duke football news

I can't explain why, but this game just feels so much different from the Clemson game. Maybe it's Gameday and just the amount of media attention on this, but I feel like this is such an important game to win. I hope the boys come out ready to play tomorrow and pull out the win. A win tomorrow would be amazing for our program
It's an unbelievably great moment for Duke football. I really didn't know if I would see a moment quite like this again in my lifetime. 4-0 with an opening nite win over Clemson in our pocket??? Duke fans storming the field???

I am old enough to remember the great Duke coach Bill Murray resigning as Head Coach in the 60s after we thrashed UNC 34-7. Our school president earlier told Coach Murray: "We are de-emphasizing football." Murray resigned after the game, and I couldn't blame him.

It was the beginning of a long slide (although I was excited in '71 when we started 4-0 including wins @ Fla and Stanford), that lasted until Steve Spurrier won the ACC TITLE in '89. Cutcliffe was a mixed bag, but did win a Coastal title and 10 games in '13. However, he stayed too long.

This is almost unprecedented!!! College GameDay here FOR FIRST TIME EVER less than two full years removed from Elko taking over a program in ASHES???? Rarefied air this old, grumpy Duke fan is gleeful over. Thanks for this ride guys, kick some Irish @$$ tonite!! Duke 20, Notre Dame 16. OFC

we didnt do the 3 man rush all game till the 4th and 16. if you do that you must have a spy on the qb. horrible gaff by the staff. that being said, we played the #11 team in the nation to a standstill for 59 minutes. missing 2 SHORT fgs hurt us early. if we had even 1 of those i think they go for it on that 4th down to run the clock out.

HOPE RILEY DIDNT DO SERIOUS DAMAGE TO HIS ANKLE.

The moment i saw we were only rushing 3 on the 4th and 16, I screamed. Our pressure had been working beautifully, and then we back off and give Hartman the green light. Mystifying is an understatement. Was it Santucci or Elko who called that scheme?

Elko took ownership of the 4th and 16. Said they are supposed to have linebackers at the sticks. Said they just did not prepare for a scramble. That and the fake punt were unfortunate mistakes that either were on the coaches or on the players for just not being aware.

Having said that, we competed, fought, and played the Irish just about evenly! You are not going to get the breaks every game. Against clemson, they failed to score inside the 10 twice. This time we didn't get the breaks: a fumble that got away from 4 Duke guys, an interception that our DB didn't handle. We did get a break on that coffin corner punt which the ref got wrong and then reviewed.

In general, I could not be prouder. Who here thought we would be one or two plays away from being undefeated at this point in the season?

One more thing. I wasn't on last night so could not comment on Hart's pregame statement. I admire and respect those of you, like Hart, who suffered through the many bad years of Duke football. I too did but I must admit I lost interest for a time during the 80s and 90s. For you Hart, I am so happy that Duke football is back where it should be!

Santucci calls the defense but Elko has input and certainly would've had override power there.

They'll have an extra week to stew on that play, as discussed in the column from last night.

Thanks Lift, you are always very kind. A gentleman and a scholar! I truly appreciate it, and THRILLED TO THE CORE Duke Football has arisen to a national stage again. We do have IMO, A top 25 team despite the heartbreaking loss.

Elko is a REAL MAN, taking ownership of the 4th and 16 "drop eight" scheme. Naysayers are having a field day trashing the call, but look at flipside: Had we blitzed five, Hartman is just as likely to have hit the huge TE (he killed us), and he would have rumbled for 1st down. Then the critics slam Elko for blitzing on 4th and long.

Duke fans be thankful we have a REAL FOOTBALL COACH again. This guy is the most knowledgeable and organized coach we've had since Spurrier. He will chew on this loss harder than any of us, and our season is just beginning. Conference play is looming, and Elko is going for the GOLD!!! OFC

Ok, after a crappy football weekend for me (minus my high school getting a blowout win, which included three straight offensive plays scoring a TD and a running back who had 140 yards and two scores after two rushing attempts), I am going to put my thoughts.

