Official Gameday thread ACC CHAMPIONSHIP- Duke vs UVAint

Jon makes the title game in year one, something we didn’t expect but exciting! He is proving himself and we are looking very impressive. Time get get back what is ours and put Virginia in their place.

Game is scheduled for 830 on ESPN at time of writing I do not see a line* at 130 am we are a 2 point favorite

I fully expect us to win the game and solidify a 4 seed (crazy that we’re in this position) we’re going to blitz them!

Duke-87
UVA- 65

On a side note I bought tickets to the Charlotte hornets game for tomorrow fully expecting duke to be safely at home waiting for Sunday.. the games at 7 and I hate the NBA so I told my buddy’s as soon as it’s over we have to run to a sports bar and catch the rest of the game haha

GO DUKE

ACC tournament

Will have a preview up later tonight heading into Duke's first game.

Georgia Tech has come back from a 15-point deficit to take a 52-50 lead on Pitt with about 12 minutes left -- Duke plays the winner.

Obviously Pitt is the better team. But GT has improved a ton since Duke's 86-43 win in late January. Think it'd still be better for Duke if GT wins, because it's really hard to win a third game in three days against a team that's been off previously.

This Duke team is one of the more dangerous teams to watch out for in the Country.

I don't post anywhere as much as I used to but this Devils Illustrated HOF'er doesn't blow smoke with proclamations like this unless I truly believe it. Don't be down about Saturday as these kids wanted that game badly and they fought hard and should have won it. Had the correct call been made (as the ACC has stated it should have been) then one free throw wins the game. They're not going to finish first or maybe even top 4 and they're unranked right now which will have them off the local and national radar but that's fine. They're ridiculously young and have taken their lumps, Jon has not had his full roster of players for most of the season which only increases the learning curve and it's no secret on what they have to improve on. A big one being the damn turnovers. We can already see subtle changes taking place that could make a big difference later. I like having Proctor take a larger role in ball-handling duties which not only frees up Jeremy to be that attacking guard with his quickness, it allows Procter with his height and ability to read situations to make plays himself or find open guys. That mid-range jumper he has utilized quite a bit is a good example. The dunk he had off the bounce the other night was sensational, and I thought for sure UVA had it almost stripped before he made the one handed throw down. As the announcers love to remind us, he could still be in high school.

Lively/Fillipowski/Young are an excellent quartet of bigs. We saw what Lively did to Carolina, effectively owning the interior on the defensive end whether it was slowing down Bacot or swatting driving guards. Kyle has been great all year, UVA was certainly his worst game, he might even say the worst game he's played in his entire life but that's also a credit to Tony Bennett. No doubt in my kind that Tony game planned strongly for Filipowski knowing the tear he has been on and the potential damage Duke could cause inside. Dariq Whitehead gives them that versatile forward who can shoot and attack off the bounce he just needs game action. He's back now and two bad decisions with the ball aside Saturday, his scoring allowed Duke to take that lead. Mark Mitchell doesn't have the consistent shooting, however he is a warrior/disrupter defensively and averages over 8 a game.

Looking at the guards Jeremy Roach obviously is THE key guy you want on the court for his experience and abilities, he is a terrific attacking guard with excellent quickness. As mentioned earlier you can see what Jon is doing with Proctor/Roach at times in a way that his Coach utilized him and Nolan Smith. Then you have the shooter Grandison and people forget that this guy averaged 41% or higher from 3 at Illinois the last two years and he's only averaging 34% 3-point shooting so far this season for Duke which is another of those "potential" areas of improvement that would really help this team. With Blakes you have a physical guard who is a good defender, if Jon could just get more offense from him that would be a plus.

This is already a top two defensive team in the ACC allowing only 63.2 ppg. Youth, turnovers, discipline, decision making with the ball etc. a number of things that need to continue to improve. Currently Duke is a respectable 17-8 and 8-6 in the league and they are @Notre Dame, @ Cuse, host a very bad Louisville team and a decent Virginia Tech team in their next four games. Duke has a great chance to achieve a 21-8 overrall record and a 12-6 league record the next couple weeks before closing it out hosting a very good NC State team and then @ the K-Dome for the RS finale.

