Cut and his staff did recruit Barton, Carter, Leonard, Monk, Calhoun, Heyward and many other top players on Elko's first team.

So, maybe they were bigger and faster than recent Duke teams.

And not as big and fast as Elko's first team.

And not as well coached.

It is possible to revel in Elko's accomplishments so far, while acknowledging what Cut did in his tenure at Duke.
No one disputes that in the first half of his tenure when our schedule was the weakest, Cut performed exceedingly well. However, things went downhill from there as his better assistants left. At the end it was abysmal and hurtful to the overall program. Jusy really lucky we found Elko when we did.

I’m loving this class, all our OL are huge and should be studs, our DBs should be quite good (especially with Mencke), and we won some P5 recruiting battles, which is one of my favorite aspects of this class. I’m also confident that if we can win some big games this season (especially Clemson Wk 1), then maybe we can start getting some more attention from high-profile recruits. All in all though, I trust this staff to recruit the right kids and develop them into great players

It's not "if" we beat Clempsun, it is "when" we beat them.

I'm interested to see if we have closed the gap of size and speed that has been obvious when we played Clemson or Florida State in the past. This is a good measuring stick.

Will Wallace Wade be Orange or Blue that day? I would settle for a good mix.

The students better show up. The school ought to shut down the Wi-fi that day and force them to get out of the library and dorm rooms. Just for one afternoon.

I expect Wally Wade to be rocking that night. Look for Coach Elko to drum up the enthusiasm on campus beforehand. And you know the frosh are going to be sky high for their first game, home, at night on national TV against Clemson no less. I’m reminiscing about my first game Duke played when I was at Duke - we upset a highly ranked Florida at Florida.

Mike McGee our first year head coach, and we upset the mighty Gators and Heisman hopeful qb John Reeves!!! OFC

I think my freshman year Duke beat Sonny Sixkiller and U of Washington up at their place. And unfortunately got hit by injuries and ended the season around .500.
Lift I think we played "Six" and the Huskies the following year actually, and lost at their place 14-6. That was '72, and was a 7-6 game until Sixkiller unloaded a bomb for TD from about midfield. We did get revenge in Durham the following year ('73) 23-21, when Duke qb Mark Johnson hit Randy Cobb from about 10 yards for the game winning score!

However in '71 we started 4-0, with huge wins including @Florida as @jeffrey236 mentioned, and @Stanford 9-3. However, injuries decimated our promising year. We even had guys playing both sides (Rich Searl, plus ACC MVP and 1st team All-America db Ernie Jackson). The squad stumbled to a 6-5 mark, after being nationally ranked earlier at 4-0.

Please tell me we are not done with recruiting news for this year. It is just not fair to create so much fun and optimism, and then to pull the rug out from under us. There has to be more. Even Cut did some heavy recruiting in July. I will settle for rumors and rank speculation at this stage or bad news about UNCheat recruiting.

Well, we’re most likely done for now, our only target who is still in play is Umeh, and the chances are very slim to get him. Right now, we’re standing at 20 commits and that’s about where they want to stay to allow room for transfers. The last guy we really had a chance with was 3* WR Keenan Jackson who committed to the Cheats yesterday.
Any news we may hear would be the new composite rankings for DBJ, McFadden, and Jackson as other sites rank them. Additionally, I have no clue when we’ll start hear reports about 2025. We already have 100+ offers out, but nothing has materialized yet, to my knowledge at least.

Yeah it gets tough because the seniors/grads do have that COVID year still to use if they want. It makes things hard on the staff for recruiting. Peebles DT is a senior who still has his COVID year that he could use if he wants to. Maybe he wants to come back next year and be the big dog on the dline but he could also want to move on. We have a bunch of kids in the same position. This early it is tough on the coaches because they just don't know and they don't really want to over recruit. We are not an SEC classless school

Yes I agree with that last part, we don’t want to bring on more people, promise them a spot, then turn around and say “oh sorry, so and so happened, you’re no longer welcome here”. Other schools like Georgia and Alabama and coaches like Deion Sanders can get away with it, but as a program trying to establish an identity and become competitive, we don’t need to set that image.

I feel like if we have a good year, and we have a good amount of people leave to the draft/transfer portal, then we can draw some good players out of the portal to fill those spots we need

You are incredible in your knowledge of Duke football history, Hart!

I am not surprised I am confusing two seasons. '71 was my freshman year and I was particularly excited because I knew Searl from high school, having grown up in the same small town, and he was a hero in our town. That team was brave if not deep in talent.

Thank you for correcting me.
