Can we talk Kansas?

we gotta hit some 3's. sounds simple but it will open everything else up. Baker will get his chance. And Hurt has a nice stroke.

I’m just curious to know why y’all think we will allow their bigs to just get the ball in the post and go to work. Our ball pressure will take them out of their half court sets majority of the game. Azubuike has conditioning problems and is very slow. This type of game against a big that will make him move on defense is definitely going to tire him out. Like you said there’s no guard depth. Do you think they’ll be able to handle that continuous pressure? If we lose it won’t be because the big men or dominating us. We’ll lose if they pack the paint and we have a bad shooting night. They aren’t that good. I don’t see it

First, you clearly didn’t read my post, because not only did I never mention their bigs “dominating” us, but I clearly stated the way Duke wins is if they take the bigs out of the game.

The problem with that gameplan, is that if their bigs are pulled out of the game early because of fouls, they’ll have plenty of rest in the second. By that point, if our bigs are playing well, and I think they will early, I worry their energy will run out by game’s end (see: UConn ‘04 for precedent).

Kansas’s strength is their interior. Bill Self will do everything he can to make sure his bigs can make an impact. I think Duke will take them out early, but like I said before and if you care to read this time, if their guards can help keep it close, the bigs will help win the game down the stretch. Not a blowout, not a domination.

Man how nice would it have been to have Vrank for a 5th year? Just one more big body. If Javin and Carey are in foul trouble can Jack play the 5 at a high level?

Nothing in this game will surprise me. I feel like they will not win, but give Coach K a game like this and time to prepare and I will not be surprised if they win. We have witnessed a ton of wins in November when we didn’t think our Devils had a prayer.

GO DUKE!!!!

I think Jack is strong enough to body DeSouza and McCormack. Azubuike is a different animal because of his strength and ridiculous length. Javin may end up being the one to give Azubuike trouble because of his athleticism. It won’t be easy though.

No matter the result, a good early test against what will be a National Championship contender will give the team an idea of what it is going to take to win it all. As long as your last game isnt a lost....the season is a success.

When I say y’all that means more than one. I just chose you to reply to but I referring to many others that keeps bringing up their bigs. Once again their bigs are nothing special. They have one big that can make an impact but he has conditioning and fouling problems. Plus he can’t shoot free throws. So in a close game he’s not someone that’s going to scare us. Just hack him. McCormick and De Sosa definitely aren’t guys we have to worry about taking over either. They may play good but at no point will we be watching the game and say those two are really hurting us.

you’re not making sense when you say we will take them out early. If we take them out early that means they’re probably in foul trouble. Meaning in the second half they will still be in foul trouble and won’t play as aggressive. Or maybe you mean something else when you say take them out. Do you mean take them out of what they want to do? Then my question would be why would we take them out of it then go away from it in the end? We aren’t playing any big over 25 minutes a game anyway so energy won’t be an excuse.

I recall UConn being the game the refs got our big men out of there. We had 3 bigs foul out. Had a lot to do with just outright cheating.

Maybe I need to go back and watch Kansas big men play because I just don’t see what you see and how you say the bigs will win the game down the stretch. Also they’re guards aren’t really special either. If anything this is a pick em game. Anybody that just come straight out acting like Kansas no doubt got this is looking at a different team

Yeah you probably do. If you think our bigs are good enough to just outplay them, you’re mistaken. They are #3 for a reason and it’s not because of Devan Dotson.

And yes, take their bigs out early is a combo of getting Azubuike in foul trouble (and maybe even DeSouza) and taking them out of their game plan. What typically happens early in these games is a guy like Azubuike gets 2 fouls early and the coach sits him for a good 10-12 minute stretch. That’s enough time for Duke to build on something.

Upon his return in the second half, if he has 2 or 3, he’ll usually play smarter on D, but will play more aggressive on O or D because at that point he has plenty of energy from sitting. The same thing happened with Okafor. Did the refs cheat? I guess we could play that game, but ultimately, Shelden was worn out then fouled out, Shav fouled out and we were left backups to the backups trying to play a fresh All-American.

It’s going to be so easy to just take them out of what they do, especially if the whistles are tight which I expect them to be. The guards will have to play tough D and I wouldn’t be surprised to see our press. But that will only get us so far.

We have to play a brilliant game to win. Azubuike and Agbaji are monsters. They are just going to lay down.

Our backcourt should very stout defensively. Dotson, Garrett and Ochai are all plus
Defenders and Garrett is elite. Dok is a elite defender if the 5 man is a true 5 man. Obviously a stretch 5 could cause problems.

Our question is; how does our 4 man matchup defensively which will be DeSousa. By the years end DeSousa will be a beast on offense but right now he will be an elite rebounder and score a ton in the pain off our backs and dunks.

I think why people are so high on Kansas is people expect Ochai and Dotson to take that next step. Ochai has AA potential. Not saying he will be a AA but he has it in him whether it’s this year or next.

You all are well schooled on Dok but don’t sleep on McCormack and DeSousa. They are still developing but are still very good players. All 3 of our posts are beasts physically. Talented too. But young and inexperienced other than Dok.

KU should be very, very good defensively and very efficient shooting a high 2pt FG %. Shooting the 3 Is the question mark.

