The New Lounge

In the '60s, people burned flags. I was young, but I didn't like it. I didn't like Kaepernick kneeling. But there's a lot of things each of us doesn't like and it doesn't make it illegal. It makes us uncomfortable. That's what democracy is about. At least that's what I learned in school.

I've seen a ton about the cops who yanked the kids out of the car. Online news and tv news. When it happened and just yesterday.

As for Brees' apologies, by damning his apology, some are criticizing his right to voice his opinion in the name of defending his right to express his opinion. So, does he only have the right to Express his opinion when we agree with it? Who on this board precisely knows what is in his heart? We do have his history of really, really supporting his teammates and community. Not definitive proof, but to me, leads me to believe his apology was sincere and thereby, appropriate.

Oh, I think his apology was ABSOLUTELY sincere. Absolutely. The guy plays in New Orleans. I am sure he heard from a lot of people who felt hurt, and I am sure he didn’t mean to cause it, and I am sure that, after talking and listening to people he did feel bad. I think his apology was totally genuine, even IF he got a little help with the actual physical writing of it (not saying he did, but if anyone bitches that an agent wrote it... so what? My mom still looks over my writing.)

I doubt anyone on this board questions his sincerity. If I am wrong, hope someone will correct me.

Interesting, I find the flag burning far more “over the line,” although if someone wants to do it go ahead, I’ll just shrug and walk on past... that’s your thing.

The kneeling... the fact that he literally had conversations with servicemen about how to do it appropriately... soldiers kneel ALL THE TIME, and often out of respect... that meant a lot to me, and how I view his motives. Not that Kaep hasn’t had his mistakes (the pig socks) but I think he has owned them and has honestly been a really positive influence on a lot of people.

Jesus christ. Like I ever said anything about me being smart or you being dumb. I don't know you from a hill of beans; how do I know if you are smart or dumb? I mean, you jump into this thread like a house on fire, STARTED OFF by accusing me of prattling and seemingly mocking my profession and then telling some terrible story and saying that is me? And I STILL took the time to respond to you? And somehow *I* am the condescending jerk?

A racist teacher saying terrible, illogical stuff to a child reminded you of me? WTF? Can't tolerate anyone disagreeing with me? That's like ALL THAT HAPPENS here. I engage with people with disagree with me ALL THE TIME. Because as much as I disagree with @Mac9192 , I still f'ing value him as a PERSON, and value interacting with him, and value his beliefs, and believe that we are all decent people at heart and it is worth discussing, no matter how hard it gets or how angry we get or how upset we get.

It is amazing how angry people get over imagined slights.

You are very strange, and it is probably better for you if you ignore me.

And you have a nice day too!

I had you on ignore and missed this, but your reaction here was almost exactly mine when you felt the need to talk to me like a speck of dirt in the infamous Perspective Thread when I didn't know you from a hill of beans. You obviously don't remember, but I dang well do. Still, I apologize for my earlier behavior. It was petty and childish. I do hope in the future you will be more mindful and realize your thinly veiled insults about my intelligence make me very angry. I don't think you're a stupid man, so I feel like you know saying someone doesn't know what a word means is interpreted by a large percentage of people as an insult. You didn't seem to like it when I said it back, so why do you think others would?

I understand, and agree with, protesting against actual police brutality. But the protest should be limited to that, especially in a country, unlike many others, which protects the right to protest against authority. However, Kaepernick's protest was not so limited, by his own admission, and, in fact, it disrespected our country AS A WHOLE. In addition, reports that he and his girlfriend were admirers of the black panthers prevented me from having any empathy with his message. If his message is that he hates everything about America, let him stew until he rethinks things. If I were a club owner, I would not want him, even now, absent some indication that he acknowledges that, as an American, there is still a lot that he needs to be thankful for. I just think it is sad that Kaepernick's name is cited in connection with what is unquestionably a righteous protest. OFC.
An athlete using his platform to make a peaceful protest about unfair treatment is about as American as it gets. You don't have to agree with his message; you can wish he found a different way to get that message out there; or decide you don't like him for whatever reason. But, we should really stop for a second and acknowledge that his protest is part of what makes America great. While involved in one of the most iconic American sports, he was able to voice a different opinion. I would say that the First Amendment protected him but since his protest took place while at work, the Amendment does not actually reach to him. Still, the values behind it -- that we should be free to criticize our government without fear of arrest -- did protect him and a number of servicemen said that they had enlisted to protect those very values that allowed him to make his protest without fear of arrest. Also, the funny thing about the Black Panthers is that they are not so different from those white guys with assault rifles on the steps of the Michigan capital. They exercised their Second Amendment right to bear arms to fight what they perceived to be the tyranny of the government. Again, how American is that?

