Shameless

Gawd. Just burn it down. Lord Amighty...

By canceling History 383, we believed that UNC has behaved as a “proprietary institution”: simply put, its administrators have acted as if the institution’s primary mission is to further its athletics program, with academics as a secondary and—in History 383’s case—and subordinate goal.

For anyone who takes the academic profession seriously, it is ironic and distressing that an institution that is still recovering from a scandal in which it was revealed that its athletics program interfered with its academic integrity is still—to put it bluntly—allowing its athletics program to interfere with its academic integrity. Mr. Cunningham’s email exchanges with Professor Smith indicate that the athletic director regarded a professor’s investigations into the UNC athletics-academic scandal as a nuisance rather than as worthy academic behavior (and his initial refusal to deny Professor Smith access to the Loudermilk Center strongly suggests that the athletic director conceives of his responsibilities in “proprietary” rather than “public” terms).

Dr. Cravey , although a professor at unx , has been an outspoken critic of her employer during the scandal. She's pretty outspoken about everything...particularly social issues. Anyway , from my experience with her ( she's on Twitter ) , she isn't likely to cut unx much slack on this. Not sure what , if anything , this group can do punitively but they can further expose the holes and create more public shame for her employer...assuming they can BE shamed.

That is a very big assumption

That is a very big assumption

She has zero interest in sports much less any hifalutin notions of the "carolina way." unx fans have attacked her on-line for it. She totally gives zero F's about the tarhole nation or Roy or Dean or anything having to do with tarhole sports. Mary Willingham . despite outting her employer for all the dirt they've done , is STILL a fan of unx athletics.

Altha Cravey, a geography professor speaking for the Progressive Faculty Network at UNC, a group of faculty members supporting economic and social justice, said the report exposes complicity outside Deborah Crowder and Julius Nyang’oro’s scheme.

Coaches were not held accountable, she said. Instead, professors, who had nothing to do with the scheme, became scapegoats, she said.

“There seems to be a wide institutional network that facilitated academic fraud,” Cravey said. “It’s important to note as faculty that most members of the department were not part of this network, and we want to affirm our support and appreciation of our colleagues and their important contributions to the research and teaching of this university,” Cravey said.

More questions for UNC about academic freedom and cancellation of sports history course

The representatives, Altha Cravey of UNC-Chapel Hill and Michel Behrent of Appalachian State University, asked UNC leaders to reaffirm their commitment to academic freedom and to assure UNC history professor Jay Smith that he can teach History 383 whenever “he and his department see fit.” Cravey and Behrent serve as the president and vice president, respectively, of the AAUP’s state conference in North Carolina.

Their letter was addressed to UNC Chancellor Carol Folt, Provost James Dean and two administrators in the College of Arts and Sciences – Dean Kevin Guskiewicz and Senior Associate Dean Jonathan Hartlyn.

Couple of things. Jonathan Hartlyn was co-author of one unx's initial forays ( Hartlyn-Andrews Report ) into "self-reporting" on this...

http://carolinacommitment.unc.edu/r...courses-in-african-and-afro-american-studies/

While the report pointed a finger at Nyangoro and Crowder , I failed to see the words "athlete" or "eligibility" anywhere. Maybe I missed it. It's a brief report. Pretty straight forward as you can see from the link. Again , maybe I just missed it. That or maybe there was a REASON I missed it...

"With their strategic silence on this and related issues , Hartlyn and Andrews effectively announced , long before Jim Martin would coin the phrase , "This is not an athletics scandal."

(Another ) brutal op-ed about the "flagship." This time from an alum...

At UNC, a place of truth, a loss of intellectual honesty

The paradox is this: UNC, accused by the NCAA enforcement arm of corrupt athletic practices, now pleads innocent – on the astonishing ground that the corruption is academic, not athletic, and none of the NCAA’s business. In effect, UNC argues, the phony courses were designed by departmental figures, not coaches or the athletic director. Has there been a more disheartening confession of twisted priorities at Chapel Hill?

Do the UNC administrators who sit still for this nonsense grasp its lethal implications?

Someone higher up the ladder must have vetoed the course, but his superiors disclaim responsibility and hide within the bloated bureaucracy that now passes in Chapel Hill for an “administration.”

A university that scoffs at the NCAA isn’t going to bother its head over the discontent of mere teachers.

But the worst of it, by any measure, is the abandonment of the intellectual honesty...

The UNC apologists who persist in this fracas with the NCAA seem to have forgotten that priority. They seem not to realize that transparent evasions set a poisonous example for young people who should be absorbing sound values for later life and learning.

These anonymous figures and their disingenuous pleas are betraying an honorable tradition. Ingenious? More like catastrophic. Already a string of evasions has needlessly extended the UNC scandal until it is the chief subject of scornful journalism about UNC from every point of the compass.

