Can someone explain what is going on here? We can all see that K has at times been unhappy with Johnson’s play and effort, and I am sure he is trying to get the best out of him. At the same time, numbers don’t lie, and arguably the most complete offensive player at Duke since Grant Hill is playing 23 minutes per game on a team not exactly loaded with talent. Since the Coppin State opener, Johnson has played more than 28 minutes once, and most games 24 minutes or less. Foul trouble isn’t the explanation—he has hard more than 3 fouls just twice, including fouling out of the Pitt game, the only one since Coppin St where he played over 30 minutes. Here are Johnson’s per 40 minute numbers: 21.2 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.0 steals, 2.4 blocks. Grant’s by comparison were 19.6, 7.8, 4.7, 2.2 and 1.4. Johnson does turn it over too much-4.5 per 40 minutes, but some of that is a function of high usage when he’s in the game—Grant was just a bit better at 3.3 turnovers per 40 minutes. Anyone with any insights?
