duke football news

Sounds like things are progressing with that QB transfer. If he comes, I wonder if we'll see a 2 headed monster at QB. I like how Loftis throws the ball but he's not much of a runner (spoiled by Riley I guess).

Still hoping to hear some OL news from the portal.

starting to really sting. peebles to va tech and waters to nc state. when you add riley and oben to nd it just sux that they are all transferring in conference

The one that hurts the most IMO is Peebles. I think Duke really made him a player and for him to leave for Va Tech is a shame. Don't blame Oben, I mean ND is big time. Waters might be easier to replace.

I’m not worked up about Waters, as i think Moore and Jones will be an upgrade, if they stay healthy. I liked Waters, but he seemed to wear down in every game, even when they subbed him out fairly frequently. Peebles is a loss, as we’re already thin on the DL.

surf, quite frankly it's a little sickening to me. Oh I know I am supposed to bang the drum, and come with the obligatory company line("happy for him, appreciate his contributions, go get more $$$,"etc).

However, I think of all Duke has done for players, the Duke education, AND NIL deals we try to offer, etc. Transferring in-conference? Yeah, "it sux" and I certainly don't have to like it.

As I have stated before, I do not like this portal business of being able to transfer when ever you want!! It has turned into a yearly thing. There is no way now to build a team from year to year!! You never know who is going or staying. I guess I will have to get used to it, but I damn sure don't like it!!!

I don't like all the moving around, but I realize two things:

1. The NCAA can't stop it because the NCAA is trying to avoid lawsuits that it can't win and will further diminish its disappearing authority (see, e.g., The Cheaters Whitewash).
2. Coming from a modest background, if I had been offered a million dollars to transfer, it would have been hard to turn down.

These kids are making their schools tens of millions of dollars, why shouldn't they cash in while they can?

I still don't like it though. But I am an OFC and proud of it.

I might be in the minority here but I think players should have the right to transfer. Colleges have always had the power to boot kids after a year since you have to re-up and sign a new scholly every year. Coaches come and go all the time and we say you can't be upset because they are moving up and taking care of their family. "It's the American way". Plus it has always driven me crazy that coaches are making millions in basically tax free money and the players got nothing but a free education that doesn't take into account all the travel time plus practice they have to put in that normal students don't. It is hard to play a sport in college. All this could have been taken care of years ago if colleges would have increased the stipend for kids but they looked at them as sweat shop labor. When I played in 81 the stipend was 40 a month. You could take a girl out maybe once a month on that. That stipend stayed the same for decades. Pathetic.
This being said, I agree this new situation is not working. 1 transfer for free. 2nd transfer you sit for a semester. 3 transfers and you sit a year. I am not worried about nil money really. I think it is ridiculous that a school with the alumni and money Duke has access to cant raise 10 to 20 mil a year. The fact that NC state is doing better than us just irks me.

Also I have always wondered what are the tax implications of nil? Is it considered university compensation like coaches salaries so they pay no taxes? Just always wondered and I hope someone can answer for me.

The problem for Duke is that the majority of alums only care about football when it's a big national game like Clemson or ND. If Duke settles into a 7-5 pattern I don't think it's going to move the meter. Judging from my alumni group, there are 3 people who care a lot and the rest maybe watch 2 games a year.

Now if Manny Diaz can continue the upward trajectory, the money may come. I was hit up with a text, an email and a call for donations within 48 hours of the ND game so Duke is aware of the cache that comes from Big Time Football. But it's going to take time and a lot of success.

so not to detract from the conversation we are engaged in BUT it is early signing day tomorrow. we have evidently added an aussy punter to our signing class. going to be fun to see who signs. Bourdon has said he will not sign early because he wants to meet the new staff. i am okay with that. i think we still have the inside track. where will paul menke, chase tyler and mason wade sign? seems like everyone else is signing as expected. there will be 8 early enrollies.

Any more word on the Texas qb?

I like the adding an Aussie punter. Seems like LSU had great luck with Aussies in the kicking game.

I do not have a problem with allowing kids to transfers. But I think there need to be some mechanization that you cannot transfer in conference or future opponents without sitting out a year AND using a year of eligibility

I've been thinking that we needed a punter because Porter Wilson was such a weapon for us and he needs to be replaced. Perhaps he can be a backup placekicker as well in case something happens to Todd.

I'm setting my expectations lower this year because I think Manny has his work cut out for him. Next year will be a more realistic recruiting year for him. At least he's not starting at Ground Zero like Elko was.

really ground zero? i disagree with you on this take my friend. every kid we are bemoaning in the portal is a cut kid. elmo had nothing to do with their being at duke along with most of the recruited starters this year. cuts issue was his coaching not recruiting.

I think punter is the most underrated position on a football side note.

On a side note, our punter was our holder at the school I was at. Funny stat quirk. If a player gets into a game and all he does is successfully holds on field goals and extra points (successful as in the kick gets off. No fakes or blocked kicks), they are not charged with participation in NCAA football. It was put in place because backup QBs are often holders and teams did not want to lower ypg for QBs because they got in a game to hold. For me, our punter was the best in D 2 in the nation that year and there was a game he simply was a holder. I made sure the opposing school SID took out his participation in the stat file to the NCAA as I did not want to jeopardize winning a stat award because he did not have enough points per game...

