Coach K: Olympics in Rio will be his last as USA coach

I wish he would coach Team USA forever. It's been a fun time to watch Team USA look like a well run organization again. Especially after the train wreck that it was before Coleangelo and K came onto the scene.

Now the playing field has just been evened out for North Carolina. Watch out for Carolina in 2018. I mean make that 2020. Brad Stevens should be the next Team USA head coach.

I would like to see Stevens (my second favorite coach in sports) coaching our national team but i doubt it will happen.

K has mentioned a number of times, the reason it is beneficial to have a college coach that is well respected as the national team coach is because there is no conflict of interest. As an NBA coach there is. Having said that, not sure what college coach they'd like to be that guy right now, perhaps a kevin ollie type of guy. Think Billy Donovan would have been (still might be) a great fit though- young, has int'l experience, etc.

Also, timo, I would think there is an inherent timing issue with pro coaches, especially those that make deep playoff runs. Don't the playoffs run until the end of June? Would that not create a timing issue for some coaches?

K said, "There has to be a succession ... a planned succession with really good people so we can keep the continuity of the program going.''

Dadgummit, there goes Ol' Roy's chance of coaching them.

OFC

That will be the next conspiracy. K set up the succession, K controls the succession, so it's really just K forever and that's why certain guys don't get a chance. He's one cunning guy.

Who do you folks think the "successor" will be? Right now I'm going with Sean Miller, but that's just off the top of my head. A Dukie like Amaker or Dawkins or Wojo or Collins would give too much credence to the conspiracy theorists. And it better not be Cal. Pitino's already shot himself in the foot, and Ol' Roy's foot was shot a long time ago. Bill Self? Mark Few? Anyone?
(Yes, I know. It's way early).

The only one on that list that would have any sort of remote chance would be Bill Self. I'm going to say Billy Donovan, but again it's way to early to know.

How's that song go? "Don't know whatcha got, til its gone."

Careful what you ask for....

Can you imagine the pressure the next coach will feel? Everyone thinks its an easy job until you get it. The first coach to lose will get filleted. As a side note, that will only help Coach K and Duke Basketball's mystique.

Hope Roy gets the job. Hope Calipari gets the job. Hope Bo Ryan gets a crack at it. Its basically a paid vacation, with lots of red, white, and blue gear and a never-ending pipeline of 5* recruits. Heck, I should put my name in the hat.

I just hope that HOF Coach Roy Williams doesn't turn the job down this time. How many times is it now 5 or 6 ? The main reason I want him to have the job is so we don't have to hear Tar Heel nation whining about how the job wins Duke national championships and all the top notch recruits. OFC

I have now read that K said the "successor" should be someone with international experience. Well, guess who the last two USA Basketball U-19 coaches were...that's right...Sean Miller and Billy Donovan! You and I are both brilliant, Timo!

Out of curiosity, how much interaction does K have with the youth teams?

CBS Sports lists Popovich, Cal, Rick Carlisle, Doc Rivers, Sean Miller, and Billy Donovan as possible successors. Frankly, I don't think they know any more than we do, which is nothing. But it's fun to guess. Anyway, this thread will be long dead before we find out the winner.

I guess they are tired of asking HOF Coach Roy Williams to take the job. He's turned them down so many times. If Miller gets the job then it looks like Arizona will be getting all he the top notch recruits. OFC

One of the UNCheat loonies said something about K coaching until he was 100 and propped up on the bench dead like Weekend at Bernie's but still coaching. I thought that was pretty funny from a Heel.

Yeah they can come up with some funny stuff. Mike Irby said something like that Henson should have told them he was a friend of Lance Thomas. That's pretty funny. OFC

As a Kentucky fan, there has never been any love for Duke or Coach K in the college ranks. But....I admire, respect and absolutely appreciate the great job he's done with USA Basketball. And yes, his shoes with the national team will be very very hard to fill.

See that is very reasonable. K has done a fine job, and it is not all about being the coach. There is a reason why team USA and Coleangelo lobby to have him back as coach every year. With that said if it was Calipari coaching team USA, I would throw my full support behind him to succeed. The position is coach of OUR national team. IMO it is country first. Petty dislikes of rival college (and coaches) is a juvenile way to not support your fellow countrymen.

Thought I read somewhere that Colangelo stated the successor to K would almost certainly be an NBA coach. I thought that was interesting.

Irby did score a funny one with that!

Popovich, Doc or Billy D, although Donovan would say he's coaching, but at midnight the next night, he'll back out last minute and change his mind.