I agree with the @ConorONeill that there are no moral victories for this program. I hope every single player is mad as hell about this loss. But in the rise of any sports program taking the steps to greatness, these gut-wrenching defeats occur. I am a youngin, born in 1985, so I cannot equate this to pre Championship K basketball losses, but I am sure the OFC can easily make this comparison.

I am not going to get into game specifics, but I know for me, there is always a thought in the back of the mind in big Duke football games of "we are getting a little national exposure, just do not get embarrassed." There are still a lot of obvious things that need to be cleaned up, but how in the world can anybody not take away from that game a thought that "Duke can play and deserves to be on the field with anyone"? All I heard all week was how Notre Dame was deepeer, more skilled, and will wear Duke down. Duke won that second half EASILY minus one play. How can all those recruits who were at the game, especially defensive guys, not walk away with a positive impression and a hunger to get on that field for Duke and think "I will be a difference maker, I will not let that happen?"

On the whole season, we are 4-1. I cannot think even the rosiest of preseason prognostications had us at 5-0. We beat Clemson and then had three straight weeks playing awful teams, but we did not have 1 second of "oh no, we might lose this game." How many top-25 teams can say that?

After we beat Clemson, all but the Duke faithful had the storyline of how "Clemson had its chances" not "Duke dominated." If this game doesn't clearly flip that narrative.

At the end of the day with the way we look, we should win every game outside FSU and the cheats. Win one of those games, we are ACC Championship Game bound.

Thankfully it sounds like Leonard's injury could have been worse, but I see essentially three weeks for Leonard. With our backup, with the rest of our personnel, there should be no reason to lose to State at home.

kwy, you said it exactly right. Duke played the Irish even. A couple of bad plays doomed us. Nothing to be embarrassed about. I feel bad for the players, especially Franklin who probably wanted this game more than any other, but they will come back stronger and better.

Another sign of how far our program has come: the State game is going to be under the lights on prime time at 8 pm! I hope the students turn out like they did for the ND game. I and my wife are traveling there, along with 3 other couples from around the country, to see the game. Super excited to see our continued march to Charlotte on December 2!

It's fall break.

Duke doesn't have a home ACC game on a Saturday with students this season.

Clemson - Monday
N.C. State - fall break
Wake Forest - Thursday
Pitt - Thanksgiving weekend

Crap. That sucks. But maybe our success will persuade some students to stay - has to be more fun than taking dirty laundry home for mom and dad to clean!

Jeffrey I agree with your sentiments. Given our proximity to State and Wake (as @ConorONeill knows), both will have a large contingent of fans in Wallace Wade.

Let's hope a representative amount of students stick around for the State game, and support this exciting and winning team. Wolfpack fans will fill up WW if we're not there in full force. They're quite serious about football, and believe me (I've been around), hate us almost as much as Carolina.

State is a very important game, and one we expect to win. I don't mean this arrogantly. Simply put this team always BELIEVES it will win!! Let's show 'em we're behind 'em! State is a Big Four match-up, & anything can happen!!

We need to go into Tallahassee (5-1,2-0) the following week. We want to be in that ACC TITLE GAME!! #GoDuke OFC

If we are 5-1, we are 2-0 in the ACC :)

I suspect that Coach E will be working on the running game really hard the next 10 days so we can avoid relying too much on Belin for at least the first week. I have a feeling the defense will be ready. Our D has been fantastic for the first 5 weeks.

I think Parker did a good job in Barton's place but I'd like to see Barton back on the field next week to help our running game.

