Officially game day thread- ACC game 1! Duke vs Lville

Ugly win and still found way to cover thanks to a couple timely three's by Kon and Brown and James playing like animals.

I know Mal is a project but geez for someone 7'2 he disappears. Is it our players aren't looking for him? Or our system doesn't benefit his style?

Hopefully we have an easy game on Tuesday because that's a quick turn around.
You answered your own question. Duke playing five out doesn’t suit Mals size and not looking for him down low or on the lob . Kinda hard to guard down low when opposing teams don’t have a true center . You’re starting to see the same effect with Kansas and Hunter . Someone you think should be easily averaging 15 and ten isn’t .

Any chance Mal is a 2 year guy like Mark? Long year and all, but he's going to start sliding unless his play picks up. He has upside of course but he seems a step slow right now.

I am okay with Kon tonight. Yes, he missed a ton but hit two big shots from 3. But that's what I want from our "shooters." That's what I want from Evans. You in the game, you get an open look like that, let it go. HAVE to get your shooters attempts.
Agree with this it puts pressure on defense. We don't want bad shooters putting up shots but I want Kon, Proctor and Evans letting it go

The 2nd half was a combination of Duke playing a little better and Louisville coming down to earth. We had very solid games by Sion and Brown.

This isn’t meant as a knock on Cooper, because he’s our best player, but I thought we looked our best when he went to the bench with 4 fouls. It was as if the others focused a little better, and noticed we had 5 on offense.

It showed we can play critical moments of the game without him, and don’t have to play him 36+ minutes.

Right now, he's probably still taken high on potential. I do believe he will break out this year, though.

We would have to revamp our entire offense in order for Mal to even have a chance to break out.

That ain’t happening and the breakout ain’t happening,

He is a project who runs well straight ahead but can’t slide quickly and is very weak.

Not to mention his processing the play is not quick enough yet, on most occasions.

I like him, don’t think I don’t, but he is a long way away.

It's hard to say. We've had guys who improved rapidly (Lively, Williams). But we've had guys who, well; haven't. (Bolden, Jeter, Reeves is barely playing for Clemson) Obviously mal is a future pro but he looks like a project right now. He did not play in the second half. Still, lots of time, but Brown needs at least 25 minutes at the 5 right now. Not everyone improves at light speed like Lively.

There will be games that Mal will be more effective and the same with Evans. We need to start games working inside little more and our starts will be better.

First quarter of the season done. Went about as expected; I never really bought into the superteam hype as we had too many new pieces. Room for improvement for sure but a good start. Will the pieces come together? Right now I'd peg us as a 2 seed. We are a possibly elite team but we are beatable as well. Will be a fun season.

Duke got off to a rough start in Louisville, but they turned it on in the 2nd half and secured the win.

We got a “Let’s Go Duke!” chant going towards the last 5 minutes of the game and the Louisville fans did not appreciate it, they started “booooing” us. Duke Nation showed up at the KFC Yum Center.

We got a picture with Isaiah “Slim” Evans (Brandon Ingram 2.0) and we told him to keep shooting the 3 ball 👌🏽🏀

He nodded his head yes and said “Bet”

Watching the 10 minute highlights.
1. Want to know why teams hit 3's against us? They have room. You give a Div. 1 player 5 feet and they can hit it. Holding your hand up does not effect them. need to tighten that up.
2. Proctor being very aggressive with the ball, in a good way.
3. Mal looks a little lost out there; esp. on D.
4. I was watching Gillis. He denied his man the ball, then slid over, blocked a shot, and led to a Kon lay up. Kid is smart and solid.
5. Big play with Cooper getting the steal, then getting the 2nd foul on their big man.
6. Sion with some big boy plays. My goodness. That dunk down the lane.
7. My dad the coach would love Brown. Every play he makes is a positive. Creates havoc defensively. Gets guys out of rhythm.
8. Flagg taking over. He has guard skills.
9. Kon had a solid game after the early misses. Made some crafty passes.
10. I'm seeing a mean streak in Flagg I didn't see earlier. Very nice on some tough finishes.
We took their best shot and won by double digits. Good job team.

Please start a thread after games called “Chris stats and stuff” and post this. I would love it

I’d love to see some Brown/Maluach tandem action. Maluach can guard the lane, and the rest can be more aggressive clamping on the outside. If their men get by, Mal is there to protect the rim. And Brown on the perimeter is such a PITA for the other team, it has to disrupt their offensive scheme.
People have suggested it but it would kill our spacing. While Jon's encouraging Maliq to shoot the corner 3 and he hit a BIG one against KU...he's not a reliable threat or a ball handler to pull the defense out.

Bottom line is we couldn't get to the rim in any capacity with brown & maluach playing at the same time. We could try it, but i suspect the staff knows this, the foul trouble risks, and chooses to split our big guys' minutes that way.

We would probably get caught in a switch and have to foul

Right now, Mal is still learning the game and is still processing . He got one lob last night and I think another reason Jon pulls him so quick , there was a play where he got the rebound and should have went right back up with it especially having two smaller guards on him instead he kicked out to a missed three. Teams aren’t even really guarding Mal down low right now because they know he is looking for the rebound and kick out . Also him guarding at the high post causes for smaller guards to blow by him on a screen and it’s harder for him to recover to the basket . Jon needs to feed the post a little more .

1. Yes, too often (first half - much better in second) we were chasing shooters instead of guarding them.
2. You know, I felt like we had more turnovers watching the game than the stat-line reveals). I thought Proctor was being too aggressive and losing the ball. Obviously it did not happen as I thought it did during play.
3. Not a good matchup for him - he has been better. Kudos to John for recognizing this..
4. Looking forward to his growth.
5. Yes
6. Glad we did more of this in 2nd half. With a depleted 7 man rotation we needed to shove it down their throats.
and make them guard us on drives (IMO).
7. Favorite player right now.
8. Him sitting was good for us. Got the team playing more instead of waiting. That said he is great and as the team plays more togehter they will get into better sync. Feel like we are still testing lineups at this point.
9. I think we get too caught up in groaning when he misses in this slump after his hot start, but he makes so many other positive plays.
10. I hate to say he had some timidity in his start because he really didn't but you can see change in him as he adjusts even more to the college game.

I was there along with many other Duke fans. By the end of the game it was all Duke chants. I thought we did a good job of weathering the storm of three's early on and didn't panic. Our defense is elite, and should keep us in every game no matter how off we are from 3.

I thought the biggest play of the game was when Cooper went out with 4 fouls, Kon's man fell down and he hit a wide open 3, that got everything going, and then it was the Maliq Brown show. I can't say enough good things about Brown, but we was AWESOME again last night.

The slow starts need to stop though. Should Jon consider starting Brown over Mal?? I don't have the answers, but that was a great win as we now get 1 gimme game and then can rest up some.

Seemed like Louisville missing the same shots they hit in the first half was the key. Duke shot no better from 3 so they finally quit doing it. Might be the key in all the road games.

Would rather not see that as the strategy though, the “well they can’t make them all” game plan.
Duke has got to start shooting better to start games and not falling in love with bad three-point shots.

With that said, some recent Duke teams probably lose last night’s game.
