2020 Recruiting

I think our offers out by the staff says all we need to know. We want 6-7 guys we have 2 commits and 5 offers out. So out of the offers we need 4 of those. The staff feels we get 4 of the remaining guys this why we have started recruiting and offer more 2021 guys. Think we get Williams, Coleman, Walker Kessler, and one DJ or Williams. Be nice get class done by November and go all out for Williams

I hope you're right...would be nice.

Would love to get Coleman. He will lead the team in rebounding plus he should be here for 2-3 years.

Coleman seems like a guy who needs to develop a little bit more offensively but even in the 1-2 years of developing he’ll still be a huge piece because of how athletic he is and how he can do the dirty work.

Having Kuminga reclass into 2020 and commit to Duke would be the biggest get of them all, kid is gonna be an immediate superstar.
Ziare Williams would be next on my wish list because 1. The kid's stock just keeps going up and up and wouldn't be shocked if he ends up a top 3 player in the class and 2. We are stealing him away from UNCheat.

I'm not sold on Kessler. I just don't like the thought of having a slow big who's best attribute is 3 point shooting. Scoring won't be a problem for Duke, we need a rim-protector and more rebounders (especially since the only guaranteed OAD off this years team is Vernon Carey and we will lose Javin/Jack.) I'd still take Kessler though and see what he gives us.

Henry Coleman is another ideal get. Should be here multiple years, and seems like a guy to do all the dirty work, rebounding/screens etc. I can definitely see him being a more polished Javin.
I still hope we land Steward too. Probably a multi-year guy and an elite shooter.

It would be nice if we can reel in all these guys we want. A line up of roach, AOC, ziaire w., jalen Johnson, and mark williams or Kessler. With goldy, steward, Coleman, and then the opposite of whoever starts at the five between MW and WK would be a nice starting line up and nice bench to go with it. Defense would be my one concern.

Looking at next season....Duke already has Roach/Johnson and I look for them to add at least 4 more guys maybe 5.

Locks IMO: Coleman/MWilliams/Steward
Trending: Zaire/Kuminga/Kessler

Ideally Duke would add Roach/Johnson along with Coleman/M Williams/Steward and one of Kuminga in a relcass or Zaire with Kessler Dukes backup plan to Mark Williams-although Duke could still add both

Next season could look something like:
Roach/AOC/Kuminga or Zaire/Johnson/Williams
Goldy/DJ/Baker/Colemen/Kessler

For clarity's sake I assume Mark Williams is the first Williams you reference and Zaire Williams the second. We may need to start using initials.

Cracks me up when people say, so and so should be here 2 or 3 years...

If anybody comes to Duke and balls out, they’re 1 and done. There will be another big time recruit waiting to take their spot the next year. Doesn’t matter where they’re ranked in high school.

I just don't see Zaire coming to Duke. UNC seems to be running a system of one 1 and done each year and they are probably selling that to Zaire.

I wouldn't be shocked if Coach K has some back up plans that we aren't aware of and if he gets let's say 2 more top players for the 2020 class, he'll fill it with some 50-100 ranked players like AOC or that kind. I would be fine with that situation. Of course, if all the top targets come, I'm fine with that too!

With the new OAD rules conigoverning into place recruiting will change. We will see coaches recruiting the lowerest 4 and 3 star players . It's still gonna be college basketball and the best coaches will still be getting the best players. I can't wait for one reason is that I will once more remember what Duke players looked like their last season. Oh I would recognize Zion and maybe Cam. I think I could remember what Bagley looked like if he didn't cut his hair if I ran into them randonly but as far as it comes to guys like MP3, JJ, Grant, Laettner, Hurley, J.Dawkins, Ferry, Alarie, Amaker, Gminski, Banks, Denton, Mullens, Verga, Spanarkel and tell list goes on and on the faces will always be in my mind. Occasionally, the coaches have plans for a certain player to be around for so long. It was always the plan for instance, for Javin to be here 3-4 years. Tatum was clearly a 1 year player. Tre was thought to be a 2 year guy. It’s a part of their recruiting plans which span 3 years at least.

So if a guy leaves early, it sets the plan back a bit. You can tell who they anticipate leaving based on who they are recruiting. It isn’t that weird to project that.

Just watch my first kuminga highlight. He’s like a super athletic Cuttino Mobley! It’s scary!

I always read into these IG/twitter post that if the kid gets his picture taken with a Duke jersey on, that he is coming to Duke. I just feel like in the past we see a commitment picture or video that must have been take/made the same time trying a jersey on.