I don’t see eye to eye with some of you here on a these issues we’ve been debating for a few days now. I am not sure that BLM is truly after equality. I think they are profiting off other blacks experiences.
Nothing has been made about the 2 Atlanta policemen fired a few days ago for excessive force on the 2? black students. The policemen are black. No one can convince me if they were white, this would get more pub. It would piggyback the Floyd story.

I agree with you guys about the Confederate flag.

I think like 5 got in trouble....I believe Floyd was the catalyst....all the new things i feel are being added to the fight....low steam probably because the Atlanta mayor acted so swiftly...??

That’s an interesting comparison, between the panthers and those types on the steps.

I was about to point out that the panthers actually were responsible for some deaths, but so are these militia types.

Hm. Funny, I’m not sure I’ve heard that comparison before.

You are right, I have no memory of this interaction.

I’m sorry that it had the impact it did.

I will say... Not speaking on that particular interaction in that thread, but I rarely deliberately try to insult anyone. I mean, I can get irritated and snarky like anyone the Internet, but often what I mean as simple deliberate speech (something I really value... even in day to day, face to face life, I place a HUGE value on direct, deliberate speech) I think gets taken, thanks in part to the completely tone deaf nature of the internet, as something snide and mean.

Like, if I say “I don’t think you know as much about TOPIC A as I do,” I may mean this as dryly and factually as possible, with no undercurrent of meaning... just literally that I do not think you know as much about a topic... but reading it, it might come off as this incredibly dicky, talking down, “You aren’t even fit to discuss this” attack sort of thing... but I likely mean it as a very simple, factual statement, with none of that layer of meaning. I am very big on the words that I type are literal and direct, and that if I was trying to imply something, I would instead deliberately say it.

Just so you know... if something reads as mean or whatever, it rarely is meant to be... Im just not a very mean person, and do not come to the internet to find conflict... what I enjoy is finding the common ground AFTER disagreement.

Anyway... I’m sorry for whatever I said (or however I said it) and hope that, should we discuss this stuff moving forward and something similar happen, you mention it so I can try to explain the intent.

Oh, and that teacher was absolutely wrong in every possible way, and deserved to be fired.

And I really did appreciate the use of the word prattle; it’s a fantastic word that is not used often enough in modern society, and my understanding of the meaning... speaking without knowledge or value, contributing nothing... is why I was as hurt by it as I was and lashed back... contributing value and speaking from a place of knowledge means the world to me:)

Thank you TheDude1. I also want to say that I didn't see you were leaving your job until after I had posted everything prior to previous post this morning. I know that was very difficult for you because how much you love your kids has always been obvious and they're fortunate to have someone who cares so much them. The impacts of a good teacher last far longer than I ever imagined. I still remember my first teacher Mrs. Gibson. It was pre-K and I mostly remember coloring and napping, but she made me excited to learn. That was a gift that kept on giving. I'm sure many of your kids will look back later in life and realize the difference you made in their lives. Also, I never thought you would do anything like my teacher did to your students. I'm sorry you ever thought that because that's a horrible thing to imply about any teacher. The story was meant to convey my feelings of frustration and not really understanding what was going on, but it really missed the mark. I promise I won't go off like that again with you or anyone else. I've never done it before and obviously I let it fester for far too long. Maybe it's menopause? (just kidding) Take Care.

P.S. Autocorrect keeps changing your screen name to TheDuke1. I think it knows something. :)

Well, thanks, I do appreciate it.

(To be clear, I am not leaving teaching... but the kids graduate tomorrow, and its the end of the year... and it is a TOUGH time of year.)

No problem, glad we sorted it out... I certainly have never looked at you as a poster in any negative way, and I'm sorry if I came off like that. If it happens again, just tell me it is happening!:)

And TheDuke1 is a MUCH better name, although it might infringe on a John Wayne copyright!:)

OK gotcha. I think I missed another post. Out of curiosity, do teachers get fired at the end of every year and re-hired at the start of the new year where you're at? Mine did, and every year they would get called to the office one by one the last day of school. I found out when one of them remarked "I'm off to get fired again". I always thought that was a strange practice.

Hm, not that I know of? My district certainly doesn't do that... our contract is actually a 365 day contract (although the number of working days are specifically outlined.) That may be an older practice?

