OT: Sports trivia part 2.

Wasn’t Groat. I did read Groat often wondered if he picked the wrong sport.
He thought basketball was more of a team sport than baseball.
First NBA player was Bob Gantt. He played 1 year for Red Auerbach in mid 40’s.
Went to Durham High when they had 70 game winning streak. Played 3 sports at Duke. Was All American and played in Rose Bowl in Durham. Had PAT record for many years.
Was on the cover of Look magazine as greatest athlete in the south.
Next question should be easier .
Who took a pay cut of 500.00 to take the job as new Duke basketball coach?
He left a 9k job at N.C. State for 8500.00 salary at Duke.

Vic Bubas- met him in person OFC

You are up. I am really enjoying reading about the early Duke teams. Another interesting thing about
Gantt is his dad threw a couple of no hitters for Trinity before the name change.

What pro football team's defense had a nickname that was a number? What was that number? Why was that number chosen? What relationship, if any, did it have to Duke?

The Gantt saga is really interesting....OFC

Miami had 53 defense named after Bob Matheson’s Number. Sadly he died at age 50.
One of Duke’s best linebackers ever.

AH THE 52 DEFENSE BUILT AROUND THE DOLPHINS BOB MATHESON (LB) WHO STARRED AT DUKE! OFC

Played 3 sports at Duke. He batted over 400 in baseball. First 2 times he touched the ball playing lonesome end in football he scored on a 60 and 40 yd td pass versus Notre Dame. The Irish then triple teamed him. He set 6 world records in track. At age 35 he entered a local 100 yard race in Miami thinking it was for over 30 yr olds. He won running a 9.6. He set 6 world records in track. He was voted top Duke athlete in 20th century. He has a pretty famous grandson who won the Heisman. As a doctor he operated on Mickey Mantle, Richard Nixon, Ted Williams and Bob Griese.

You got it. I believe he is the greatest athlete to ever play at Duke. He turned down 23 scholarships and a 65k bonus to play baseball for the Giants before accepting baseball scholarship at Duke. Fastest man on earth in 1950’s. CIA recruited him to get Russian weightlifter to
defect at 1960 Olympics in Rome.Did not work. His injury probably kept him from winning 100 and 200 yd gold metals in 1956.

I agree with you about being such a great athlete. I'm pretty sure that Billy McCaffrey and Fran McCaffery are related also but not sure how. Christian is a really good athlete also. OFC

Sticking to Dave Sime. Sime was drafted into the NFL in the 39th round but opted for med school What NFL team drafted him? Just a note about Sime. A lot of Duke athletes of long ago are soon being forgotten. Dave is just one of many. Here is Dukie that was an Olympic silver medalist, all around athlete who more than likely could have played two professional sports especialay baseball and been fairly succesful. He chose to be a surgeon and a great one at that. Thank you acc hoops for that question. OFC

Detroit drafted him. Rumor has it UNC wanted to see him run the bases and mishandled ground balls on purpose to watch him run. His first world record was in 220 meter hurdles. His times in 3 running events were several seconds faster than Jesse Owens in 1936 olympics.

I have to check on that.
The Duke Encyclopedia may be wrong!
Just looked it up. Hurt was in last recruiting class for Bradley in 1959.

It's getting close to Little League World Series time. I don't recall a LLWS question ask before. I don't know about the rest of you but I'must a big fan . In 1982 a team from Kirkland, Washington upset Taiwan who had been rolling over the competition. Kirkland had a pitcher that day pitch a 6-0 shutout . Name the pitcher. OFC

I'm gonna give some time. Surely there are some LLWS guys out there. This kid got a lot of attention because the U.S. team had not been succesful for a while. The Asian teams and Latino teams had began to dominate the LLWS. This kid was big for his age. Blond hair. OFC

I want someone to get the answer. Hint one. His 1st name is the 1st name of a member of the Charlotte Hornets who had a brother that played at unc cheater u and got caught running a gigantic spider Web while playing Duke one time. OFC
