Official game day thread- Duke va Kansas

I disagree here. As @DukeDallas9192011015 said, we don't have a true point guard. Roach has been in. plenty of situations like our last couple losses and he's made shots to win us the game. He'd be our only guard who can actually break down a defense with his driving to the basket. Even if he misses, he'll draw a couple defenders and give the weak side an opportunity for a rebound/put back.
I think that Roach would have at least provided us a couple of timely 3's against Kansas and Kentucky. That would have definitely helped when we desperately needed a basket. I think that both Cooper and Kon will be fine, but it would be great to have a kick out or two where someone can hit a 3.

I like that a lot better than not even getting off a shot during the last two minutes.

Roach drove me nuts at times but he could penetrate and hit big shots.
Roach left because he wanted to be a pg . He didn’t want to be off ball. He spoke so highly about how he was able to get back to being a pg at Baylor. He’s basically off the ball at Baylor now . You have Proctor and Foster . If Roach truly wanted to stay at Duke he could have but chose to leave end of discussion no one forced him out he simply did not want to stay at Duke and play off the ball.

The problem with playing Proctor at PG is he is BY FAR our best off-the-ball shooter. I believe he is now over 60% on catch and shoot three's. I don't have the answer, but I feel it needs to be some combo of the 3. It's safe to say we don't have a true PG, but with 3 solid guards combined with Flagg and Kon, turnovers and getting into an offense shouldn't be the problem IMO.
Proctor and Foster are both combo guards and can play both positions . I think the entire reason for playing foster now is to build up his confidence on his repaired ankle

Maybe you are right. However, if we are playing guys to "build up their confidence" against Kentucky and Kansas than I completely disagree with that philosophy. How come Evans isn't getting his confidence built up?

You play to win the game at all costs, these games are very important for seeding, especially with the lack of good teams in the ACC. Play to win, you can experiment with lineups and confidence building against Wofford and Seattle.

Some people on the other board suggesting we are going to run the table. Negativity can be bad but I swear sunshine pumping is no better. Neither is objective. I just go by what I see.
I've been known to pump sunshine occasionally, but I think it is even irrational to envision this group finishing 29-2. I think we will be a 24-7 to 25-6 team going into the ACC tourney.

Because Evan’s isn’t a true pg . Foster originally was until his senior year he had to play the sg. They are building his confidence to let him believe his ankle will hold up . Hoping it doesn’t end with him breaking his confidence while playing his best ball missing his last nine games of freshman year with an ankle injury . Evan’s isn’t going to start and is either coming in for Kon or Proctor to get his minutes period .

Then this bored is guilty in the same. A lot had Duke at the final four with not seeing a game and a one seed now five games in that’s completely changed by the same posters . This team was never going undefeated and this early in the season is the best reality check that you can both be beat and let yourself get beat .
Don’t believe Kansas is the out right number one team even with Hunter on the court. They are good but aren’t going undefeated either .

I think Auburn is going to be a problem but at least Duke is playing at home.
Each game is a learning experience for March . You now have two games in which you can look at Flag and show him how he’s made the same mistake by spinning. You now have a game to where you tell Kon to shoot and get the foul and not attempt to pass when there is no outlet . It’s all about learning now . It’s five games in and we are literally breaking down a team that has never played together. God forbid if there was an entire season a head of them to play . Y’all act like the NCAA tourney starts Friday after thanksgiving. Isn’t it in March ?

Ima just keep it 100. Cooper …I’ve seen better at Duke . To be this godly generational type player, I’ve yet to see it. I see flashes of a “great” player, but nothing generational. The dude has now choked twice in the clutch , and in my opinion the WHOlLE reason we were even in that spot from his poor play. I also blame John, the team wasn’t prepared for how they played us, and looked lost. Based off talent alone, and Kansas missing open shots, missed dunks , etc, we still almost squeaked out a W. So much to be desired, but irs early. We will be fine.

As general comments, I agree with you Shey. But what’s different at Duke is due to the caliber of freshmen we get, we seem to base the team around that star. We wind up being very predictable. Which ends up being our downfall. How many teams over the last 7-8 seasons have improved from November to March? None, maybe one (the Banchero team) that had the elite freshmen.

