really dissapointing game ending last night. we did everything we could to lose that game, COACHES as well as players. on 4th down quit going to the shotgun. quit only rushing 3 dlineman in a ''pass prevent'' defense. players need to stop the ''stupid'' that lets officials make calls that take the game away. 50 yds of penalties on us in final 2 minutes. ugh
the really nice thing is that we played a 90% good game last night. defense made some good stops. offense looked good. i hope the team stays invested in this season. this is where cut would lose the team and we would just go through the motions the rest of the year. i hope elko (and i think he will) keeps them playing hard.

@skysdad and myself aren't here to berate ACC officials for our health. We've both seen enough Duke-UNC games to know when things simply don't add up.

Last nite was the ULTIMATE SCREWJOB against Duke. (Btw, UNC troll I know you're reading this today and getting your jollies so read on). I counted no less than FOUR CRITICAL calls against Duke that played a role in last nite's outcome. The fix was clearly on. The zebras WERE NOT going to let Duke win that game.

I love and will not stop loving Duke coach Mike Elko. The man should be 6-1 right now in a world without corruption.

However something is going on. Two weeks in a row Duke has been beaten by ACC officials. I have watched Duke football close to sixty years. I know when the fix is in.

I agree I have never been so mad at officiating as last night. The roughing the passer call was awful. The illegal motion was a good call and it hurt us. We make the first down and it's over.

I am crushed this morning but I am so proud of our Duke football team and coaches. It was an imperfectly played game, from the coaches on down, but when I was ready to give up at 31-21, our team kept fighting.

The reffing was uneven. I thought there were two holding calls against the Cheaters that were iffy, and the second fumble was a 50-50 call. But the push-off on the last touchdown play was totally missed by the ref who was right there. Would UNX still have scored? Perhaps, but that leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The crack back call seemed questionable to me but I don't know enough about the technicalities of football to know if that was the right call. Seemed to me the second blocker hit him at the waist which should be OK but like I said, I am not an expert.

So we have a team that is a couple of plays and a couple of calls from being 6-1. Does the team learn how to play through the calls and make the winning plays and win 2-3 more games, or do they continue in the same way and end up with a lot of "what ifs"? I have tremendous confidence in this coaching staff. This is Elko's first head coaching job and he is feeling his way but I think they can make the adjustments needed to get 2 more wins. That would be a major achievement and it's right there for the taking. Go Duke!

Oh and one more thing. #11 killed us. Was this the result of not double teaming him, or as usual are our DB's too small? I have said for a long time that our short DBs have no chance on the 50-50 balls and that's what killed us last night. That's just a case of being outmanned.

I think you’re on to something. Our DB’s are fast, and largely tackle well, but they are consistently outgunned on 50-50 balls. WR’s are getting bigger and stronger every year, so small DB’s are going to be obsolete soon.

The officiating last night was absolutely awful. So many bad calls, especially at the end. The illegal touch of the kick, when the defender was pushed into the receiver and ball, was ludicrous. The failure to call pass interference or holding on our last drive. As Liftee said, the push-off in the end zone for Carolina’s last TD not being called. Hell, even one call they ultimately got right (Carter’s fumble recovery), was blown, as the way officials are instructed to call that play is to let the play go on as though it’s a fumble, then review it and call it an incomplete pass if that’s what it turned out to be. Carter was ready to go off to the races and possibly score, but the play was blown dead. That drive ended without a score….

Still very proud of the boys for not giving up - certainly last year’s team would have folded, maybe even right after the first play for a 53 yard completion. I’m not worried about them giving up - bowl eligibility is still very reachable.

BTW, the crowd atmosphere was the best I’ve ever seen at Wallace Wade. Full house, student body sections full and rocking, gorgeous night weather-wise - but for the outcome, a great night of football.

It hurts to much for me to even talk about. I guess I take losing to a cheating program to hard. OFC
No,I am right there with you Sky. I am the same way. It's a combination of "losing to a cheating program," and the very bizarre nature of calls along the way(especially at the end). Unfortunately, "you can't beat city hall." City Hall has and always will run thru Cheater Hill.

I'd like to see the replay of the chop block. I might have been so pissed off I missed the replay.
A Duke insider I talked to last evening told me it was a "blatantly horrible call." I would suggest you NOT rewatch king, as it will make you more "pissed off." We must refocus now to Miami because we can win the game. If we're still replaying the Carolina game in our minds we'll get blitzed.

so we got a commitment from a '23 long snapper named Jake Ronillo. i dont know how they rate these guys but he is a 5 star snapper rated #7 in the nation. considering the issues we have had with the snaps this year i have to say i am a fan of this. i dont know if he is a grey shirt, pwo or a full scholly but considering the bad snap helped us lose the unc game i just want improvement down the road. conor can probably straighten out the scholly question.

ps read on another site where they had another snapper in camp this weekend but when he saw this kid he knew that duke was not in his future. says a lot about our new recruit i think.

