Story on Trevor Keels/final scholarship

Based on that interview Jon seems to recognize the need for some experience. If Keels leaves we should add another guard. Question is will it be a Green level guard or someone like Catchings?
Keels is 27 on ESPN's latest mock draft.
If that holds then Keel should be gone. Hard to turn down going to the Heat. Same mock draft had Moore at 32 to Portland. He is the one that should return instead of going to that graveyard of a team….and city.

I don’t think NIT but also shouldn’t think national championship out the gate on his first year for Jon. Who else is there in the portal at the sg spot?

They will need a impact player if Keels and Green are not that option. Maybe Patrick Baldwin Jr if he decided to comeback. Duke already has a great relationship with him from last year. Maybe he could fill the 3 spot and move Whitehead to the 2.

Green was quoted as saying "they(Duke) need a lead guard to play the two or the one, along with Roach."
Green is also waiting til the end of the month to decide.
And yes, Green is on campus. Sounds like Keels is gone, but it also sounds like we might get Green.
I don't like that Trevor might be gone, but I do like that we're not waiting on Green. Green is an excellent shooter.

I like this guy if Duke can pick him up. A 39% 3 pt shooter who has been the target of defenses as his team's #1 scorer. His 85-90% foul shooting suggests he can be an even better 3 pt. shooter when open more often.

I'm not concerned too much about his defense as long as he'll put in the effort. Even with Keels' supposedly great defense, and Moore and Williams being stellar defenders, our defense sucked last year. Maybe Green can get around a pick occasionally, wouldn't that be a change.

Green is a really good player, and a senior. I will be excited about next year if we get him. Our backcourt would be a junior and a senior! I like our incoming class, I just didn't want to start 4 freshman and Roach. This would give us a nice blend and put us in the conversation. It also checks two of my boxes, shooting and experience. Trevor could still return, but it sure is not looking that way.

If Green comes, I think he would be a good model for Schutt, being a shooter and about the same size.

I'd like it if the Ivy League transfer can give some "Theo" type minutes of toughness up front. Don't know if he has the size for it though.

Young is a big dude. A bit slow, but better offensively than Theo. Typical Big 10 bruiser. He is a very good back up C. Who have we had as a back up C that could hang 18 and 8 on Michigan State? Burgess is the last one I can remember. Javin did have a double double against them, but that was his peak. Bolden had that one great game against Auburn, and then never did that again.
Trevor was only 6-3 and 13 percent body fat at the combine. Not ideal but I still think he's gone.

13% body fat doesn't sound like he toned up and lost weight. But like you said, he's probably gone.

Too bad. I like Trevor and wish him the best of luck. Ready to move on though.

Keels' standing vertical leap was only 24 inches. That's the worst I can remember for a guard
This doesn't surprise me. He played under the rim the whole year. He needs to improve his athleticism the way Wendell did this past year or he'll be eaten up by the NBA guards who are just as tall but much more athletic.

I'm amazed how many guys in the NBA playoffs I barely remember from college who are super athletes and their skills have caught up to their athleticism.

Patrick Baldwin with the second slowest agility at the combine. Keels with the 3rd slowest. Baldwin did really bad on the vertical and sprints as well. Baldwin had the worst vertical. He will probably return, hopefully not down the road.

I never saw Keels look tired or huffing and puffing. I just felt he could quicker and more explosive with a little less weight. Just like Moore reshaped himself since his soph. year which made his combine numbers stand out. Good for him!

Trevor said "I won't make a decision until the deadline when it's time to make a decision" today. he didn't mention the first round, but mentioned "if I am comfortable with the information I get." He also says he talks to Jon every day, according to Adam Rowe on twitter. Green is probably waiting on this as well. He did talk a lot about the NBA before adding "but I love Duke." Maybe Christmas will come early and we get Keels and Green. My guess is Keels stays in and we get Green.

Can we not go Villanova style, play small ball?

Roach
Keels
Green
Whitehead
Lively
Getting keels back would indeed be Villanova style. If we somehow ended up with Keels and Green (highly unlikely but the Baker transfer would make sense) than we could go small or big with Flip. Keels is a big dude, him at the 3 would work fine. I'm just expecting the "I love Duke but.." statement any day now. But Keels and Green we'd be preseason #1 or close to it. One of those guys and I'd be pretty happy.

No. Whitehead is only 6’6”. He’ll play sg in the league and sf is where he’ll play at Duke . Now everyone wants to leave four players at 6’6” or better coming off the bench . So Blake’s would be the only guard on the bench . Duke will get one or the other but keels and Green won’t both be at Duke . Also that line up is a defensive liability.

Blakes and Schutt would come off the bench in that scenario. Catchings, Mitchell Young and Flip the other 4. Catchings and Blakes(or Schutt, one of the two) probably don't play so you're right just one guard off the bench most likely. Of course we're never getting Trevor and AJ Green so this is pointless. Feel free to quote me if I'm wrong; I'll be too happy to care. I have a good feeling about Catchings, I think he can contribute. I watched some video, he's a strong player. He will probably get Bates Jones type minutes, possibly more if anyone gets injured or sick.

I think letting Catchings move to sf allows for more players to play their natural positions. You have young and Mitchell to back up the 4/5. Forgot about Schutts. I do think Baker left because Duke gets one of Green or Keels back .

Was Baker thinking Keels was gone and we wouldn't sign anyone? He must not read this board or DBR ha. Maybe he thought we wouldn't sign someone as good as Green. I wonder if AJ verbally committed on the stipulation that he's only coming if Keels stays in.

I actually think Baker was hoping on getting more minutes and with out signing a sg and Keels gone he could slide into either spot (sg/sf) . Now that’s just speculation on my part but he’ll land somewhere that he can play .

Trevor's workouts and measurables were not particularly impressive. Esp. the measurables. Signs which point to him returning. But I still think he stays in, goes early to mid second round. Kind of bummed about Joey leaving. Second year in a row we've lost a senior captain to the portal. Wish him well, but wish he'd stayed. I imagine Joey will go to a smaller school. But if he goes to a bigger school, he will probably be a 3 point specialist off the bench, and he will still need to hit shots.

Or he may just need to go to a school where he don’t have to be worried about being recruited over any more. To me Joey just needs minutes on the floor and not just in practice.