Just posted this on 247:

Here's the rundown from what I have gathered:

1. John Watson says that the father has said no reclass. That's the most important point in this entire thing right now, because it comes straight from the father. However . . .

2. Rumors persist out of AAU circles on other boards (their info also says its Duke/Auburn battle for Boston and Kessler) that Patrick is a prime reclass candidate and Duke would be in excellent position.

3. Now, the father could have changed his mind/something could have changed/etc. Recruiting is fluid- that's the big thing I've learned over the years.

4. Possibility: the information out of AAU circles on other boards is simply inaccurate and there is no shot Patrick reclassifies.

Some facts:

1. Duke is not recruiting any other forwards, as Boston is a 2 guard (to most) and JJ can/will play the 4. Kessler and Williams at the 5.

2. Duke offered Baldwin earlier than anyone ever- after his freshman year.

3. Baldwin is really good and would fit perfectly with his 3-point shooting. He is 6'9 and shot 40% from 3 last year in AAU. He is a smooth handler, can finish well, etc. He is the number 1 player in the 2021 class for a reason.

4. Duke would be a bona fide Super Team with Roach-Boston-Baldwin-Johnson-Kessler. You've got to think Coach K wants to end the OAD era with a giant bang.

5. It makes all the sense in the world for Patrick to reclassify if he's ready, and his dad is a coach, so he will know this as well, I surmise. That extra year of earning potential could be critical down the line.
Just a heads up; there is a popular misconception that there will be no more “one and done”. That is not the case, there will still be “one and dones”, kids can just now come right from high school. But they are not eliminating “one and done”.

I've been reading today that UNC could perhaps be the favorite to land Cade Cunningham (alot of "experts" say he is the best player in the class.) Weird because his brother was just hired as an assistant at Oklahoma State and Cade was assumed to be a lock to go there.

This would be very bad if UNC gets him, very very bad.
Don't know why he would want to go there unless he has dreams of his draft stock falling 20+ spots.

I really hope this is a deflection in order to get his name back in the news. Maybe he was thinking everyone assumed he would be at Oklahoma State so everyone stopped talking about him? I hope so.

Been reading similar things, although I haven't read anything saying UNC is the favorite. More that OK State is far from a lock and that the Cheats have a legit shot. Not saying you're wrong, I just haven't seen anything that explicit. IIRC I did read someone break it down as OK State has a 50% chance, Cheats 40%, 10% other.

I agree... he is an absolute beast and I would hate for him to end up there.

They're in the mix for a number of 5-star guys unfortunately.

Edit: here's the article I alluded to

Interesting timing for this news too, because he was just on his visit at Ok St.

Nassir Little says hi!

We pick on Roy, and yeah it’s fun. But I agree with how he played Little. At first, I thought he was just being Roy, but the fact was, Little wasn’t that good. Had Little been better, he would have played him more.
He played Colby White.

He needed Little to be better, we needed Reddish to be better. Neither were. The difference is, Roy didn’t start and play him 30+ minutes.

While I agree with what you're saying, I will add that Roy didn't have much of a choice to play Coby White, he had no real option at the PG position. We all know he had Seventh Woods but he's not that good.

If UNC gets Cunningham i don’t think Roy can even mess him up. Cunningham is a beast and he’s going to be really good for whoever he plays for

Exactly. That’s why I want him to go to the wasteland that is Oklahoma State. Duke will never play against him and we won’t ever have to worry about him again.

Why did we back off Cunningham? Seems like we had momentum with him, but when his brother ended up as an assistant at Oklahoma State, we seemed to back off him!

If there's a coach that would mess it up, it's Roy. Nassir was a top 5 basketball recruit and didn't average double digits or start in college.

Look Roy is obviously a great coach, he wouldn't be in the hall of fame or have so many wins if he wasn't. But I don't think he is able to be flexible with his talent as Coach K is. Little was a big time talent who Roy made no effort to accommodate in the lineup. If Little had given them a Cam Reddish type season even, they might have been a final four team.

It’s really simple. Roy is a systems coach and has done very well with the system he runs. Roy’s team are great when he’s able to retain 4-5 top 15 recruits As Upperclassmen, which gives him a significant advantage talent and Experience wise. I’m not saying he’s a bad coach, but if you were to give 10 of the top coaches an all freshman team with the same talent, I’m willing to bet Roy wouldn’t do as well as 8 or 9 of those coaches.

I think if we offered him, we would have had a decent shot at him, but with no offer, there is obviously no way he is coming to Duke

It would be funny though, if he chose Duke without having being offered. It's kinda like George Costanza showing up at work the day after he thought he got fired and pretending he still worked there (Seinfeld reference). I like the guts of a move like that.
