6'6'' 215lb de (when he puts on weight this kid will be really really good)
gary smith 6'2'' 310 dt (most sites have him as og but he plays both and dt is what we are going after)
tyler jones 6' 180lb s
malcom greene 5'10'' 185lb s
colin gamble 5'10'' 185lb cb
havent heard nuch on the greene front lately so.....
only greene is a 4 star on some boards but the others are solid 3 star kids.

Hope we do well recruiting wise. Yeah, saw the tweet, just think it will be midseason or so earliest- just a feeling I have... OFC

II really want to have Gilbert back, but not at the risk of further injury.

Nice to see a safety being recruited who is a 6 footer. I'm tired of seeing our defensive backs being out jumped for passes especially in or near the end zone.

actually if you look at the last 2 years that trend has already happened
2019
tony davis db 6'1.5''
isaiah kemp db 6'2''
jalen alexander db 6'

2018
nate thompson db 6'3''
ken torain db 6'2''
jeremiah lewis db 6'

this years one db kid is 6' and the ''athlete'' who can be a db or rb for us is 6'1''

first full pads practice is tom. pray for no injuries

so lb prospect Dorian Mausi has put out notice that he will be announcing tomorrow. right now we have all the cb picks for him (although that total is only 4). what is telling is that the 4th cb came in today from the michigan state insider so that is a good sign because they were considered our main hurdle. this kid is going to be good.

Sounds like we came through 1st practice ok. Saw some tape on wideout Jake Bobo. Excited about him! OFC

so with dorian on board we now have 12 recruits. this is going to be a very small class. maybe 2 to 3 spots is what they are saying. perhaps one DL, one DB and one WR to go. i think the DL kid is a must. i dont know whether it will be a DE or a DT. if we get another tackle then we can bump reese to edge or if we get lets say ivey then he goes outside and reese goes inside. maybe rorie (recruit from last year) goes inside. at 280 in high school he was already large for an end. could very easily be a tackle. also need one more db type kid. we have 2 seniors and 3 rjr kids in the defensive backfield this year. i feel like there will be some rjr kids who will move on this year and one will probably be a db. i am kinda thinking the reason that we just offered a WR is that maybe just maybe (this is my thought alone. no inside knowledge) is that scott bracey might move on. keep hearing that he really doesnt have the fire for the game but has taken advantage of the educational part of the scholly. good for him.

One of the things I respect Cutcliffe for is he doesn't run kids out of his program. I always see the top teams with 20+ recruiting classes and wonder how they can do it every year. I guess the answer is they run kids off. A dirty side of college football which of course will never ever be mentioned on ESPN.

yeah if cut gives you a scholly then you are given 4 years to get your education. my understanding is that if you are a rjr that before the rsr year they might talk to you if you are not in the 2 deep. just an example of 2 rjr kids who i would not be surprised if they left would be liam smith and elijah deveaux. smith in his 4th year is a third string center and elijah isnt a top 4 rb. a j reed the kicker who struggled his freshman year and never recovered is another rjr who might move on. they have had 4 years and should have their degree in sight.
11 seniors
16 rjr
we have 12 signees and 2 to 3 more hoped for/ expected. also dont forget we have a kicker who is grey shirting this fall with a scholly due him in the spring. this means between injury and rjr type kids we are going to have 4 to 6 kids move on.
also i guess we might have some kids leave due to academics (axel) which might free up a scholly or two

Some of the teams that routinely sign 20+ players do so with the understanding that some of them are not going to qualify academically. Not generally a problem at Duke.

Bobo's indefinite loss means others will have to step up. I would expect Aaron Young and Philyaw-Johnson to be targeted more, and perhaps Bracey can finally prove himself (he'll certainly have a chance). Dont forget what good hands TE Noah Gray has, and I can see Jackson and Brown becoming more important facets of the passing game during this period.

gunnar holmberg injures knee in practice and is having surgery. down to 2 scholly qbs. ouch!

Gotta have 1 more guy who can play qb in an emergency. Scott Bracey played qb in hs, and I think he stands the best chance to step in at number 3....

Also, though hes just walk-on I understand qb Robert Nelson looked decent at qb in last nite's scrimmage.

just following up on hart2chesson comment. sophmore walk on qb robert nelson looked good and threw a 44 yard td pass to red shirt frosh jarett garner.
jaylen coleman, the stupidly underrated (5.3 really?) rb, had 13 rushes for 63 yards
jordan waters was moved to rb and had a 9 for 54 played as a db/wr for fairmont. rb caught me by surprise
tony davis had an interception. so glad he came back to us after wobbling early on
the dline looked solid
edgar is back at full speed and had 2 sacks
hornbuckle and mcswain also looked good. the downside is all three of these guys are seniors.

Thanks Surf! Great report....Please keep us posted, and keep that dang injury bug away! Let me ask you Surf, if you were to guesstimate, when would you say EARLIEST we could see Bobo back? I am guessing October. Any prognosis yet on Gunnar? Thx pal, OFC

so the coolest thing i am reading about todays football practice is that 6'5'' 290lb John Gelotte was lining up at TE today. hopefully some jumbo package type plays plus Cut said he is very mobile and can bring something new to that position for us. it kinda feels like the staff has gotten over their pigeon holing players into spots and are trying guys out in all sorts of spots. i like it.

so right now here is what our oline is looking like
LT
holman (rfrosh)
miller (rjr)
addo (soph)

LG
santos (senior)
baker (senior)

C
jack w (rjr)
taylor (rsoph)

RG
rock (jr)
mccintyre (rsoph)
rimmer (rsoph)

RT
monk (frosh)
kraeling (rjr)

so right now monk has beaten out kraeling at RT but this is a hot fight. this would be a frosh starter
holman taking the LT spot gives us a rsfrosh starter
the guard and center spots are good and deep. rock, santos and jack are solid and experienced. also a good backup in all 3 spots.
i actually feel pretty good about the oline right now

look how young but experienced we are.
add in
leitten OT (rsoph) recovering from knee surgery
wrotten OG (rfrosh)
gelotte OT/TE (frosh)
carr OT (frosh)
including perez (OT) and barton (OG) in this years class we are DEEP
only spot opening up next year is LG and from everything i am seeing they are planning on barton (4 star on 247) taking that spot with wrotten probably being the back up.

per steve wiseman jalen calhoun (5'11'' frosh) is the starter now. remember we took him from his ga tech commitment. speed to burn. he has been very very good in camp and was really pushing bobo.

Hey great, I heard he was looking really good, and saw some tremendous praise Cut gave him! OFC

Liam Smith has moved from tackle to center, a position more suited to his 270 pounds.

yeah liam is a guy who never has really panned out or found a spot. as i said earlier in this thread, i would not be surprised if he moves on after this year. he is a rjr that has been in the program for four years and he is the third string center behind two younger guys. of course everything is dependent on injuries and i think how the young guys develop this year at the tackle spots. right now we have two guys that we brought in for the OG spots starting in the OT spots. will any of the other young guys step up and maybe monk can go back inside next year? after a year of training will ron carr have added enough weight to play OT? will leitten be able to recover and be a player after his second knee surgery? will barton come in and be as good as 247 thinks he is?

At least we are starting to build up some depth at OL spots. Thats promising. I only wish Latina still coached OL...
