duke football news

Thank you Conor for your predications.

I'm sure you will get some ridicule for putting Duke so high.

One question--what does Pitt have that makes you put it ahead of Duke?

I can take ridicule as long as it doesn't get personal. I love how complete Duke's roster is and think the offense will be awesome.

Bullet points on Pitt:

- Schedule is much easier than Duke's. Play FSU and UNC at home, only tough ACC road game probably Duke (and that's Thanksgiving weekend.

- I really like Phil Jurkovec when healthy. Not as good as Riley but closer than he gets credit for.

- They lose a lot on defense but they've been so consistent in finding replacements on that side of the ball it's hard to see them struggling that much defensively. I *think* Duke's defense will be better; just have more faith in Pitt's because of track record.

A couple of programming notes to make sure you're aware of:

- Duke's first practice is Friday night -- teams can start a month before their first games, so Duke and Clemson get the latest start possible.

- Riley Leonard was named to the Maxwell Award watch list today (goes to top player in the country). You won't see me making a huge deal out of every watch list that comes out ... but it's on my mind now, so I'll throw it in here.

Not going to write a separate story on this but here's the info on preseason All-ACC team:

so a couple of nice tidbits

jeremiah lewis CB 6' 180lbs who played 4 years at duke then transferred to northwestern and started last year has transferred back to duke to play his 6th and final year.

dolphins are signing mark gilbert CB who led the USFL in int's this year. really happy for him
When he entered the portal, I had a thought of, "huh, he could help Duke but I don't what terms he left on and whether he'd want to rejoin."

Asked and answered.

Conor, any news on the football practices? I’m counting down the days to our “upset” over Clemson!
Unfortunately haven't been out there since the first night -- not every practice is open to media, like last year -- but will see them practice 3 times in the next 5 days, starting tomorrow.

So stories will be forthcoming!

Tough news today -- will have a story on this shortly, and then a practice report later.

Very disappointing to hear, we cannot seem to avoid the injury bug so far. Between Pickett, Simmons, and now Pancol, we may need to wrap everyone else in bubble wrap the rest of the way

It's fall camp and it's football, you're bound to lose a few guys along the way. Out there today, Pickett already looked close to being back (maybe a week away).

The news sucks and I hate it for Eli because he's been gracious with us in interviews ... but WR is a position where Duke has some depth.

Certainly glad for Pickett and that's good news for us!

I am really disheartened for Eli, such a talent and really coming into his own in a modern day offense of OC Kevin Johns. When you find out Eli is such a kind person ("gracious with us in interviews") it hurts more.

It's really fortunate Duke is so deep at wideout. We still have quite a crowded WR room of capable performers.

The biggest concern I have at receiver this year is SPEED. Can the Duke receivers create the all important SEPARATION from speedy dbs of elite teams we play??

That will tell the tale, as well if Riley gets enough time to throw against quicker pass rushers on our tough schedule. We'll begin to find out in 23 days, in what will be an acid test.

Story on Eli Pancol.

Included is who could have an increased role. I think Jontavis Robertson and Malik Bowen-Sims are fine; I'm intrigued to watch Mehki Wall and Spencer Jones.
Elko also mentioned freshman Apollos Cook. He enrolled early and caught a long TD pass in one of the spring scrimmages—spring game, perhaps-- from Grayson Loftis. Of course, I think they were playing against backups, maybe walk-ons. But still I would like one or more of the freshmen to leap frog Robertson and/or Bowen-Sims. Next man. up and all that,

Key word missing in that story (my bad) and it's been updated.

Duke's goal is to have 6 playable receivers.

So you figure they're at 5 now. Bowen-Sims is the only size (and 6-2 isn't *that* big, at least as far as P5 WRs go), so I tend to think he's solid in there. Robertson always feels like he's a week away from becoming decent but consistency has been an issue.

I liked what I saw from Apollos Cook in the spring but I don't think he's sustained it to fall camp. It's early and there's plenty of time to prove me wrong; it's also possible I haven't seen his good days (have been to 2.5 of 6 practices).

Malik Bowen-Sims has 10 career receptions in three seasons. When I think of Robertson the first thing I think of is the dropped TD pass against Pitt. Or maybe it's the two penalties that helped cost Duke the GT game last season.

Next man up and all that and I would love for either or both to take this opportunity and go with it. But I also wonder if some younger options might not turn out to be better options.

Great write-up on Jordan Moore. As far as we know, Jordan did not complain at all about moving positions and he made some amazing catches last year with virtually no preseason training for the position.

I am expecting big things from Jordan this year with his greater experience and preparation.

When Jordan’s younger brother committed to Duke, I took that as confirmation that Jordan was good with the move. Plus I’m sure any number of schools would have taken him as a transfer QB. And frankly, if he has any desire to play pro, he’s a stronger candidate at WR than QB. He seems like a class act as well.