Dotson and Ochai just need to be consistent. They both can shoot it at a high %. Isaiah Moss is a 3pt specialist and is a high % 3pt shooter. He will be our first guard off the bench. Christian Braun (pronounced “brown” lol) will the be the other guard who is a freshman but plays like a senior. He can light it up but will only take open looks.

Garrett has to improve and his shot looks improved. Last year people literally didn’t guard him lol.

ku sucked last year because Lawson was our only big man but he is not a traditional ku big man. We had no shooters and we had no post man who is a actual post man. We were the #1 team in the country with some highly impressive wins until Dok. We hadn’t lost and looked legit. This years team will look like that but be better defensively and be a better shooting team.

it’s a early season game. While we have experience we do have some youth that will quickly turn to experience as the season progresses. KU fans are very very excited about this years team. As always hope both teams have a healthy season and have the chance to be the best they can be.

I’m interested to see Dotson vs Jones; Dok vs Carey and the DeSousa vs Hurt. Should be some fun matchups.

I forgot about Robinson. He could fill in inside for a few minutes. 6-9 and long arms. If our frontline can hold their own against them we will win. But that might be a tall order as we are young. Although Javin and Jack provide stability. I think it will be an ugly, physical game.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but Carey is not a bad 3 point shooter and there’s no way Azubuike is gonna be able to guard him out there. If Carey is able to score outside the post it should not only open up our offense but perhaps force Kansas to make personnel changes on defense.

I am a little surprised the early line has us as a 2.5 favorite... my guess is because the game is at MSG. I think it’s going to be a great Game! Win or lose this will be a game that will help this team grow as the season goes on.

It's because Kansas isn't who people think they are. They struggle shooting the ball just like us. We should be the favorites because of coaching. They have some depth in the post but we are a pressure team so we will make their guards (no depth) work hard for 40 minutes

When they go with Lightfoot we can go with Jack or Justin. All 3 are about even. We won't be at a disadvantage

Soooooo you're saying you will be a much better team than the team you had last year when they were ranked number one? You do realize your best player by far from last year is gone right? He was your playmaker if I can recall. Y'all played through Lawson even before Dok got hurt. Come on man. You think y'all are a better shooting team but there's no proof of it. We assumed Tre would be a better shooter but guess what...he's not. And like I said you lost your big time playmaker.

Jesus, I did not realize the game was this Tuesday. Man, the season really crept up on me. I cannot stomach losing to these guys for another time, really hoping we can pull this one out.

Man oh man. They're #3 for a reason huh? Last year I recall Kentucky being #1 for a reason as well. It's preseason polls. All speculation. They are assuming that players will automatically take a big jump. Agbaji is a monster? WHAT? Azubuike is a beast in the post. I give you that. But he doesn't have shooters around him and he's not someone that can pass out of the double team. He should be doubled every time he gets the ball. DeSosa is not someone that's going to hurt you generating offense on his own. He's someone that's effective in the dunker spot and getting some rebounds. We just have to have all 5 crash the boards.

I have no idea what UConn game you watched. When we played them in 04, Sheldon Williams only played 19 minutes in the game. Okafor had 6 points up until the point where he scored 12 against Horvath and the small lineup we had to use after Horvath fouled out. He literally did nothing against our big men. So I don't know what you're talking about. You are definitely mistaking.

You do know that if Azubuike is in foul trouble we will continue to attack him the same way we did earlier with Carey? He can't move when he's away from the basket. Play smarter? Why wouldn't he play smart defense from the jump knowing they need him? He is who he is. He won't play smarter. He is a mauler. Don't give me DeSosa and McCormick. I'm sure Javin and Hurt can play with them. This is a pick em game. We don't have to play brilliant. You act like they're a proven elite team. They just have a few more experienced bigs. And they aren't as experienced as you make them out to be

I guess we will see
Dok is our best player. Not Lawson. Our team structure is so much better this year. Our guard play will be improved naturally. Not saying we are some all time great team. We will be significantly better than last years team that ended the season without Dok and will be better than the team that was undefeated ranked #1

Man OH Man, you have a goldfish’s memory bro. If you can stomach it, go watch the UConn game again. They even talk about how gassed Duke’s bigs were. Oh well.

Look arguing with you is like chasing the end of a rainbow. It’s exhausting and you’ll never get anywhere. So I’m done.

On our podcast, I pick Duke to win. I think we can cause havoc with guards. But if KU can get to their bigs, we’re in trouble. And you’re grossly underestimating Agbaji. Win or lose, you’ll come away with some respect for the dude after this game.

Yeah Agbaji is legit and he'll easily fill the void left by Lawson. Agbaji, DeSousa or McCormack and Azubuike is probably the best frontcourt in the country. So not only are we going up against an elite frontcourt but we'll be doing it primarily with freshmen. Going to be a tough matchup. It will be interesting to see how the guys handle it. I will be impressed and feeling good about the team if we compete well, look like we belong, and push KU, hopefully being in the game until the end. This game will tell us a lot about where the team is right now and their potential.

I absolutely think we will compete. I think we lead for at least 30 minutes. How we handle the last 10 will be telling. Either way, our team is going to look better than they did against NW Mizzou.

Both Carey and DeLaurier have to stay out of foul trouble. If our front court is Hurt and White halfway through the second half we're in trouble.

And we have to hit some shots. Have to. C'mon AOC and Baker!
