Don't think we are in the running anymore
Disappointing, but from his IG posts and such, I would have to guess Wisconsin. Once again, I’m glad we made it this far in the process, and I’m confident if we showcase a good product on the field this season then we can start to target and get more of these big-time recruits.

Also, on an unrelated note surf, I remember you mentioning a 247 insider in a comment earlier, and I was wondering if you subscribe to their premium service. I’ve been tempted to get it for a little while now, and with their 50% off on the annual subscription going on right now, I wanted to ask someone who has it if it’s worth $5 a month for the content and such

Um, folks, for the middle portion of his tenure at Duke, Cut did have more speed and depth than any Duke teams for a generation. Have we really forgotten that?
Don't know about that. First, Cut said only that the team was faster and deeper than any of HIS other teams. Second I would put the Ole Ball Coaches' teams up against any of Cut's teams. Third, the team he was referring to was one of his later teams which did not match up well with other ACC teams, which I think Hart will verify. Fourth, some of that speed and depth was inherited from and/or recruited by other coaches. All I can say is that at times Cut's teams had more depth and speed than those of his immediate predecessors Franks et al.

Jiml's statement is completely correct. Of course typically for Jiml, he carefully chose his words and said "Duke teams for a generation", which covered some awful teams.

Yes DI, Cut referred to one of his later teams, in glowing terms in preseason, merely as a tease for hungry winning Duke fans. Cut did have some speed and richly talented teams in '13-'15.

He won the Coastal in '13.Great accomplishment for Cut, DukeNation I treasure greatly!!! Slowly things began to unravel with the '15 embarrassing multi lateral loss to Miami. What a laughing stock, as we were unable to put anyone DEFINIBLY on the ground (despite one replay).Geez, we were slow!!!

The '19 loss at UNC was an embarrassment at the goal line. Why Cut didn't change plays when UNC called time and adjusted remains beyond me.

We really cratered afterwards, as the last two years of the Cut regimen were sad and embarrassing. Thank God for AD Nina King!!! OFC

Last night one of the ESPN stations had a replay of the Military Bowl. I caught it 1/2 through the 3rd quarter and watched the rest. The unbridled joy on the Duke sideline told the whole story. What a great story last year's team was!
Amen!!! OFC

Cut and his staff did recruit Barton, Carter, Leonard, Monk, Calhoun, Heyward and many other top players on Elko's first team.

So, maybe they were bigger and faster than recent Duke teams.

And not as big and fast as Elko's first team.

And not as well coached.

It is possible to revel in Elko's accomplishments so far, while acknowledging what Cut did in his tenure at Duke.

Unfortunately Calhoun was primarily used as all Cut wideouts in the ex-coach's ladder years. Boundary passes at the line of scrimmage,Rb's would churn up middle, three and outs. Defenses packed the box against the Duke "Cut" offense, because it was pretty much a given what Duke would do.

Conversely, QB Chase Brice flourished in his Appalachian St qb role after leaving Duke with dismal numbers. He adapted to his new offense much better.

Let me make it clear however for the record: I am grateful Cut finally broke thru in his fifth year with an electrifying 34-31 win over UNC!! That 2012 win prompted a bowl bid, and in my humble opinion served as a springboard to the 2013 Coastal title. We won 10 games IIRC, and 9 more in 2014. We appeared to be establishing a program. I thank Cut for our brush with greatness, and nearly beating Johnny Manziel and company in the Chick-Fil-A bowl.

We had a good start in '15, but the bizarre Miami loss began to chip away at the base of the house Cut might build. We still made the Pinstripe Bowl, and won it! (Scottie Montgomery's last and BEST game as Duke OC because he abandoned the playbook!!)

The Daniel Jones years produced, what two bottom tier bowls? I really liked DJ and he made chicken salad from chicken feathers. However he could have probably produced more under a different offense. Cut was enamored with grad asst coaches, and seldom brought in top assts. Sure I know $$ was an issue. Things bottomed out with the UNC loss in '19, then Cut's final two years. Kevin White should have never extended his contract.

Still thanks for the memories Cut. The middle portion of your Duke career was a blast! So it's not like I don't appreciate him, but I don't think we'll see any statue.

One quibble. I don't think Cut was enamored of grad-student assistants as much as Duke did not keep up with salaries for assistants. The fundamental reason for the decline of Cut's program over the last few years IMO was his inability to replace assistants departing for better jobs with comparable veterans. And he did try to bring in vets, e.g. Jim Bridge. But Bridge had baggage. Elko refused to take the Duke job until he received assurances that Duke would significantly upgrade its salary scale for assistants. And all credit to Elko for putting together an outstanding staff. But Cut was putting together outstanding staffs earlier in his Duke tenure when Duke's salary scale was competitive.

I agree Cut did put some some solid early staffs early on. OL coach John Latina and DC Jim
Knowles are two shining examples during the Cut's heyday. Nice speaking with you Jim, much respect sir!!

Small weekend but the talent is evident. Could nearly end our recruitment process with a good weekend.

Jiml, you have stated this opinion several times before. While I respect it, I think ignores the following:

1. Coach Cutcliffe's decision to reshuffle his coaches into positions they had never coached or played. That made no sense.
2. No improvement in his offense after he took over play calling.
3. The blatant lack of effort in a number of games where the score would be close for a quarter and then Duke would lay down so that by the end of the third quarter, the opposing coach was simply running up the middle every play so as not to score 70 points on a team that was mailing it in.

Coach Cut's legacy is safe in that he brought Duke football back so that Coach Elko has something to build on. Further, Coach Cut's integrity and character will never be questioned. This does not eliminate the sadness of his last 3 years, which in my opinion should have ended more gracefully one year earlier.

Terrific post Lift. Love the points you made, and the reshuffling of Cut's staff never paid dividends near end of his tenure. He thought it would pacify DukeNation. No way....Nope, no way to celebrate Cut's time at Duke, except a few good years .

Hart, I'm a little more forgiving than you are, but I see and respect your points.

I'm must glad we're beyond all that and have so much to look forward to.

Liftee it's in the rear view unless folks want me to show more allegiance to Cut. I am a happy camper with our program, and the ENERGY Elko has brought to Duke football!! OFC

So it seems that we are 4-6 spots from finishing this class. If we get the 3 guys from this weekend then it seems maybe 1 more for defensive line, wide receiver and a kicker. That will leave spots open for the transfer portal after the season. I like all 3 kids visiting and hope we get them.
June has been really a good month!! Keep it going guys! OFC
