duke football news

Yeah I agree. Going for two on the 3rd td was stupid. This loss is tough to digest. Punt fumble they return for TD. Run fumble returned for TD. Dropped TD pass right in receivers hands on 4th down play. We really gave this game away.

Story on today's game.

I really don't feel like going into this ... but the decision to go for 2 is an aggressive calculation of "we stand a better chance to win this game in regulation than we do in OT." It's measured long before the game starts. Duke doesn't want to go to OT with an anemic rushing game and in a stadium where wind made it impossible to throw going in a certain direction. Duke having a backup kicker also skews it toward "go win in regulation if you can pull this off."

You can take issue with it all you want -- just please understand that by going for 2, Elko is playing to win the game.

Yeah I have seen on other threads where the 2 pt try is analytically solid. Okay I don't like it but I will live with it (like I have a choice 😁). Once again I think the difference between this team under Elko and cut is huge. Last year they would have crumbled and lost by 30. This year they fought till the final play. Just a different team even though it's the basically the same players.

Very uninspired performance today, with lots of mental mistakes, including the decision to go for 2 when it was 28-20. Definitely a game we should have won against a weaker opponent. Some good individual performances, starting with Jordan Moore.
Jordan was SPLENDID!!!Other skill players: Calhoun, Watters, Robertson all had critical mistakes.jeffrey was right: we should have won.

This was one of the most excruciating losses for Duke football in a while. A muffed punt on our own 5, a dropped td, a fumble that led to a Pitt scoop and score. We still almost won, but gave away too many points!!

UncCheat losing does soften the blow. Ga Tech alternates 3rd and 4th string qbs and beats UNC. NOTHIN' could be finah than watching the 'holes lose at CAROWHINA!!!

I agree totally with Surf on both his points. First, I might not like the analytics, but going for 2 seems to be the way to go. 2 people smarter than I am and who know more about football told me that right after Elko went for 2 on the first TD.

And, to see this team fight back when I for one thought they had the game lost is a refreshing change! It's like they just knew the Pitt punter would muff the snap! Very soon these close games will start going the other way. And let's remember how the season started, with the goal line fumble, so it's not like we never get any breaks.

I'm loving me some Duke football!

yeah hart we are not alone in our dislike of the first 2 pt try. every person/expert on the ACC huddle show panned the call. oh well we went for it and failed thereby making it necessary to have to go 2 to tie. still love the effort from the kids and nitpicking aside i love what the staff has done with these kids. i hope they bring a good effort against wake next week.

surf good points. We have to move on!! Coach Elko I am sure will be grilled by the media tomorrow, and @ConorONeill will have a thorough and insightful wrap-up, and a Wake preview.

Looking back one more time at a devastating loss yesterday, I am still proud of the comeback despite the myriad of miscues. We had to sacrifice 21 points in mistakes just for Pitt to squeak by.I love Mike Elko, and he knows MUCH MORE about football analytics than myself. Bottom line: Duke made too many errors, and the game shouldn't have boiled down to conversion attempts.

I think we will come out and be ready to play Wake Forest next week, in a very BIG GAME between BIG FOUR rivals. It's an in-state game we need to WIN FOR RECRUITING and to begin to re-establish ourselves in-state.Hartman is a much better qb than Slovis. WE NEED A PASS RUSH next week!!!

None of the miscues like yesterday can occur, as Wake will turn them into points. I think Jontavis Robertson, Calhoun and Waters will come out with renewed focus after their errors, and Elko and Duke will do whatever they must to win the game. Our next two games will be the most important we will play this year!!! BTW, getting Nicky Dalmolin and Jacquez Moore back from injuries would be huge! Bowl practices will be tremendous for further development of our program!

Agreed Hart. We have been relatively mistake free this year and they all happened in the same game. Also some unfortunate motion penalties. I'm sure Coach Elko will be all over the team this week in practice about not beating themselves.

Lift thanks, Elko will definitely get their attention!!!

so Moussa Kane also gets jersey/invite for the us army all american game along with Peyton Jones. guess in normal rivals fashion they will have to drop their ratings

ps never mind, i saw where they only have moussa as a 5.5 and jones at 5.6 so they cant drop much. sometimes you just got to laugh

so i saw where duke has 32 people walking on senior day. maybe conor will be able to get us a list at some point but that is a bunch of kids
Indeed, 32 is the number we were given yesterday. Trying to get the list and will either have a story or message board post with it.

We got DeWayne Carter as an interview this morning and he said he's not participating -- but that he hadn't made up his mind with 100% certainty that he's returning. Elko said yesterday that those who don't participate are likely coming back, and that those who do participate could still return.

I think the 32 is going to include of walk-ons and depth guys, if I'm being honest with the way things have been established this season and what I've heard. I'm sure they won't be 100% on retaining players they'd like to keep -- but it seems like they're keeping a large portion of guys who are eligible to come back.

BTW a HUGE SHOUT OUT TO @ConorONeill for your participation on our DUKE FB board this year. Mike Elko and yourself have been tremendous assets for one of my all-time favorite things: Duke Football!!!

My pleasure, @hart2chesson. I would hardly put myself in the category with Elko, though! haha.

I've been told the list won't be available until Saturday. That's kind of disappointing ... but I get it. In my experience, the week leading up to Senior Day can be hectic with players deciding to participate, changing their minds, families in town, etc.

So stay tuned Saturday.

I'll confess to not knowing for sure the status of any of those three players. Feel confident in speculating that Harding is unlikely to be back -- he just hasn't put it together. Feel like Shelton might look for a change of scenery -- but he made a great play on that bad-snap punt, and Duke might need LBs next season. I'm not sure what Diamont's course will be -- it's not like Duke stands to lose many of the WRs in front of him, and they've got a ton of WRs coming in.

Conor thanks for the info, and as always quite sound observations.

The fanduel website posts a daring and heartstopping pick for Wake:
Since it is a football thread, shout out to the Wolf Pack beating the cheaters with a 4th string QB! I was positive the cheaters would somehow pull it out like they usually do.

2 losses in 10 minutes! It was the Best of Times!
Party time, Lift!!!

Preview for tomorrow's game.

Programming note: I'll be there with coverage. Will be a busy and kind of weird day.
Great read as usual!!! Scared to death of their passing attack, particularly A.T.'s height advantage over us in secondary.

I am surprisingly not so worried about the unique "mesh" offense of Wake. Elko is no dummy, and he will have us prepared for that deception. I will take the 35 pts we scored vs UNC, and think this time it's enough!! #GoDuke

I like Hart's prediction. I also feel that if Duke's offensive line isn't too banged up, Duke will be able to move the ball on the ground and keep Wake's passing attack off the field.

This will be a good one today.

Conor, I noted that you didn't make a prediction but you're leaning toward Wake? Is that in your heart or your mind?

If it reads that I'm leaning Wake, it's my mistake. I genuinely think this is about as even a game as either team will have played all year.

It's a contrast of styles: Duke can run the ball and control LOS; WF has the skill advantage offensively and probably creates a few explosives.

The higher the score, the more it favors Wake; the lower the score, the more it favors Duke.
