Season ending thoughts

I just want to say I’m proud of this Duke team for getting to the Elite 8. I’d felt more comfortable it we weren’t playing a team of destiny (NC State), but I’m proud of Coach Scheyer in his second season. We won 27 games again with no true center and Mark and Flip having off season surgery. Losing Foster later in the season certainly hurt as well but will be used as fuel for motivation for next season. I like the pieces we have coming in and will be interesting to see who stays and who we get in the portal. I like the direction of the program and think we are on a path to greatness.

Rolling into a Sunday showdown is our beloved Duke blue devils ready to take on an unlikely foe the Nc state Wolfpack.. the ultimate rubber match with the final four on the line- Duke is currently a 6.5 point favorite but nothing feels safe with the roll state has been on.

I feel confident that the “right” Duke team shows up for this game but state is on such a crazy run you have to wonder if they are just a team of destiny.. hopefully not and they are super content with the run they have had. I think we have a big time win, get revenge, get Jon to final four number 1 AND show Duke players that staying around an extra year can be worth it!

Can this team be a contender?

At this point very few have stepped up with their play to be on the court more, so Jon keeps rotating guys in and out. So in turn, we don't have a good flow. Power, Stewart, Mitchell, and Reeves (little faith in him though) have got to step up and help Flip. Young is smart, but is really limited. It also hurts when he has more fouls than points, while doing it in only 9 minutes.

I love the effort McCain plays with, but he has to start making shots. Foster hasn't found his either, but I like both of them though. Roach is doing what most of us thought he would do so far, and right now he's the only guard that is scoring when attacking the basket. We need the Proctor that we watched toward the end of last season, especially against Tennessee. The Proctor we have right now will lead Duke nowhere if he continues to play 30+ minutes a game.

I think everyone agrees that Flip is our best player. Right now I say he's good. He will be a superstar if he'd quit this whining at the refs, falling down, and committing silly fouls/turnovers. He can't start a game against solid teams with 2 fouls in the first 5 minutes.

Right now, I think we are a first weekend team. They have to get tougher. If Proctor and Flip start leading better, the others will follow.

Purdue vs Tenn game day thread

Since I would feel stupid naming a thread “elite eight day two” with just one game outside of our own we’ll just roll with this-

Purdue is dang good and playing well.. they played back in November and Purdue won by 4. I think this one will be the close game of the day. I want Tennessee to win regardless of our outcome (would love a flip revenge game on them) both teams have coaches that tend to chock so it could be a real interesting game

We enter the sweet 16 as a 4.5 point underdog against the undersized but bully ball expert Houston rocke…. I mean cougars. Kenpom has this as the #2 and #5 team playing each other. Yall old timers better get some rest today, some of us young folks might need to as well cuz this will prob be a rock fight!

Do we bring it? That’s the question.. I’m anxious to seeing what Duke team shows up.. if it’s good Duke I really like our chances here

ACC

Hey guys. I don't post as much as I used to but the old hats know me from yesteryear.

There's no way to spin it. The ACC, and state of NC by itself, is historically the strongest in basketball history. Growing up in Winston-Salem and going into the Marines and seeing the world made me realize a few things.

The ACC is looked at as down because of inflation. When the ACC had 9 teams or even less than 15 it wasn't so bad. But now the schedule works against us by default as having so many teams dilutes the schedule strength. When you have so many teams a few are going to be terrible. Yet as bad as they are GT still beat UNC and Duke. Let that sink in. They're not good but in another conference they may very well look much better (hypotheticals are bullshit but just using an extreme example)

Facts are facts. UNC has 6. We have 5. State has 2. Virginia has one. Maryland won one as an ACC member. GT has two final fours. Wake has a final four (being the fourth and occasionally fifth wheel in NC behind Davidson and UNCC is tough for them). Feel free to add any I am forgetting. Now Clemson is right on the doorstep...

UNCC has a Final Four and Davidson has multiple Elite Eights. App State, UNCA, UNCG and UNCW have been very strong on their respective levels over the years. It's just different in this state when it comes to basketball. Indiana gets a lot of hype but NC is underrated in HS ball and produces many players per capita at an astounding rate. We take it seriously here.

The media has been forcefeeding the Big 12 and SEC and Big Ten down our throats for years. I don't buy it. Call me crazy but the ACC always has been and until football destroys it will be the best conference top to bottom historically speaking. And Tobacco Road is the biggest reason why, the best in Big time college hoops and at the mid major level as well.

Novel over lol

Huh? Big 12 pursuing Duke

Yes the talk is out there:

“The Big XII is reportedly after Duke as it sets its sights on further conference realignment. In an attempt to continue boosting its already booming basketball resume, the league appears to be targeting a Top 5 brand in all of college hoops.

The news comes as the ACC battles affiliates Clemson and Florida State in court with both attempting to find a way out of the league in order to chase television revenue. Could a third program potentially be on its way out?

“Well-placed sources told us that the Big XII is being aggressive with ACC basketball membership and has their eyes solely set on Duke to pair with Gonzaga,” Montemayor claimed”

NCAAT - Duke-Houston | 9:40(ish), 3/29

Getting a thread up early, will have stories starting later today with leftovers from last week and a look at Houston.

Programming: I'm leaving Wednesday evening, get to Dallas late Wednesday night, and then will have all sorts of coverage from down there on Thursday and into Friday for the game. I'm stoked -- kind of randomly, I've never covered the Sweet 16. It's always been first weekend for me, and when Duke was in San Fran two years ago, I had COVID and had to catch up with them in NOLA at the Final Four.

Again want to thank you for following along ... and hopefully welcome in some new subscribers. We've got a deal going this week, 50% the first year of a subscription -- if you enjoy the coverage, tell your friends to take advantage of it! Here's the signup link if you want to pass along.