I was praising this team after game two. I love the talent. But Jon has to be better. And anyone that says he will be is merely speculating.

I think the following teams improved from November to March in the most recent seasons:

19-20: Tre Jones and Carey led team (Covid Cancellation)
21-22: Banchero led team
22-23: Jon’s 1st Season as Head Coach once he moved Proctor to Point Guard and Roach to Shooting Guard

Chris, I’m aware Duke lost to Tennessee in 2023, but Duke also went undefeated that season at home. The team won an ACC Championship, swept the holes (many on this board were afraid of) and many feel were under seeded going into the tournament. The rotation was solid and roles were defined. All the guys got going after a slow start to the season. Also, didn’t help having Mitchell out against Tennessee. Duke went on a 10+ so winning streak in February I believe.

A season ending loss to Tennessee doesn’t take away from Duke improving in Scheyer’s first season.

I guess I wasn’t clear enough. Tre was a sophomore on the 19-20 team though. I was referring to the teams that had really hyped up freshmen. Tatum, then Bagley, and then Zion/RJ. I did mention the Banchero led team as being the exception.
Cooper has at least the same hype as those guys.

As far as potential, we could do at least what the Banchero team did. But I do think Jon has to be sharper.

Agree 100% here. That Tre/carey team was playing amazing ball I think that was a final four team

Mac, you did mention the Banchero team. I just read your 1st post as Duke teams in the last 7-8 years.

I will say once Coach K decided to play through Tatum, the 16-17 team started clicking but unfortunately ran into a very physical and buzzsaw South Carolina Team. I know we’ve agreed that team had a lot of alphas, but it seemed like the 1st game against Unc that season is when Coach K had figured out the right rotation starting:

Jackson
Jones
Kennard
Tatum
Jefferson

Bringing

Allen
Giles
Bolden

Off the bench

Pisgah,

I believe that Duke team along with about 15 other teams could have cut the nets down that season. They were playing so well before the post season was cancelled. Had solid veteran point guard play, outside shooting, slashers, and a big man who could score in the block.

Kansas (who Duke had beaten earlier in the season) and Dayton (led by Obi Toppin) were some of the stronger teams that season.

Proctor and Foster are not your issues...neither is James. What can Cooper, Kon, Ma, Brown, Gillis and and others give you???

Old age and treachery will always beat youth and exuberance - translates to experience and knowledge will beat youth and talent...unfortunately we are the latter,....every year
And @denverexpat you nailed it. You cant beat veteran leadership and team chemistry. For instance, despite the joy derived from their losses in Maui, the Cheaters look better than us right now(to me). Pains me much to admit.

Odd that we are favored. But it would be a huge win.

Agree on Maluach needing to stay out of foul trouble. He will have his hands full guarding arguably the best offensive big man in the country. And overall team defense. Which has been very good so far. I expect that will be there.

But I think the bigger challenge is on offense. We have to reduce the bad drives by Kon, not take dribble and shoot 3s, and actually make our open catch and shoot 3s. It would be nice to see Jon use some plays to get Kon some open 3s instead of the one on one offense we’ve been running.

And, as always, use the bench more. Especially in the first half. Get some bench players in the game. Get more rest to the starters.

Is there any status on Ngongba? Would be good to see him even get 3-5 minutes to help spell Maluach.
Youngman nice post. I also wondered about Patrick (in addition to Evans). Disappointed in Malauch. ONE rebound in 20+ minutes for a 7 footer???

I still have faith that Jon is the right guy. Bad college coaches are folks like Kevin Stallings
Despite his poor and abbreviated tenure at Pitt, Kevin Stallings took Vanderbilt to seven NCAA tournament and two Sweet 16 appearances, Stallings doesn't remotely qualify as a "bad" college coach. And quite frankly Jon hasn't shown anything thus far to suggest he could produce better results at a program with the stature and resources of a Vanderbilt.

That is why I hate the generational tag. You're practically setting the kid up to fail.
How has he really failed ? I mean he does it all and yes he’s headed to the league next year but the kid is generational. Now I hope everyone sees why I wanted him at SF . Bigger power forwards with experience are always going to be trouble for a 17 year old Flag especially when they have an experienced center. Auburn is going to do the same as Kansas against Flag .
