Official game day thread- Duke va Kansas

If Evans doesn't get minutes this year he won't stay. He needs to crack the rotation. If Jon doesn't trust him this year why would he stay? I wouldn't. We have more 5 star wings coming in. But I think we will see his minutes increase after the big early games. I do think Harris is a different situation as he is not quite as highly rated as Evans is.

I'm hoping so as well. There's no reason he shouldn't be getting minutes.

Haven't watched yet, but looks like it was another extremely physical game against a really experienced and talented team. As disappointing as an L is, these games will serve the young kids well come March.

That said, if there is such a thing as the freshman "wall", Coop and Kon are going to hit it. Ridiculous minutes given the depth Duke is supposed to have. Gotta agree with those calling for Evans, Pat and Harris to get some burn. Who cares if they make mistakes in November? Doesn't make a lot of sense.

It doesn’t matter what I would have ran. I don’t understand how this is an argument you’re trying to lead with. If you can’t tell the difference with the set play under 3 seconds with the last two turn overs you’ll always have the Duke blue glasses on.
But you’ve failed to answer my question. Who do you give the ball to in the last minute to initiate some offense? Proctor ? Maybe but he wasn’t exactly attacking . Sion? They were on those two in the last minute . They knew we would run through Flag or Kon or should I say we would have to run plays through them .
If I had to run a play . I would have actually went Mal, Brown, Flag, Kon and Proctor the last minute. That’s two post defenders and rebounders who could give a put back or lob. Flag and Kon to drive the lane and Proctor on the outside . Not capitalizing on Hunter being out and continuing to miss free throws and shots cost Duke .

When does Jon learn how to run an offense?
To have the talent we have but look like our O consists of playground pickup ball is very distressing. Related to that, I think Foster is going to see more bench time. But even with him out, we still looked like we had just met each other during warmups. As Shey says, not capitalizing with Dickinson out cost us dearly. The so-called biggest team in the country couldn’t take advantage of that?

Foster looks like someone that should be playing at East Carolina not Duke. He gives NOTHING on the court, he can’t even hit fts. Our backcourt is a mess, shame coach can’t find minutes for evans/harris whose probably figuring out where they’ll be next year

Lousy to lose a close one like that against the top ranked team. I did think we showed some poise by not folding when they came out on fire. We definitely had the deer in the headlights look the first 10 mins. I really think we are lacking point guard leadership right now, and I don't think Foster is the answer. I would like to see more Sion. Kon going 0-8 from 3 is disappointing. Poor execution by Flagg and Kon on those final two possession too. IMHO, it's a one possession loss to a very good team in November. I think the Kentucky loss stings more. Had we gone 2-1 vs Kansas, Kentucky, Arizona instead of 1-2, it's a totally different perspective. A win vs Auburn would right the ship.

Duke is at once infuriating and electrifying. Flagg is an incredible player. We can only imagine what he would be like as an upper classman at Duke. He would be unstoppable. But he’s the #1 pick in all likelihood. His 3 point shot and youth are his weaknesses.

Love Malik Brown and Sion James. They were out there in crunch time for a reason.

Kon is an infuriating player. He's crafty and skilled with the ball. But the last two games he’s played he’s had so many drives that ended up as turnovers, blocked shots, or missed shots. He is just not quick enough or strong enough to go inside and win consistently against older athletic players on top tier teams. 2 out of 3 drives are basically a turnover waiting to happen (steal, block, or miss). He has to learn to drive and kick. He did that once late in the game and Proctor nailed it. And his shooting was horrible. Sion and Proctor both are able to nail 3s. Kon has to be a facilitator instead of constantly looking for his own shot. SMH. He also has limitations on D.

He put up 14 shots and no one else had double digits. That just can’t happen. Look at the Box score Scheyer! Pass the ball!

Now, the two man game with Flagg was great. Showed his ability to handle and pass (of course having Flagg and no Dickinson helped there).

Maluach didn’t seem himself. He didn’t get a lot of PT. Was his knee hurting? He just wasn’t that presence he normally is. But Brown was playing some great ball.

Really wish Scheyer would use Brown at the 3-4 alongside Maluach and Flagg for stretches. Drives me nuts why he won’t do that. Our defense would be exceptional. Flagg and Brown can guard the 1-4 spot defensively if needed with their length and quickness. The provide matchup problems on offense. But it seems Scheyer is locked into a rotation and can’t imagine anything different. He’s stubborn just like K was on that kind of thing. I’d like to see Brown at the 4 at least some of the time. He’s so good on defense he was pestering PGs last night.

I thought the Dickinson call was borderline getting tossed. But Brown’s head hitting the floor was bad. However he should have been called for a foul on that drive. He elbowed Brown right in the face! He had so many fouls but because he’s an all American and on KU they won’t foul him out. I hate the business where officials let that go. Scheyer also should have called time out in the hook in the first half. But the worst was the officials called a foul on every play after that like they needed to make up for kicking Dickinson out! If you have to do that why kick him out? They were horrible. If that were 1984 K, he’d have been T’d up.

Generally we played well down the stretch. But Kon haas to play better or take him off the court. It’s not that he’s bad, though his shooting was terrible, but he’s too selfish. He’s not Cooper Flagg.

But it was a great close game despite some poor play. If Kon uses his teammates better we win that game. Scheyer is falling into that same trap K did over and over again. An over reliance on two players and they are freshmen. Year after year. And there are two freshmen 4/5 star players getting 40 minutes on the bench. Come on. Smh.

Our veteran transfers played well generally. Gillis has to hit more 3s.

Hey at least they finally got a shot off. Not a good one, but it wasn’t just fumbled away…
cooper fumbled away the ball at 1:00 and kon jumped in the air with 7 seconds and turned it over.

jon’s offense isn’t great. he’s not putting players in great positions. but they’re turning it over. if kon and cooper are our best players, they don’t have good enough decision making to execute late u games. they’re freshmen

did we ever lead in that game? felt like ku thoroughly outplayed us and proctor was the only person the kept us within striking distance