I do not think it is ground zero, but I will be EXTREMELY happy with a bowl. I would think in that lockerroom there is some absolutely deflated kids after the Elmo debacle where it has quickly become evident he had one foot out the door most of the season (if not longer). He had this team believing and then this crap went down...

Read yesterday Elmo's infamous "zoom" meeting with our players (surf referenced how upset Duke players were), lasted only four minutes. Duke team rightly wanted no part of Elmo after he pulled his "Midnight Rider" act to College Station.

Elmo IMO, started in a much better position than Manny. He had a large group of Cut upperclassmen, who were merely underdeveloped. Nina opened up the pursestrings and Duke upgraded staff 100%. They worked hard and put players in position to succeed.

Manny needs warm bodies at most positions. He lost players due to graduation, portal, draft, etc. We need to RELOAD, the sooner the better!! OFC

Surf you are correct in terms of the players who were coached up (and bulked up with Feeley's help) to be very good players. But they were not those players for the second half of Cut's last year, unfortunately.

It does make me more optimistic that we can win with the same quality of player that has been recruited at Duke for the past few seasons. Sprinkle in some 4 stars and we might take the next step.

Fire Duke's OC with 10 years experience making stars of Riley, Waters, Jaquez, to bring in Diaz's unqualified buddy with zero years experience who will try to learn the total opposite terrible carl franks airball offense which will hurt the defense as well. Clearly Diaz is a student of the Tony Elliott Brent Pry method of program destruction. Why would any Duke player or recruit stay, oh yeah, academics, I'm sure they'll be thrilled and try hard in practice like all Duke's womens teams. Great job in the transfer portal losing stars to VT and NCSU, only bringing in an ivy leaguer with single digit tackles. Address the coaching staff after the bowl game, lol, great plan. The only coach Duke fans should want gone is Trooper who Nina insists should be HC for the bowl so he's "qualified" when she promotes him a third time to permanent HC in a few years.

Diaz wants to burn everything elko/cut created down and start from scratch so nobody expects more than 3-4 wins from him the next several seasons. No intelligent fan will give him that. If Duke used a tiny fraction of the extra millions from smu, cal, stanford, to keep Elko, or any new HC with any sense kept current assistants, Duke would be favored in 10 or 11 games next season. Only top 25 opponents are ncsu which got crushed by duke's backup qb and fsu which has to come to durham after losing their best qb ever just like unc. Duke should be bringing back best QB and RB depth in acc maybe ncaa, at least 3 good WRs, all TEs, all 9 of its top DLs, and most of everyone else too. Much easier schedule, no louisville, notre dame, clemson, should win at least 10 next year.

Duke's PR has done a great job though of painting "midnight mike" who takes a higher paying job like everyone else in human history as the villain, while those who seem fine with destroying Duke football and screwing fans by refusing to pay him anywhere near what he's worth are the wise heroes. This despite knowing he'd take far less than TXAM's measly 31.5m guaranteed over 6 years to take advantage of Duke's unmatched job security and win 10+ and maybe acc title next year vs probably getting fired by 11th in sec TXAM in a few years. Guess they wanted to redirect the extra millions from expansion and the billions duke makes every year to themselves and wherever suits them best. Too easy.

At any other school, fans would be questioning why a school swimming in an ocean of unused billions seems determined to "save" money when they know full well they'll lose far more millions by not being fair and sinking back to the bottom. Where's the money going?

If Duke's made it crystal clear that unlike Liberty, Wake, and every other P5 school, they'll refuse to pay market rates to hire or even keep a good coach on the 10% chance they stumble upon one even if they can easily afford it, why buy tickets, watch, or donate, isn't Duke committed to losing and being worst of 70 again?

Duke could easily win it all in football if it made it clear nil donations for poor talented black students would have the same impact on admissions as meaningless donations to the general endowment which will never be spent on anything. Duke makes multibillions yearly from investments and donations but as long as they just reinvest every penny and wont spend 1/1000 of that on keeping their best coach in decades let alone any nil they'll be right on track to being turned down by ivy league then joining patriot league or wherever wake forest goes. Actually since wfu kept acc champ grobe and clawson when VT, etc., wanted them why would they want to associate with a school that doesnt care about winning?

Duke/Nina refuses to even discuss conference alignment with its only rivals UNC, UVA, FSU, Clemson, NCSU, VT, Miami, even though that "magnificent 7" would love to vote with Duke as a majority of 8 to disband and leave ACC immediately with zero penalty under nc law and double income [with zero protest since everyone knows that would be useless in nc courts]. Why is Nina/Duke so obsessed with being in a zero dollar minor league with Wake Forest, BC, Lousyville, Pitts, Berkeley, and SMU? Did they learn nothing from Stanford and pac 2?

Apparently according to Devils Den 14 players have signed with Duke. No surprises as of right now.

Surf, are we going to be spectators or participants in the moves around the country on signing day?

So it's too early to expect Duke to get some guys to flip? Is there ANY chance at all that Diaz might bring with him a kid or two who committed to Penn State or is that dreaming?