Keep your spirits up with this squad because they are absolutely a very dangerous team at full health that can make a run in both post-season tournaments. They're not going to do it blowing people out, they're going to do it with defense, the question is just how much can they improve on some of the issues as they have a great opportunity here the next four ball games and I'm sure the staff knows it.

Thoughts? am I preaching to the choir or could some of our folks use a little uplifting message?

Official Gameday thread- ACC tournament Duke vs Miami

After yesterdays dominate win our hopes are all high going into today. Game is at 7 on espn2 with duke currently a 2.5 point favorite.

We’ve had two radically different games against Miami and it’s nice to get another crack at them.. the way we were run out of the gym in Miami seems to have been the turning point for this team and I’m sure they’re excited to get revenge which I think we will do

Caleb Love versus Jeremy Roach

As we all know, Caleb Love likes to go off against Duke. However, outside of against Duke, he is pretty bad. It’s well reported he grew up a Duke fan and wanted the Duke offer, but K fell in love with Jeremy Roach’s game instead. Per 247, Love was recruit #14 and Roach #23.

Love:
FR 28 mpg, 10.5 ppg, 3.5 apg, 31% FG (yikes) 3.1 TO
SO 34 mpg, 15.9 ppg, 3.6 apg, 37% fg, 2.7 TO
JR: 36 mpg, 16.6 ppg, 2.9 apg, 38% fg, 2.3 TO

Roach
FR 27 mpg, 8.7 ppg, 2.8 apg, 45% FG, 2 TO
SO 29 mpg, 8.6 ppg, 3.2 apg, 41% fg, 1.6 TO
JR 32 mpg, 12.5 ppg, 3 apg, 39% fg, 2.1 TO

Did K make the right call?

Anyone else noticing this similarity to the 2010 team?

One thing I remember about the 2010 team that Jon played on that this team is successfully duplicating is the rebound kickout and I love it. I hate when a big gets a rebound and thinks it is a given that they supposed to go back up with it and try to score rather than navigating their surroundings first. It seems like 50+ percent of the time they end up just throwing it at the goal hoping to draw a foul. Zoubs and Lance Thomas were not great leapers and were masters of the kickout for 3. Derick Lively who can jump out of the gym is a great leaper but a has no touch around the basket. I think Jon has been teaching both Livley and Ryan Young to both look for the kickout first and they are doing a great job with it. Flip on the other hand seems to have the green light to choose what he thinks is best. If we can hit a decent % of these kickouts and limit turnovers I think we can win it all because our defense is better than any of our recent freshman dominated teams.

Official Gameday thread- Duke vs Pitt ACC Tourney

March madness is upon us and I for one am excited!! We’ve seen this team take many forms this year.. to high hopes in the beginning to low down terrible no good scary nit level to pretty darn good. We’ve swept the heels, up to a 5 seed in Joey Brackets latest bracketology and coming in hot hot to the ACC tournament, something I’ve always loved.

As a kid Duke owned the tourney and we still in much respects do.. this year is hopefully no different as we embark on another trip to the “coach k invitational” without coach k

First up for our devils… the panthers from Pittsburgh and the ACC coach of the year Jeff capel. Game time is set for 230 in Greensboro on ESPN with duke currently sitting as a 6point favorite. Duke won the first meeting back in January 77-69. Jeff has a good squad that was actually leading the conf about a week ago but things can shift quickly in the ACC. I see us playing a little tight at first as we tend to do with multiple days off and even possibly going behind by 8-10 points but we pick it up toward halftime and the second half we show up pushing our lead to double digits and move on to friday

Jim Boeheim retires

Big news. The school just announced this. Adrian Autry to take over. Was he forced out? He didn't sound too happy in the post game presser. (Not that he ever does recently) Grumpy as he was the last few years I've always liked him and thought he did a great job at Syracuse. Won a title with Carmelo and nearly won another title. Had some really good teams during the Pearl Washington/ Billy Owens / Derrick Coleman years. Wonder how this effects the Cuse going forward. K, Roy, Jim, Brey. The times they are a changin.
