2020 Recruiting

Any chance someone can do a quick rundown on the class so far? Each player's strength and weaknesses?

Agreed. He wouldn't go after any grad transfers if we're able to snag both recruits. However, I'd say the odds are we won't get Dickinson.

I wouldn't say that. Odds are we'll have 3 open scholarships without the addition of any grad transfer. And with only 3 available bigs (Brakefield, Coleman, and probably Williams), we could really use another body.

Sr (2): O'Connell, Goldwire
Jr (1): Baker
So (1): Stanley?
Fr (6): Johnson, Roach, Steward, Williams, Brakefield, Coleman

Also, Northwestern is a very similar academic institution. I think he would be a great fit. A big that can score, rebound, and shoot. Sign me up. He graduated high school in 2016; he's played 2 years of college basketball. So yes, I think he'll be an eligible grad transfer for 2020-2021.

By the end of the year, Stanley will probably be our highest ranked pro prospect. He has skills with the ball in his hands and can defend. I can see him as a Westbrook type player at the next level. He would give you hell at the point with his athleticism and ballhandling/playmaker skills he has shown. I think Tre comes back honestly. I just don’t see him leaving if his stock is based off shooting. It’s just not something he will be really good at. Eventually he may be formidable though. Rondo is just starting to make 3s at this late part of his career

I’ll take a stab @dbav... If of course you promise to listen to the podcast. :D I’ll use Duke comparisons on this one where applicable.

Jalen Johnson - 6’9 point forward. Jalen is a great ball handler and distributor. He’s an opportunistic scorer who sets his buckets up by getting his teammates involved first. Still struggles as a shooter. Plays tough on D at times and hunts rebounds well (think RJ in that regard). Compares to no one in a Duke jersey. Patterns his game after Ben Simmons (his words not mine).

Jeremy Roach - Ultra quick and bouncy 6’2 point guard. Is a great floor general, communicates well on D and O, and plays plus defense. A developing shooter, but shoots it better than Tre. Compares favorably to William Avery. May be the second most athletic point K has had (JWill being the first). From all accounts up here, his knee is coming along great and shouldn’t be a hindrance.

DJ Steward - Tough combo guard. Plays good defense (shut down BJ Boston; actually that may have been the game where K switched his sights from Boston to Steward). He’s an exceptional shooter. He‘ll be able to score from day 1. Is learning to play point. Think Daniel Ewing.

Henry Coleman - Motor, motor, motor. 6’6 but plays like he’s 6’10. He’s a jumping jack with great intensity. Not a good scorer yet, but his IQ and willingness will allow him to become serviceable in that area in about 2 years. He’d be close to a double digit rebound guy with starters minutes. Plays decent perimeter D too. Not the scorer Brickey became, but is similar in size, athleticism and dog.

Jaemyn Brakefield - 6’8 power forward that oozes athleticism and potential. Best friends with Jalen Johnson. He plays above the rim and hunts highlight plays on both sides of the ball. Still has a lot to learn about the game and I hope he wants to stick around a bit, because if he stays 3 years, he’ll be an All-American. He may be the second best shooter in the Duke 2020 class behind Steward. Compares to no one at Duke. With an increased handle, could take on the Dunleavy role of ‘02 down the road.

Mark Williams - Elizabeth Williams’s Little Bro who desperately wants to make his own name at Duke. Great shot blocker, runs the floor smoothly and quickly for a 7’1 guy. Rebounds out of his area and is active as hell. The comparison is going to sound rough, but believe me it’s promising. He is who K thought Casey Sanders would be. Casey didn’t have the focus to do what I think Mark will at Duke.

Hopefully that gives you a snapshot of what this class looks like. It’ll be a good one. They lack scoring punch, but if someone stays from the ‘19 class, that will take care of that.

If and I know it’s early but if Tre were to come back for a Junior season, do u think Roach sticks with Duke? Just a thought that crossed my mind

Nah. He’s not afraid of competition, and he has even said if Tre is there he’s willing to play and learn with him. The Goldwire/Tre combo may be an audition for that very combination.

That was one concern i had as well because to me at this point i think tre should stay due to it not looking like he developed a shot. Things can change tho.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised. I’d rank it as Williams, Roach, Duval as a top 3.

Thanks Hokie. Actually, the Kansas game is on my birthday, and I have the evening off. I'll try to pregame with podcasts, haha.

I liked the Ewing comparison in there. He was one of my favorites.

I watched some Johnson highlights. It may have just been the competition, but he looked bigger than 6'9" to me. Also, he's built like a truck.

Excited to see if Dickinson will come too. Mr. Sumner mentioned that Duke is looking for as many as 8 in this class. Are there other names we should be paying attention to?

I think Dickinson will be it in this class if he even commits. After that, there will be conversations about current guys leaving and I’d think K would hit the grad transfer market if needed. That’d be about it. It seems all the 2021 guys want to stay in their classes. For now at least.

Are you leaving off Kyrie Irving on purpose?

In terms of raw athleticism? Yes. Not talent. In terms of speed, run and jump, lateral quickness, etc., those 3 are/were ahead of Kyrie IMO. Maybe you have access to numbers that prove otherwise, but having seen all of those guys, I’d say yes, he’s behind them.

I left Paulus off too in case you were wondering.

Kyrie has openly talked about how he had to develop moves because he isn’t as athletic as his counterparts. Granted it’s all relative but i agree overall.

i hope you’re right about Roach being that kind of athlete!

Exactly. He is and that knee isn’t an issue. We’ll have to hit a PVI game or two this year. Show Trevor Keels some love too.

Interesting. Are we talking speed? Explosiveness? Hurley and Avery were super quick. As far as jumping, Frank Jackson should possibly be in the discussion. (not a true point guard I realize.) Jason Williams was the most athletic over all I'd say.

Talking total package. Speed, quickness, change of direction, vertical, explosiveness when jumping. Jeremy is a sight to behold.

Thanks. Great breakdown. I'm really, really high on Steward, His scoring ability reminds me a lot of Coby White (as unpopular as that may be). He took it to A LOT of big names this summer and he is getting even better, Being slightly undersized as a 2 and not being (at this point) a true 1 may keep him here for an additional year or two as well. This guy is an absolute steal. Amazing job by the staff.

Brakefield is also going to get stronger. He is listed between 6-8/6-9 and around 215. He will be at least 220+ when he arrives at Duke. He can shoot the ball, rebounds well, is athletic, mobile and is a willing defender. I would not be surprised by him coming in and surprising a bit like Stanley this year.
