2020 Recruiting

S&S hasn’t been insanely accurate on their recruiting takes lately.

Look, I think the kid is awesome. The stuff that makes him “college ready” from the start, will also keep him as a non-factor on draft boards.

- He’s 6’3, probably 6’1 or 6’2, meaning he doesn’t have a learning curve with his body, but also means his size and length aren’t elite. Great for college, not the draft. It also means as a first year guy, he won’t be THE showcase.

- His best skill, shooting, is only a coveted, lone NBA skill if you’re 6’8 and above. You have to have some other skill set if you’re below the league’s invisible Michael Jordan line (6’6).

- He still has some work to do at the college level yet, to sharpen his tools. By this I mean, it’s absolutely not out of the realm of possibility to see him have a 20 point game here or there as a freshman or soph (AOC has done that), but don’t expect it every night.

I type this only because I want our fans to be patient with a dude who is going to be awesome, but eventually. The same stuff we wanted for Boogie Ellis, we’re getting here, but quite honestly, probably better, so thank you, Boogie.
How dare you disagree with my take! :) Kidding that was a really good response. Trust me I don't want him to be one and done. They did say he is skyrocketing up the rankings. They had Duke at 2 btw.

To start the season, I wouldn’t agree with that either. :D

Gentleman on another board mentions internet scuttlebutt about us getting involved with Hunter Dickinson.
True, but it might be one of those too little too late scenarios. Would love to have him. Big dude and is 7’2. Now he may wait until to spring to make a decision. If that’s the case, then it is definitely not too late to get involved with him. Not really sure on what is timetable is looking like

I know it's probably just the way it plays out but I like how we are getting guys who can help us as well as guys who may be here a few years.

Please tell me Roy turned him down already!?!?

hof coach roy williams just can't take them all. He has turned down a lot of very fine players. Not just anyone is a hof coach roy williams type player. They have to special to be a part of that wonderful family. You must have great character and integrity. If you can't live up to his high standards he will make them run the dean dome steps from the floor to the roof ( or is it called the ceiling ) because he loves them . Who wouldn't want to play 4 years for this man. He will turn down many more fine basketball players before his career is over. I'm thankful and grateful as a Duke fan that he does turn down a great majority of players. He does not recruit. Players recruit him and how tough it must be to be told that you just don't have it to be a tar heel. I'm so happy that Tre Jones, Tyus Jones, Zion Williamson, R.J. Barrett, Cam Reddish, Jason Tatum, Brandon Ingram, Jahlil Okafor, Jabari Parker, Rodney Hood, MP1,MP2,MP3, Kyrie Irving, Harry Giles, Frank Jackson, Quinn Cook, Seth Curry, Austin Rivers, Jav, Jack White, Lance Thomas, Nolan Smith, John Scheyer, Andre Dawkins, Grayson Allen, Ryan Kelly, Matt Jones and so many, many more weren't the kind of players that fit into hof coach roy williams profile of a college athlete. Where would Duke be as a program if it no for hof roy williams and the standard he has set for his program. OFC

If you are a one and done player Ol Roy has a deal for you. Come in and stay three or four years. He will hold you back so your NBA stock drops each year. But don’t worry you will be well compensated. In fact you would be taking a pay cut if you turned pro early. You will be well paid, luxury car rentals free, don’t worry about having to attend class. Someone will do your class work for you and you will receive great grades. Attractive prostitutes, I meant coeds, will be available when you are not engaged in basketball practice or games. Also, several nice rentals homes will be available free of charge to you and your families at no charge. Your families will be well compensated if they choose to quit work to follow your college career. If you choose to engage in criminal activities or get into legal scraps we have great lawyers and judges to take care of you pro bono. Lastly the governor of North Carolina is a member of the Rams Club and huge fan of the Heels. So nothin could be finer than to be in keroliner and playing for the tarheels.

Everything I've been reading, Mark Williams is coming, it's just when will he announce? He is roommates with Jalen Johnson at IMG Academy.
I really want him, 7 footer, ranked 29th overall in the class. Think he could be a multi-year guy while also being able to make contributions his freshman year. He's a banger.

I'd love for us to get Dickinson as well, but I don't know if we will. Jalen Johnson will be starting at the 4, and we should have Coleman and Mark Williams battling for minutes. Not to mention...the biggest fish of all, Kuminga, still could reclass. That would eliminate any worry for the 2020-2021 Duke team.
Adam Rowe said Kuminga is the best player in high school right now..period.

Despite Little's season being underwhelming to say the least. What players has Roy held back exactly ?

It's not necessarily held back, somehow these players took longer to learn from Roy and have not progressed at the next level either. For some reason, these guys don't really grasp the system and take at least 2 to 3 years to get it together.

Then they have good to great seasons, move to the NBA and flop. It's as if Roy doesn't teach these guys how to excel at the highest level once they leave UNC.

Here are a few names, though I'm sure there are more.

Theo Pinson - 5 star
Justin Jackson - 5 star
Isaiah Hicks - 5 star
James Michael McAdoo - 5 star
John Henson - 5 star

Gotta put Seventh Woods on that list for sure!

Weren’t the Wear twins 5 stars???? Lmao yikes.

Good question. The best NBA player under Roy is Harrison Barnes. He's had a good career so far, average 13.6 PPG for his career, but that's about it. Ty Lawson and Marvin Williams have also had a good career.

I'm running out of names!

Well to be fair roy does run a complex system over there. I mean the dribble drive and secondary fast break are two very tough offenses to learn. Sometimes it takes 3-4 years to fully comprehend those.

Agreed. It's also so complex that they are unable to figure it out even after they leave UNC.
