Jeffrey I "liked" your comment but not the part about not being optimistic and I'll tell you why.

First, we have the much better coach next week and you see how that got us a win against Wake that we didn't deserve.

Second, I see Grayson growing up before our eyes. Anyone named Grayson can beat the Cheats any time any day!

Third, the Cheats can't stop the run. We may have our starting O line back for next week. If that's the case, we can run against the Cheats, and control the ball like we did last year. Our defense won't tire out because they won't be on the field for 40 minutes.

I'm not saying it's going to happen but in Elko I trust.

I am hopeful, and I may be overly optimistic, but he got the pledged resources. IMHO, the only true step up jobs, the fanbase is ready to toss someone out on their ear after 8 wins. Elko can make this program his.
No doubt.

I am thrilled with the response coming out on message boards, podcasts, etc... With everything with injuries this team has faced very recently, we are thrilled we got that sixth win. While disappointing with so much promise, I personally would be proud of this team with one win in the final three regular season games, get healthy for bowl season, then a dominating bowl win.

Having said that, GTHCGTH!

I see the Cheats humped the Camels today, warming up for next week. I’m not particularly optimistic about our chances, as UNC’s offense is really good. Unless we can play ball control, our D is going to pretty weary. Hopefully Grayson will be more comfortable in his new starting role and can get the job done. But we are going to need to avoid turnovers and penalties, and our receivers need to stop dropping passes.

I "liked" both your posts, because I can see merit to both takes. Unpacking everything I will admit the Cheats "offense is really good" as jeffrey noted.
By the same token, we couldn't have a better coach (best defensive mind in country?), to scheme against Maye and co. Liftee noted Elko's coaching Thursday nite, and I will add Elko's airtight plan had the highly rated Sam Hartman and Notre Dame stopped until 4th and 16. (We held Jordan Travis and FSU in check until 4th qtr.)

I think Jeffrey is really onto something with us being able to move the chains, and run the ball effectively("ball control"). That's a tremendous factor, but I tend to agree with Lift, and see our starting OL intact for the first time in weeks. After all its The Cheaters, and their referees stole it from us last year. Elko is out for blood, and our kids are as well! I think we will run it effectively.

As Lift noted, Grayson improved as game evolved.
The td pass to Jordan Moore was HUGE, tying the game. Also the game management skills showed by Loftis down the stretch (game winning drive), were impressive. Can Grayson "be comfortable" (jeffrey reference) in a heavily hostile environment and manage the game??

I agree we must win the turnover battle, and limit penalties (holding has really hurt our ability to have more "explosives"). Also Jalon Calhoun should carry a football everywhere he goes this week. Drops must cease!! (Amen jeffrey!).

In sum there's quite a bit of insightful commentary in your posts guys. My closing thought to winning the game? Duke MUST SCORE MINIMUM 30 points to win Saturday. It involves controlling tempo offensively, and limiting UNC's ability to score quickly from anywhere on the field. A healthy Darian Mausi at LB and Myles Jones at DB would be a terrific boost!! #GoDuke #GTHCGTH

Excellent summaries H2C and Liftee. Couldn’t agree more about having the coaching advantage this week and, frankly, every week. If we have our first string O-line, we should be able to control the ball and keep our D off the field for lengthy periods. But I haven’t heard yet whether Barton and Monk will be available. Having Mausi and Jones would be huge on our defensive side. And of course there has to be huge motivation for last year’s steal by the refs.

FYI we got a flip today
Jaylen Carl
6'4'' 245lb DE from high point
southwest guilford high school
had committed to nc a&t
92 total tackles
23 tfl
5 sacks
2 pass deflections
not rated anywhere because he had committed to a&t but that is really solid senior year production
never going to say no to a dline prospect

Thanks surf! I think we got a diamond in the rough here. I have watched some tape of the young man and he moves well, very physical player also. I think he could be quite valuable on the edge. He also had offers from a couple Ivy league schools, and is obviously a bright young man.

I doubt we'll know how many people we are getting back until Friday or even Saturday. Having Myles Jones would be a huge lift and the O line has to get well quickly.

I agree about 30 points will be necessary to win and we have to win the turnover battle.
Line opened at Cheats -8.5. Today they're favored by 11. No respect for Duke, and a larger joke is UNC back in AP TOP 25 after beating Campbell at 24th. Even more motivation to beat 'em!!!

Good write up Conor. Frankly it has to be hard to be a Wake fan and not feel like you let one get away in a major way. I hope Wake gets to 6 wins so it doesn't look back at this game and say what if...

They have winnable games against N.C. State and at Syracuse remaining; don't think they're winning at ND. I kinda think they lose to State and ND, though.

The end of the WF film review (found here, if anyone is interested) reads:

"And that’s the last one. Everything else seems routine. As Clawson said after the game, Wake Forest gave this game away."

Weird game. Kind of similar to the game WF won against Pitt a few weeks ago. Pitt did just about everything in its power to lose that one.

Excellent write up, Conor. Not to sound like a broken record, but your coverage of the football team has been excellent! You have a very loyal and appreciative group of fans here!
You certainly do have a loyal group here Conor!!! Our group may be small, but we're Duke Football Fanatics and crave your coverage and inside scoop!! Thanks, and @jeffrey236 is right on!!

Conor I STRONGLY AGREE Duke needs a "low scoring" game to have a shot at winning.Duke doesn't typically score much, topping out at about 24 over the last five games. Heck with Riley healthy, we only managed 14pts vs Notre Dame.

UNC is easily capable of putting up 24-30 in the first half vs anyone. They have really diversified their offense with Hampton's running. That's the scary part, do they run over us like Louisville?? Plus their passing game is superior to Louisville.

I am banking still on our defense to show up that's been stout most of the year. It's been phenomenal, and must produce again tonite. Elko will squeeze every ounce out of 'em, he's a helluva defensive coach!! He wants this one badly after the refs stole our win last year.

Conor, in closing this one is special. it's our most hated rival. I checked the ACC "injury reporr" Thursday, and while Riley and Pancol were listed out, Belin was listed questionable(I am thinking Henry could play in emergency???).

Who do you think could POSSIBLY GO AMONGST THE FOLLOWING: OL/Monk, Barton
LB/Mausi DB/Myles Jones.
Thanks for all the in-depth coverage Conor, and I am speaking I am sure for all of us!

Duke, 24-20

Hate to be negative but see no chance tonight.
I think it’s unfortunately going to be very ugly
Much of my pick(75%), was based on my heart and hope. I very much realize it could be UNC in a one way track meet. Honestly, I hate 'em so bad though I couldn't bring myself to pick 'em.

Oh that’s completely fair. I’m bummed over injuries which I hate using as an excuse but lord since nd we’ve had the worst luck imagine-able. Going into unc with a qb that’s supposed to be redshirting against a top 2 pick

On a side note to NCAA football in general, is it just me, or even more so this year, or have there been more absolutely idiotic, head-scratcingly dumb moves in-game by head coaches?

Earlier today the point spread had The Cheats a 14.5 and now its down to 10.5. I hope that means some of our injured are playing!!! GO DUKE!!!

We need to run the ball successfully on this drive to eat up some clock or this could get ugly fast!!!

We had a little bit of "interesting" officiating in Tallahassee so what happens, well, they make an appearance in a big rivalry game. Way to go ACC...

That was a great drive for the touchdown. Now we need to keep them from scoring again this half, since we get the ball to start the 2nd half!!!

This is a perfect example of why I am a fan of deferring to the second half...

Defense has gotten a big breather. That was one of the longest 14 yard TD drive...
