by “your kind,” do you mean historians? given that we have only met on a message board, i am baffled as to how you know what my “ kind” is.

Being that you're such a great historian and all why don't you school us on who came up with and designed that offensive and racist Redskin logo on Washington's helmets....

I mean I’d take it as pride too... Having an NFL team in the US with a cool ass looking mascot named after my people! Sign me up! I’d trade places with any minority in this country in a heartbeat....I’d be the next president when it’s all said and done lmao

Man, you are so dumb.

I am very aware that a member of the tribe made the logo. He has also said that while he is proud of it, if it upsets others it should not be used.

So anything in this country that upsets a faction of the caucasian community should go? If you dont agree, you're full of sh* t.

Wait, I have to ask... your allegiance is tied to the uniform, logo, and chop? Most people don't pick a sports team because of a uniform or a particular cheer... you pick and follow a sports team usually because of your experiences with the team and the players, and because certain players (or coaches) catch your interest, don't you? And none of that changes if the name changes, does it? Like... if Duke changed the sports team name to the Red Devils, would you then stop being a Duke fan because of that?
Long answer

As an immigrant I had no legacy teams passed down to me. My father was never into athletics. I chose Duke because I share the same heritage as Mr. Krzyzewski. But the BlueDevils are the only team I follow without red in their color scheme.

There is truth that all the teams I still follow to this day were competitive when I first became aware of domestic team sports in America. There is no denying that. This was during the late 1980's so only the good teams were on television. Eventually I had a Sports Illustrated subscription and video games which widened my understanding of these sports.

My close friend is a lifelong Chief fan and I have discussed this topic with him many times. The teams with Indigenous imagery were just...way cooler. They had an eye catching red color scheme, interesting logo and some sort of chant/tools to celebrate with. I discussed this with my mother a few nights ago and she stated she always viewed teams with N.American names as a celebration. These wealthy companies chose to be represented by an Indian. Although I am okay with the Redskins name change, I was personally never offended by it. Meaning the thought of someone having skin the color red wasn't an issue with me. There is a larger variety of skin color tones today than ever before. Having immigrated here with no allegiance, I never viewed skin color as a strength, weakness or slur. Maybe that was my ignorance.

Today when I close my eyes and think of the Atlanta Braves I see specific players and moments. But I also hear Atlanta Fulton County Stadium doing the CHOP.

I will add, College sports is different in that it is tied to a specific University. There is usually a-lot of history and traditions involved. I love traditions. There are a few exceptions in Professional sports but for the most part these are just mercenaries that sleep in a city a few times a week for half the year. Professional athletes increasingly have no tie to the city and/or fans. Thus I consider myself a Braves baseball fan not necessarily Atlanta. And I think that is why it would be easier to accept if Duke took on a total makeover after Coach Krzyzewski retired.

Very good points AA21. Traditions are vital to all societies and cultures. They are an integral part of the human experience. It hurts to lose/give up enen small parts of our traditions. But, if some aspect of a tradition is hurtful to another individual or group is it really such a burden to tweak that tradition so that both parties can be honored/respected. I honestly believe that we can keep the core aspects of the vast majority of our traditions without disrespecting others.

This is exactly how I feel. I don't know what is offensive to a native American. I know what is offensive to my heritage. Maybe I am overly sensitive to usage of my heritage's name. But that's me. I can understand why others would feel that way.

The Braves went from Boston to Milwaukee to Atlanta. I'm not sure what significance the name has anymore.

Welp, covid is falling flat with its lethality, so looks like Trump could win again in a few months. Looking forward to @dbav @SDevada @Jtre @Crest is Garbage all gonna be like.....

People are so weird.

The President has among the worst poll numbers in history... Biden’s lead is nearly *three times* as high as Clintons lead in the last 2016 poll, nearly fifty percent higher than Clintons largest ever lead... and in battleground states it is far worse, with his lead four times as high in some essential states as Clintons was heading into the election... and this is after many major polls adjusting to better represent people without a college education, which is a huge core of Trumps base and which wasn’t accounted for as clearly in 2016... his disapproval ratings are worse than just about any previous president at this point...and to top it off, the undecided voter has basically disappeared, which was the essential group for Trump winning in 2016.... aaand he isn’t running against the most hated major candidate in modern American politics.

... and in that election he didn’t have the baggage of pardoning criminals and failing in negotiations with Iran and North Korea and failing to contain a pandemic and the subsequent economic collapse and half a presidency golfing and massive social unrest and Russian bounties on American soldiers and countless former employees publicly calling him out and sharpie-colored maps of hurricanes and no health care deal and cancelled rallies and the myriad of other failures that he has chalked up under his presidency.

That mix of ignoring information/reality and unfounded, over the top bravado from Trump supporters, who not only see Trump winning but see him winning big, perfectly mirrors the President.

So are the yankee’s going to change their name as well now?

I mean seeing as how the term was a name used for people who fought for the union and came from up north and were not of southern heritage.

This crap is retarded .

For the sake of reasoning. “Brave or Warrior” is a title earned amongst native Americans and is a sign or respect and a right of passange among young men.

The bigger issue is that they insist on seeing the virus as a hoax and wearing masks as beneath them. We can debate all we want about who will win the election and whether Trump supporters are in denial but we will have that answer in November (hopefully). In the meantime, we have to get from here to there and that is made harder by the people who refuse to do their part to stem the rapid transmission of the virus.

I’m in North Carolina and the term is still used lol for people from up north

Getting into hypotheticals is just about getting angry.

Lots of people see Redskins as something worth changing.

Not as many think “Braves” or “Indians” is an issue.

I don’t think anyone has ever gotten upset over Yankees.

Just stick with what is happening, and be reasonable even when people are being unreasonable, and conversation will be worthwhile.