Getting Barton back would be HUGE for the running game. OFC

looking at the PFF break down of the ND game for the oline was interesting
only played 6 guys all night since barton was out.
the coaches took scott elliot out of the center position towards the middle of the game. he got in 30 plays
jacob monk 6'3'' 300lbs slid into the center spot and played all 70 offensive plays
justin pickett 6'7'' 317 lbs went in at left guard for the rest of the game and got 46 plays in
brian parker 6'5'' 300lbs played all 70 plays at left tackle and received an above average grade
jake hornibrook 6'5'' 300lbs played all 70 plays at right tackle and graded out the highest
maurice mcintyre 6'2'' 314lbs moved from left to right guard after they pulled elliot and he got in 64 plays

i think this could be the nastiest oline in quite a while and i kinda like it. barton 6'5' 314lbs come back for the state game so sub him in as a starter and now we have parker as a swing backup tackle. THIS LINE IS HUGE AND CAN BE GREAT in my mind. if one or two of the backup center/guard guys step up and one of the depth tackles i think we can and out muscle any team left on our schedule. man i am so looking forward to the next few years of DUKE football.

so i just cant let things go
i went and looked at the oline roster after ''the big seven''
OT
calib perez (jr) 6'5'' 303lbs. i really liked this kid coming out of texas but he just does not get on the field
ethan hubbard (frosh) 6'6'' 291lbs. a year in the strength and conditioning program will help him see the field
caleb dorris (frosh) 6'6'' 270. needs to add body mass/muscle strength over the next year or two
OG/C
scott elliot (sr) 6'3'' 297lbs. has been a good lineman but i think ND dline was maybe to much
max maycraft (frosh) 6'3'' 302lbs. elko has mentioned him by name and he has been on the 2 deep every week but at tackle because of lack of depth. pretty sure he will end up inside
ben hoitinick (sr) 6'4'' 301 transfer/walk on. just dont know but after a year in our S&C program who knows
jake long (sr) 6'3'' 324lbs. another transfer who is taking a big step up in class. who knows?
reagan mccrannie (frosh) 6'2'' 308lbs. i kinda think this kid will be a player next year.

so lots of youth in the backups to develop along with senior transfers who have one more year i think. add the 5 oline monsters coming in and we are going to have a big and nasty front for a while. i am old school and i still think you win in the trenches. you must win the line of scrimmage to dominate your opponent.

our ''big seven'' are five seniors/grads and one frosh and one sophmore. probably going to need one more year of transfers coming in especially at tackle

Thanks Surf, that's just a great summary of our O line.

I suspect that Elko will continue to look to grad transfers for O linemen and Defensive backs. Those are two areas where experience is just indispensible. He did a great job bringing guys in this year.

Also those seem to be areas where coaching really makes a difference. The test for Elko will be if he can keep his assistants, or replace them with people at the same high level.

Agree @surfdevil wonderful summary on the status of our current and future OL. You are correct about winning in the trenches!!

Lift, your comments ring so true as well: Can we hold on to our quality assistants!! A one time top quality defensive coordinator (and head coach), at Duke is making his money largely on reputation now.Yep, Ted Roof is pulling in over a million a year at Oklahoma, ex Duke DC Jim Knowles almost 2 mil a year @ Ohio State. Can we ante up?

It is my understanding that Nina King made a commitment to Elko that she will be sure the assistants are paid well so he shouldn't have that problem.

And with the new ACC method of revenue sharing, rewarding those schools that have the most success, football coffers should be full! And don't forget my $100 contribution! :)

so a couple of our commits mid season stats
preston watson 6'3'' 285LB DT
4 sacks, 38 tackles, 12 tfl, 1 interception
tyler cherry 6'5'' 205lb QB
109 completions out of 147 attempts for 1529 yds
14 tds 1 interception
tyler has moved up on the on3 board to the #7 QB in the nation.
tyshon reed 6'4'' 225lb DE has been flirting with fla st and had a visit set up but has reaffirmed his commitment after being at the duke-nd game

Thank you for the update. Nice to see we have another QB with size coming in. Also, we should expect the ND game to pay dividends with any recruit who attended.
