OT: Sports trivia part 2.

We know who the last Duke football player to play in the majors was Quinton McCracken. Who was the last Duke football player to play in the majors before him?

We have a winner. Hard to get one past Hart2.

Dukeman I appreciate the very kind words my friend!! However when you are old as I am and you've followed one team your whole life.....I just wish I could remember what I had for dinner last nite.

Bobby obviously was an excellent baseball player, but also served as a very able running back for the Blue Devils. If memory serves, Bobby ran for over 100 yards in an excruciatingly tough loss at UNC in '78, 16-15. That was head coach Mike McGee's final Duke game, and Dukeman mentioned Red Wilson who indeed took over after McGee was let go.

Speaking of Red Wilson, how many winning seasons did he have at Duke during his 4 year tenure prior to his termination? OFC

Hart I’m right there with you on that old age thing.

As for Red Wilson, imagine a Duke football coach having back to back winning season’s and being fired? If I remember correctly he was fired after defeating the Cheats?

I was REALLY angry with our AD Tom Butters after that move! You're right we had just closed the year with a 23-17 win over The Cheats. At Butters announcement presser after he terminated Red, he opened it by saying;"I will not respond to any questions as to why I fired him." Burned me up.They bumped Red to Duke Hospital in an administrative role....OFC

Since I'm from the Elon area and was familiar with Red because I had a couple of friends that played for him at Elon is that Red didn't fit the description of a Duke coach with some of the heavy paying boosters at the time. In other words he was considered a country bumpkin or too southern good ole boy. He didn't sound enough like a distinguished head coach should sound like. At least that was the word coming out from the area here. Don't know if that was true or not. The thing about Red was that he surrounded himself with good assistants which he let them coach. He was successful at Elon in doing that. I really don't think Red was fired for not winning but just not fitting in. OFC

I’m with you Hart on that Red Wilson firing. I didn’t understand it either.

It was Red that gave a young man his first coaching job as an offensive coordinator. That young man is affectionately known today as the Ol Ball Coach.

Phil, that is the same story I heard about Red’s firing. I believe Red is still living and in his 90’s.

Both of you are spot on on your posts....Boosters wanted somebody in there who would speak more eloquently as Sky noted.Be danged if Red had back to back winning seasons ( seasons again good enough for bowls now!), he was viewed as a bumpkin by some VERY ARROGANT HIGH DOLLAR DONORS. Steve Sloan was disappointing after Red, and resigned to take an AD job (which he was much better suited!)

Our offense sure got untracked Red's 6-5 seasons with Red head coach, Spurrier (Dukeman noted) as OC and Ben Bennett at qb!We could flat out light up the scoreboard!
We truly lived up to the biiling, #RedMeansGo

I should know this. I remember some of his staff. Mickey Brown, Sam Story and Richard McGeorge along with Steve Spurrier but I don't think any of them were the D.C. OFC

I should know too Sky!! I remember names you mentioned too...OFC

Is it an assistant that Red brought from Elon? I don’t have a clue to the answer. Sam Story, Mickey Brown, Rich McGeorge, and Jim Collins all with Elon ties. Figured if the DH was
from there Sky might know the answer.

I think we should uncle this one. It's been more than two days and the standard time for an answer is 24 hours. Good job Devilinside. You are up. OFC