Probably. It was five (+25) years ago. Man I'm getting old.

So, I know things have been nice.

Not trying to ruin this, but almost as much as a “wow” from a Founding Father as any sort of attack on Trump...

I saw this on Twitter... I had heard part of it, but not the whole thing

I get that some people will disagree, but wow... I feel like this is exactly and precisely what is going on right now (not the tweet on top; I am bad at linking twitter. The Alexander Hamilton writing.).

Steve Schmidt, of course, was the campaign manage for McCain and was played by Woody Harrelson in the TV movie about Sarah Palin and the election. He since has parted from some of the goings-on in the Republican party.

What some refuse to see is Trump is the result of millions upon millions that were fed up with ALL of the politicians. I'm not just speaking about Clinton, Obama...Sure, Trump often fires off his mouth when maybe being more reserved would have been a better option. But, he's not the problem.

I feel the only reason the left doesn't say more negative about the protesting and rioting is merely for votes. The media is a joke. I hear chants from protesters to 'Abolish the Police' from them, not just to defund them. Do you guys really think that helps matters?
The mayors of cities like Seattle and DC are a joke. This isn't protesting for a legitimate cause, these are loons. Blame the cops. No accountability. Has to be someone else's fault. That's a huge problem with the mindset of many. Find a problem, and then find someone to blame those problems on. Blame a man who has been in office for a little over 3 years, when so many of these politicians have held office for decades.

Then we get Sleepy Joe out of his basement yesterday. After his remarks of Floyd and Dr King, his staff couldn't get him locked back down there fast enough. Keep it up Joe, you're 2 for 2 in the baffled comments department.

You hit the nail right on the head. To put things in perspective, you have folks donating several millions to a known violent criminal. His death was uncalled for and I don't support the police officer at all, however, it's not like George Floyd was some type of honorable person. The man placed a loaded gun onto a pregnant women stomach and we have idiots donating to him in remembrance. There are better people to donate to! How about donate millions to the retired police chief David Dorn who was gunned down by looters in St. Louis. THis is today's mentality, let's support the thugs and make excuses for them and label everything racism.

Sadly the death of retired Chief Dorn was pushed to the side. He was the TRUE HERO in his valiant efforts, and had an excellent career. However, correct me if I am wrong:he was shot by african-american(s)?

There needs to be just as much emphasis on blacks killing blacks in the large metropolitan areas as white cops shooting blacks. For the BLM movement to really blossom in my opinion, such shootings within a race cannot be ignored by the Al Sharptons of the world.

He was a true hero and it sucks he's not getting the recognition he deserves. I get the outrage for what happened to George Floyd, but turning him into a Martyr is comical. Again, justice needs to be served, and I hope the cop gets everything that he deserves. However, this is a prime example of what's wrong with the media and our society. George Floyd would've never been in the situation he was in if he wasn't committing a crime (I'm not justifying the cops actions) and the police officer should've used better judgement (stating the obvious) and realized Floyd wasn't going anywhere and wasn't a threat once placed in handcuffs. What I don't understand is how the situation is automatically labelled racially driven. Isn't this racial profiling a situation without evidence? How do we know the officer was indeed a racist? Where is the evidence that supports this narrative? If he is indeed a racist, then charge him with a hate crime, until the evidence is substantial, take the race out of this situation and label it for what it is (excessive force by a police officer). At the end of the day, you have two parties that didn't use good judgement and put themselves a bad situation that ended terribly.

Don’t bring logic to the table. BLM can say what they want, but their actions show them to divide and profit.
I’ll say it again, no uproar has been made about the 2 Atlanta cops. I think it’s fair to say had they been white, Atlanta might be a war zone right now.

I think everyone agrees that Joe Biden has seen better days. The election will be a referendum on Trump. Kind of like when all UNX fans root for anyone but Duke, or in our case, we root for anyone but UNX.

It’s not so much that I stand in the Trump camp as much as I stand in the “I’m tired of the same ol same ol that ALL of them have been doing for decades.
Spin it how you want to, the crying out of ‘white supremacy’ is a tired act. One that also is used for political and money gain. Pure and simple.
Biden’s comments in his interview a couple weeks ago spoke volumes. “Vote for me, I’m the candidate to help you!” That’s nothing but a lie.
Look up the stats on poor cities and the party that’s led those cities, and for how long that party has led those cities.

Maybe it is white supremacy, but that’s not exclusive to one party. But I know, I know, it’s Trump’s fault.