5-star, No. 7 in the nation -- I would almost guarantee he's a scholarship guy. The long-snapper they have is a grad transfer and, all jokes aside about it being a position you don't notice until it's a problem ... it's been an issue.

Scholarship situation on the whole is going to be wild to figure out for every team. Sometime quickly after the Wake Forest game, I think, Elko will have conversations with all of the fourth- and fifth-year guys who have extra seasons about whether they're coming back or not. I doubt this staff wants an early reputation for greyshirting and they've got 27 commits now ... so I'd start preparing to see some names of contributors pop up in the portal who might get told something along the lines of, "you're welcome to come back, just know that you're not guaranteed to have the same role."

Q&A on Miami ahead of Saturday's game. (free)

Also in case you're interested ... Duke's next game will be at BC and they play at Wake this week. Their publisher did a fantastic job on this Q&A, if you want to read up about Duke's next opponent.

That's a really honest assessment of his own team.

My feeling is that Duke's offensive line is starting to bring a level of physicality that could dominate the game. I can't believe MIami's offense is nearly as strong as the Cheaters and if we can get a few stops, we may be able to outscore them.

Of course if we don't continue to win the turnover battle that would be a problem.

Thanks Conor. It is a hard game to call. Now that Ga Tech lost to UVA, it makes me scratch my head how Duke could have been dominated for 3 periods.

in answer to Hart's question, Cut probably feels his recruited players were a year away. Of course we know that that year was never going to come. I think the Administration waited a year too long.

Wonder how Cutcliffe feels about Elko overachieving with his holdovers??? Hmmm.

Knowing the integrity of Coach Cut I feel his is pleased. Despite his later failure as Duke's coach he is a man of high charactor not like some of his counter parts at cheater u butch davis and now mack brown. I really wish Coach Cut well. He got Duke back to where we are respectable. He just hung around to long and todays game past him by just as a lot of things have past me by. I will always hold Coach Cut in high regard and he will always have a soft spot in my heart for him. Hart I do understand that all Duke fans do not look at things as I do and I respect that. My wish is that in three to five years Duke football fans still hold Coach Elko in high regard as we do now. OFC

I think this game is maybe the most important of the year. For many years we have seen Duke’s football team fade after 5 or 6 games and start to get blown out . If Duke can make this a competitive game for 4 quarters I will believe they have taken a large step forward in the program. Hoping for a 27-24 Duke upset in South Beach.

Liftee we did wait a year too long. More specifically, Kevin White was our AD a year too long.

Sky I respect your opinions, always! Cut just got more stubborn with each passing day, refusing to junk a dusty old offensive playbook. He also refused to hire competent asst coaches generally, and refused to fire incompetent assts. The best thing about Duke football last year was Cut's buyout. The 2nd best was the hiring of Coach Elko.I will not change feelings about Elko-hes our smartest coach since Spurrier.

Agree hoops. This is yet another game we can win if we execute for 4 quarters. OFC
Good preview Conor. Sounds like the rubber meets the road tomorrow. Our solid rushing attack vs their ability to stop the run.

I am thinking they stack the box and force Duke to throw to move the ball. Hopefully Riley is on target tomorrow, and it opens up running lanes.

Any inkling on Coleman's status?? He warmed up last week, but we still haven't seen him since UVA. I get the feeling Elko will hold him out until after the bye week, and try to play him down the final four game stretch. OFC

Coach Cut is gone. He's our age. I just say let him be and let's move on with Coach Elko .OFC

Big conference with today Duue winning over Miami 45-21. With a couple of breaks over the last two weeks we could be 3-0 in the conference and 6-1 overall. Definately headed in the right direction and can see a couple of more possible wins the next of the regular season. OFC.

Sky we're 2-2 in the ACC. If it weren't for the zebras we'd be 4-0 in the Coastal and 7-1 overall!!! This team is "resilient" like Coach Elko says. We bounced back from two heartbreakers, and kicked some Hurricane @$$ today in their backyard. Duke ended the game scoring 28 UNANSWERED POINTS!!!! It's CELEBRATION TIME for this Duke team, after entering the game as a 10 point underdog!!!