That pesky (b) subsection of bylaw 10.1 and how it relates to the UNC case.

Let’s begin with what we know. The NCAA Enforcement staff has issued 3 notices of allegation’s (NOA’s) to UNC starting in May 2015. UNC has responded to NOA’s 2 and 3. Prior to any of the NOA’s being issued, we also know we have the Wainstein report, a SAC’s investigation, a 2013 determination from AMA, and a procedural hearing where the COI chair wrote all around academic misconduct, but never actually cited a bylaw he is addressing with the enforcement staff, shortly before NOA 3 was issued.

Bill reminding UNC league papers are public records passes

What some legislators call a reminder to University of North Carolina system schools that their correspondence with members of athletic organizations are deemed public records has received final General Assembly approval.

The Senate agreed Wednesday night to a small change to the measure made by the House. The bill heading to Gov. Roy Cooper also applies to other documents associated with the schools' membership in the NCAA, Atlantic Coast Conference or other athletic leagues.

At least one bill co-sponsor said the records issue initially surfaced when the ACC and NCAA pulled championships from North Carolina because of the "bathroom bill," known as House Bill 2, which passed last year but has since been repealed

http://www.newsobserver.com/news/state/north-carolina/article158747524.html

Cooper's a unx alum. When he figures out this bill requires unx to be more expeditious an' transparent re FOIA requests , this piece of legislation may just die on his desk.

Who knows what the truth is when these kinda things ( unfortunately ) happen. But damn if unx don't have their bases covered when they do...

Sexual assault charges against UNC football player Allen Artis have been dropped

Kerry Sutton, an attorney for suspended UNC football player Allen Artis, says all charges against him have been dropped.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said the matter was resolved to the satisfaction of both parties but would not elaborate.

DA: no charges for Crowder in UNC fraud case

The prosecutor leading an investigation into fraud in an academic department at North Carolina says a retired administrator tied to the case won’t face charges.

In a news release Tuesday, Orange County district attorney Jim Woodall said Deborah Crowder from the formerly named African and Afro-American Studies department is cooperating with investigators.

Jim Woodall Looks to Be Extricating Himself From the UNC Scandal

Folt at UNC: True to Form

The idea that Carol Folt was almost Dartmouth’s President still makes many people shudder. Good for UNC for taking her off our hands. That said, the Tar Heels, at least the thinking kind, can’t be very happy to see that her usual reflexes of devious manipulativeness have lost none of their sharpness as she handles the fake-courses-for-athletes scandal that has been perturbing UNC for seven years now. The below excerpt is from an editorial in the News & Observer, the North Carolina paper that has not forgotten that an investigative press exists to keep institutions honest:

Woman sues over UNC tickets

An Alamance County woman is suing the Rams Club over her right to pass complimentary season tickets to UNC-Chapel Hill basketball and football games on to her heirs, while the club contends they should to pay.

It seems clear that the club — 42 years ago — promised the late publisher of the Alamance News and his wife complimentary season tickets for life and the right to pass them on to their children, but the club now seems to interpret the agreement as passing down the right to purchase tickets.

Tarhole Nation still salty...

Rashad McCants gets icy welcome in return to North Carolina with Big3 league.

The Big3 came to Charlotte on Sunday, and while Rashad McCants was the No. 1 selection in the inaugural draft for Ice Cube’s new 3-on-3 league, North Carolina fans know him for another reason.

Boos and heckles of “Snitch!” rained down at Spectrum Center, but McCants, who scored 13 points as his Trilogy team topped 3 Headed Monsters 50-37, apparently was oblivious.

“I don’t remember hearing no boos,” McCants said afterward

Called the man "snitch." His narrative is backed up by UNC History Prof Jay Smith, and ex UNC tutor Mary Willingham, and NO ONE on the inside has come forward to dispute it....

Always remember, Mary Willingham called Roy's bluff when he publicly questioned her, and Roy cowardly backed off!

Isn't callin' 'im a "snitch" an admission of guilt? Seriously. Why call 'im a snitch if he didn't reveal something they woulda preferred stay hidden? And , yeah , he's backed up by everyone. Those callin' 'im a liar haven't produced their transcripts to debunk his. This is silly. Obviously , if unx had an azzload of player transcripts that would exonerate 'em , the school woulda already taken out a full-page ad in the NY Times to post every player transcript from the last 50 years. Woulda redacted the names OR , even better , have the players sign a waiver allowing use of their identities. Either way , we'd have seen 'em all by now. We've only seen one. One. #hinky #RoyKnew

With Louisville and UNC, the NCAA's power is called into question

In the coming months, the NCAA will attempt to reiterate -- and perhaps redefine -- its role as the punitive arm of collegiate athletics.

Roy Williams' two national title banners could be lost in the NCAA's ongoing academic fraud investigation surrounding sham classes at UNC.
