Just when you thought Duke was a bad 3-point shooting team...

I don't have a KenPom account either so I can't access 2020 3 pt efficiency stats.

What I do know...the 2001 Duke team was the best college three point shooting team I have ever watched, and that team was 38.5% on the season. They made 10.4 three's a game, that is sick.

I think it helps to have great outside shooting, but during the mid to late 2000’s we had great shooting but couldn’t get past the Sweet 16 all of those years. I’d rather carry a great defense into the tournament than a great 3 point shooting team. Hell, look at the kid from Wofford last season that went 0-11 against Kentucky in the second round (Flether McGee. Wasn’t he the best 3 point shooter last year? And we all remember what happened to JJ in ‘06).

Shooting doesn’t travel as well as defense. I would still like some capable 3 point shooters, don’t get me wrong. IIRC, no champion has ever won an NCAA title while shooting below 30% from 3. I think that’s the correct stat. If so, as long as we stay north of 30, I’m good.

The other *positive* about our 30.4% from 3 is that we are holding our opponents to 29.8% from 3.

This was similar to last year’s team.

Q do you think it has anything to do with moving back the 3 point line or veryou little . OFC

We need to be competent knocking down open 3s. Jack, Alex, and at least one other. We dont have to make a ton of well defended, high pressure, ridiculous 3s, like last years Auburn/UVA game. We need to knock down open looks.

This season looks like (at this moment) like 2011 when there were no dominant teams and it was an ugly Final Four, etc. where a team like Duke could win it all without shooting it well from 3 like that UCONN team.

^This. And I agree Q, I would much rather ride a really good defensive team into the Tournament. But I will say this, I believe that Duke will be a very good shooting team as the Tourney nears, maybe even before.

Go Duke!

Just did some research. The worst 3 point shooting team to win a title (since 99-00) was UCONN in 2011. They shot 32.9 % for the year and actually shot it worse in the tournament at 31.2%.

All 3 of Duke championship teams since 2000 have shot atleast 38% from 3.

As of today, we are shooting 35% from 3, so we’re safely in as a title contender, although our title teams have shot 38% or higher since 2000.

I think as our young guys get more experience and even more confidence, our 3 point shooting should get better (it's fine now, but still room for improvement.)

Hurt is IMO the biggest X-factor offensively, he has the potential to score more, and obviously to hit more 3's, if he can just get stronger, that should really help our offense.
Moore is the other guy, I don't think he's gonna ever be a great shooter, but if he can stop turning it over and continue to go strong to the hole, that should give our shooters more open looks.

Everyone else I think is on par right now with where they should be. Other than Alex, who I'm praying finds his stroke but it wouldn't shock me if he's not in the March rotation. Oh, and lets all say a prayer that Jack doesn't have a shooting slump like last year.
