Duke baseball -- 2023 season

I guess i am old school, but metz was up with runners on first and second, no outs. I would have bunted theguys over and the next guy flew out to the warning track...
I was thinking that too and pollard usually calls for that… I didn’t understand it either

And i think i just heard ABBA at a college baseball game for the first time ever.

If the ball was carrying like yesterday, Duke has at least like 5 home runs...

Oschell looks done… can’t believe how many pitchers we’ve used after their first threw 100 pitches

After 5 hour weather delay Wake is giving Maryland a nice welcome back to the ACC scoring 4 runs in the first.

What a pins and needles, thrilling and nail-biting win for our Boys from Durham!!! This old man was so excited!!! I listened to Duke play-by-play man Chris Edwards call the majority of the game, as this old fart got disconcerted by the ESPN split screen coverage.

As Chris said, "Duke is in the cat bird's seat now." We have to lose consecutive times to get booted, and we have all day to 6pm to rest. Let Rider and Coastal beat each other up at noon!! Let's Go Duke!!!

That inning we had first and second no outs and did not move the runners at all bothers me. I get things happen and runs are not scored, fine. And I get the guy who hit three bombs the day before was up with no outs so you do not want to bunt (you need runs, I am old school and I do not care who the hell is up, I want a sacrifice, but that is me). But what burns me the most (disclaimer, was not watching but listening), is with one out, we smash one to just short of the wall and our runners did not tag up. Even if that ball drops in or dropped, there is no way our guy at second does not score and our guy at first does not get to third. First, I have seen a guy score on a SF from second after a nice catch. Secondly, you put a ball, wp, pb, etc… into play. Finally, if both tag up, you cut down on force out opportunities. That could be the difference in winning or losing. Duke softball left the door open at time in the regionals by making base running mistakes and a lack of fundamentals. In a game where a few inches over would have meant a Rider win, you got to do all the little things. By and large, yesterday Duke did do all the little things right. But first and second no outs and never even advance the runners is inexcusable.

I wonder what the pitching strategy is--do you pitch your best tonight, or give you best pitchers another day's rest.

Rider not putting up a challenge today… I know they had some magic last game but looks like we’ll be up against coastal tonight. Just want rider to make them run through more pitchers

Rider has put runners and scored, at least, in the 7th.

Duke's pitching plan is obscured, at least for now. All I know is everybody is available, per source and the fact that everyone who pitched yesterday was 2 innings or less.

If I had to guess, Ryan Higgins will start against Coastal tonight. Last pitched 5/20 at Miami, has started 9 games this season with a 3.70 ERA and 1.09 WHIP, 32 Ks/13 walks in 41 1/3 innings.

Tonight obviously isn't a must-win for Duke but momentum can shift in a hurry, especially when the host team is fighting back from an opening-night loss. Coastal's offense has been pretty awesome all year; this is going to come down to which team pitches and defends better, and Duke's advantage in those categories is tonight with Coastal playing a doubleheader.

Duke the."home" team tonight.
Duke is the road team tonight.

It's based on Duke and Coastal both being the home team once in the regional (Duke against UNCW, Coastal the first time against Rider). Since they're tied, the better seed gets to be the home team.

Kinda sucks that Duke is 2-0 in the regional and at a disadvantage ... but that's how the home team designations go.

Live stats has us home

When i was in sports information and we went out to regionals in 09 and 10, seeding only mattered who was home in game one. From game 2 on, the team who had been home less was the home team. If equal, was a coin flip.

Yeah it’s stupid but coastal is the bottom despite duke also being the bottom yesterday

Yea so they also take into account number of times away now. So Duke would be home if they play tomorrow. But let us not go there.

I think the ball is carrying. We win big last night if this was the case. White did not pitch bad perse, he just did not finish when ahead in the count. Let's see how White responds.

Baseball is a funny game. Coastal's GS may be the best thing that happened to Duke. May have calmed us down. And after Duke did what they did to UNCW on Friday, dear god, why in the world would you light an extra fire under Duke by show boating after a home run? And with the ball carrying like that, a four run lead in the first is far from safe.

I mean 2/4 runners scored were because he hit them. Almost hit him again not sure how we got that strike, hope pollard sees it

When you watch college baseball long enough, you see strikes and ball calls that just make you shake your head. Duke radio mentioned CC has more than 100 hit batsmen. When a team is known for crowding the plate (assuming they do), more likely for something like that to happen.

My favorite calls from the former Kent State baseball radio guy is when he got mad and said "pitch right down the middle for ball 4"...

I switched over to the Wake game(local guy pitching for Wake) and came back to a lead. Love it. That right field fence is short

Appreciate the insight, idk much about baseball but I still feel as if that was a really bad inning

Weaver just got us out of a tough one

Home plate umpire needs to ask for time for himself and compose himself. The worst thing you can do if you are blowing it (and he knows it, as he has probably should have run both coaches) is not take an extra second and compose yourself. Pollard does the old mound visit that really is to chirp at the ump, make him come out to break up the visit, and then get a few words in...

Both Duke HRs came on the first pitch of the at-bat.
